Martial arts and stereotypes in Street Fighter

Dudley is based on Eubank?

I saw him come out of his hotel (that he LIVES in!) and go into Tesco Express on a micro scooter the other day. He’s definately lacking in dignity.

Ummm…Kenya has beaches too.
So, Kenyans can’t have straight hair or blue eyes? Her father has a PhD from a French university which could make her mother European or at least have some European ancestry. Straight hair and blues eyes doesn’t make you think Brazilian now, does it? If so, take a look at Sean. Oh, and you forgot to mention that she’s wearing Kenyan jewelery.

It’s not hard to believe that she’s Kenyan.

Actually, I didn’t know about Capoeira having African roots. Thanks for that bit of info, Resonate.

But take a look at Shorinji Kenpo. It’s roots lie in Shaolin Kung Fu, but it looks so different from Shaolin Kung Fu it might as well be a different art form. Thus, I don’t know how close Capoeira would be to its African roots, unless someone has video of traditional African martial arts in action. I’ve never seen African martial arts so I would appreciate any info people might have on it.

And yeah, Tokusatsu was never a martial art. I did make a note of that. I just included it because I like it.

Thanks bobbypigo for the karate links too.

Isn’t it way more reasonable to take those elements (white hair and blue eyes) as artistic license. I mean, way, way, way more reasonable.

In other words, they couldn’t be bothered to do the research on African martial arts (or, for that matter, contemporary Kenyan culture) or even come up with a proper Kenyan name. Eh.

Now, Elena is my secondary in the Three series, and in general, I like her. I certainly applaud the attempts at ethnic diversity you speak of, but when the result is a tan, white-haired amazon who, as you point out, may be part European but wields the obligatory (if toned down) shamanistic powers… I feel that they might as well have named her “Tempest” or “Gale”, given her a “summon thunderstorm” Super Art, listed her as from “parts unknown” and gotten it over with.

Hell, it worked for Necro and Oro…

By no means am I saying that Capcom correctly modeled her after Kenyans, I’m just saying it’s not that far fetched for her to be a Kenyan instead of a Brazilian.

no,no.
i’m not saying that its not possible that she’s kenyan…

i’m just saying that most probably the capcom staff artists created her to originally come from brazil…drew her accordingly…then changed their minds at a later point because their bosses felt two characters from brazil was enough, and three were too much for one location.

Steve and Vanessa can go lick somebody’s coochie

Nah. I’m pretty sure that she was always Kenyan or, at least, African. Why would you think that? That makes no sense when they have 4 people from China in SF4.

Just proving a point.

I thought of Steve way before I posted

Zangief would be pro with a moonsault.

Wolf Hawkfield from VF seems to be giving more of an homage to some more recent professional wrestling moves. I’ve noticed they’ve given him some signature moves that some well known wrestlers use such as the Rock Bottom, Pedigree, and the Stone Cold Stunner.

I’m not a huge wrestling buff, so I don’t know if those were based on other moves and tweaked somewhat to be more of a signature stlye move, but the way in which he performs them is highly reminiscent of the way the wrestler who uses each one pulls them off. For example, on the stunner, before you can even do it you have to hit them with a kick to the gut, just like Steve Austin/DDP.

Exaggerations and game mechanics aside, exactly how accurate are the fighting styles presented by
characters from fighting games? I’ve always wanted to know what real-world styles the KoF &
Street Fighter characters used.

Some are obvious (Sagat - Tae Kwon do, Balrog & Dudley - Boxing, Zangief - Wrestling) but what
about guys like M. Bison? Guile? Terry Bogard?

Im surprised you dont know those, since they are even more obvious
M.Bison - Praying mantis
Guile - Sumo
Terry Bogard - Ninjutsu

Wow you asshole gj lying to him

guile = kendo
terry = capoeira

at least you got bison right, scrublord

Bison uses a militarized style of muay thai called ledrit. along with that, he’s enhanced his attacks with ki

Guile I have no idea. I think he made that shit up on the fly one day

Guile was taught by Charlie who made that shit up one day.
