It’s about a character that has always had a certain image. As much as the comic buffs want to talk about storyline and character relationships, it’s the character’s image that is far, far more important than anything else. And when something causes a deviation from that image, you can bet it’s not going to be received well. See DmC.
So no. It’s nothing to do with race or gender or whatever you want to turn this into. It’s about image and icon. Same goes for Thor. No matter how hard they’re trying to convince me, I’m not seeing Thor when I look at the new Thor. I’m seeing a woman wearing a Thor costume.

captain america is a fucking symbol and always has been. same with batman…these arent character defined by race but defined by what they stand for.
Nice idealism, shame it’s just not based in reality at all. For most people, their understanding of the character ends at what they look like. And Captain America has always been white. Maybe not in the comics, but in popular perception.
