So sad that my greatest, saltiest victory didn’t make stream. Marvel is the best game of all time, everybody.
EX thunderbolt beats yoga fire on reaction. DAN IM CALLIN YOU OUT
(srsly though if you’re down for an extended session on Monday or whenever we have spare time, I really genuinely want to learn the Dhalsim matchup, and not just to maybe win a match against you ever but to actually learn how to play this game)
Got my Gamertag fixed after 4 years helll yeah!
Several people, apparently.
While I want this to take off, I seriously doubt it will. But I hope they can do well with it.
It feels like it’s something they want to do and think will be cool, rather than anything with a long term business strategy. I wish it the best, but… I dunno. I don’t see it lasting for any amount of time.
Also, I’ve basically dropped SF4, but if you really want the Sim matchup experience we can hammer it out sometime.
I think the problem is that people think it’s amazing, but LGS has more arcade machines, and very few people get excited over those or even play them. Likewise, the movie theatres. Also, the cost of running arcade machines is pretty high, in terms of how much electricity they consume, and they’ll need to have a variety in order to bring people in, and enough space to put them all (or storage for ones they aren’t using).
And sad to say, but Halifax is a pretty apathetic city, and I can’t see people giving it the support it needs to take off.
Eh, I just don’t see it happening at all. I’d love to support it, but there’s really very few arcade games I’d be willing to sink quarters into. I might show up once or twice and throw 5$ at 'em, but that’s probably it. /apathy
Halifax is apathetic? Would an apathetic man from an apathetic city use this many exclamation marks!!!
!
Park Lane just got rid of all of their actual arcade games and replaced them with Terminator: Salvation: The Worst Possible Lightgun Game, an extra pinball machine from like 1973, and fake basketball. They used to have a pretty decent thing going down there. Suck city.
If this guy beefs up the collection and has the space to handle all of the real classics I can see it subsisting. As is… it doesn’t even really hold a candle to what Adam has (X-Men > Simpsons, Alpha 3 and MVC2 > MKII, Spiderman: The Arcade Game > literally everything else in the entire world)
Park Lane use to have a SFIII machine, it was broken, but they use to have it. If they have a basketball machine I’m going down there to work on my hoop skills, because I’m really white. I feel like this arcade will be a fun little thing, nothing to the same size as the few big name arcades down in the States, but something to remind you of the good ol’ times when you walk in, nothing more.
Man I would be so into Marvel right now if I had any friggin time to do things apart from sleeping and working. Spencer is fun to try and make work! Doom seems pretty damn one-note but it’s a really loud one at least.
Also, thoughts on a new SF4 character? I’m relearning Dudley since Honda practice has eliminated a lot of my bad habits and shown me the value of being frame-positive (also because I absolutely cannot lose to ooPo now). I agree with thirtyfour now that Duds is underappreciated… everything he does is fast, safe, and hits so hard. He does lack some tools, and has a couple of problem matchups that Honda can cover but they both tend to lose to the same characters (Chun, Sim, grapplers). I guess I’m looking for a different style of character to cover me off for tournaments. Should I actually learn to play a shoto?
Just learn one character really well. No one in the maritimes is at a level where they can effectively use a sub in a tourney.
Trust me, I only intend to sub against a character who is completely free to one or the other. I need to be ABLE to play more characters, I think, before I can get really good with one. Trust that I am learning the right way for me, because I don’t play fighting games right enough yet to get amazing with one character to the exclusivity of others. I’d rather use Honda vs. Cammy and Balrog than Dudley, and I’d rather use Dudley against anybody with a fireball; that’s all I’m talkin! Not to slag your advice but I feel like both of these guys operate simply (Dudley to rush down with frame advantage, oki and hit-confirms, Honda to play slowly and methodically and counter everything) but also unlike most other characters in the game, and I want to broaden my range of play experience to become a better player. I should be able to do Ryu combos now, so maybe I can play Ryu, is basically my line of thought. I still suck at Street Fighter and I want to stop.
Learning a bit about other characters and what their capabilities are will help you with match-ups, that’s for sure.
However, I think I would side with Dan on this one. Knowing and being able to play one character really well will probably take you farther than understanding a bunch of characters at a basic level. If you have bad match-ups against certain characters, there’s probably people in the scene who you can ask to play with you to get a better understanding of them.
Anyway, that’s just my two cents, I don’t even play this game.
Oh I absolutely agree that both of you are coming from the right place. I still think I need a lot of work on fundamentals - I would like to learn more about crossups, FADCs, and projectile spacing which is why I’m looking at a shoto. I can only speak personally but I try to analyze how I learn while I do it, and switching to Honda - even though I only played like half or a third as often as I did when I was still maining Dudley - made me exponentially better at the game. SO much better. Granted the tournaments in 2012 were so dense (I only ever took Dudley to 3 tournaments, whereas with Honda I went to five, I think) that that may have had an effect. I’m going to try to bring Dudley back up to speed first (he is very, very good for practicing hit confirms) and then pick a shoto to learn. Maybe Dan. Anyway like I say it’s less about finding a sub and more about actually learning the game (it’s only been eighteen months so I figure it’s about time)
I admire their courage, I’ll stick with collecting and restoring cab
thats what they are doing isn’t it?
Well, not really, they’re trying to make the arcade a business venture. If they’re doing any collecting/repairing, then it’s for their own use as a business, as far as I can tell.
From what I’ve heard though, they only have two working machines in the back of a convenience store so far.
They said on FB they’re planning to have a “real grand opening” in November with 5 cabs, which I think will be The Simpsons, Terminator 2, and MK 2 on top of the MSHvSF and Area 51 they already have. They’re in a cozy little nook behind a convenience store right now, but it sounds a bit like the guy has plans to expand it and maybe reduce the convenience store aspect down to a snacky core (especially since there is another convenience store right across the street). I still don’t think even the most awesome retro arcade can be profitable (although running a quarter a credit is definitely the right idea) but it’s literally down the street from me so I’ll probably be spending more money there than I should. I got to beat Spider-Man at Adam’s store a couple years ago though, so my number-one arcade achievement is already completed.
