Makoto Video Thread/Match Critiques

Heya Scarz!

Here’s the TL;DR:
-Good work in sagat match, risky with HCs, but not bad.
-Punishes! Ryu showed he loved random SRKs and tatsu. Try sweeping whiffed tatsus (lp reset got you shoryued both times you did it) and stop sweeping whiffed SRKs. Normal->hayate for lp SRK and fukiage combo blocked HP SRKs
-Are you predicting or reacting? Explain that cr. mk at 1:40 if you would.
-MP oroshi can be good too! You can combo after it with cr. lk into ex hayate for a corner combo!
-Nice comeback, don’t rely on those though!

[details=Spoiler]The sagat match, it was pretty clear that he didn’t know what to do once you got in. You definitely lucked out on that string of hayate cancels that lead to the stun. Nice patience in that match starz! No random ex hayates or u2s from you. Good timing in walking forward and blocking. Nice corner pressure. I don’t agree with how risky you went with those hayate cancels, but it worked out for you, so hey!

The ryu match…first off, damn this guy has a lotta games under his belt! Guess that’s more normal for console users to see, but anyways. This ryu established a few things early on that you didn’t catch right away. First, the first time you knocked him down (I woulda went for a hayate combo there instead of sweep, but knockdowns are good so hey) he went for HP shoryu (which he can’t FADC in 2012 if I remember right). That there should put you in bait mode. He also showed that he’s willing to use raw HK tatsu to get outta the corner. You started jabbing them eventually, but every time you did he just SRKed ya. I prefer to go with sweep to punish those myself, gotta go for those knockdowns!

When round 2 hit, you went into bait mode. After you backdashed that shoryu, you could have done cr. mp into ex hayate for corner push. Then he did another SRK at about 1:41 and you punished with cr. mk. I’m starting to think that maybe you’re not reacting with these but predicting. Dunno what you were looking for with that cr. mk, maybe anticipating a jump in or something, but I dunno if it woulda hit since you did it so early. If you’d waited for the SRK, you woulda had a cr. mp -> hayate punish. Then he charges a full lvl 3 FA…which I’m pretty sure you were out of range of. At this point, I can tell the guy is cracking a bit. You reacted to the FA with what I guess was a missed HK IAT (yeah it sucks when you miss it). N. jmp HK would have worked as a punish. Raw ex. hayate even woulda worked (since you were so close, I don’t think he coulda reacted). I woulda went for a block string, karakusa set up, or throw after the missed HK IAT, since yeah, he’s mashing at this point.

Then he…fadcs a cr. mk at 1:50? Looks like he meant to FADC a hadou, but missed it, so hey, whatever. Then you start doing all those HP oroshis on his wake-up…oh man you got lucky there. Again, start punishing whiffed SRKs better than sweep. You also did no follow up after MK IAT at 2:02 or so, woulda killed him for sure. Still, good corner pressure, although you coulda did a few things a bit better.

As for the final round, well you can tell he was scared. He was whiffing normals full screen…not throwing hadous, despite the fact that you weren’t at a range to punish him for it. Those two whiffed tatsus definitely coulda turned the round in your favor. If you’d swept him, you coulda went for mix ups on his wake up, or bait him. As for your comeback, it was glorious. I love seeing that, but you’re again you got lucky there. He didn’t start mashing until after you choked him  [/details]

Im at the 40 minute mark on the shiro gamerbee match…please somebody tell me that shiro comes back or atleast maks it even cause right now gamerbee must feel that makoto is free…: (

Nah man, he doesn’t. It’s cool though, he definitely doesn’t go down without a fight!

Spoiler

Wanna say the final score was 14-4 gamerbee or something like that. Gamerbee went through all the games at the end to make sure when someone asked him the score on the stream, though that prolly isn’t in the youtube version.

Umehara vs Haitani

Umehara does NOT care does he? Those hp srks are coming out whether you like it or not.

I don’t get the Shiro craze. Haitani is my favorite Makoto, bar none. I get all his decisions, his intentions, and like watching him. Shiro just goes nuts full screen and backs himself into a corner with his fullscreen neutral jumps, backdashes, and going crazy with the buttons. I can’t figure out his goals with the character/match-ups, but I suppose that’s one of his strengths.

The Tokido matches.

Hm, well I like Shiro because he’s got a civilized air about him. That, and he streams his matches…Haitani is always playing in that “no recording allowed” arcade isn’t he? Playstyle-wise I definitely agree with you though Robot, Haitani makes more sense, but some people like to watch players who are a bit more random…exhibit A: Jyobin!

to be honest i find shiro kinda boring to watch. haitani, v-ryu… full of excitement everytime i watch.

Haitani and v-ryu definitely know more about makoto than Shiro does I think. Part of that is because Shiro hasn’t been playing Makoto as long. They use hayate cancels a lot more as well, which is always fun for me to watch. And v-ryu does style a lot when he can, I still remember that FT5 vs that dudley where he did like 4 jabs into u1 when dudley got stunned. It did like no damage, but he did it just to break his opponent’s spirit and show off.

Although it isn’t as impressive, I can’t deny I smile everytime Shiro lands hayate->super->u1 in a match

feast your eyes on midwest-best makky~!

Aw man, I missed the tokido matches before it got took down : (

The above gilty match…made up for it though : )

I prefer Shiro style personnaly, his footsies are stronger than Haitani ones, less spectacular, but safer and in a way more technical

i guess i see more of my reckless self in haitani lol.

I like both Makotos, but Haitani I think takes the cake as my more favoured Mak…could be biased since I had several games with the guy when he was in Aus. Showed me good Makoto times.

Thanks for the feedback :)…

About the c.mk at 1:40 vs Ryu, I was expecting him to use a hp shoryuken so he would go higher, and I was going to do c.mk then a crossunder, but at that time my reactions were wayy to slow to realise it was a lp shoryuken lol. Also I never thought about using lp fukiage to punish hp SRK, so thanks for that :D.

Topanga League Round 1 : Haitani - Daigo

Haitani - Tokido

Holy shit wow OMFG I"m like WTFBBQ at these matches, man Haitani is amazing! He’s so fast! Man he almost had that Daigo one though but definitely showing off some potential for 2012 Makoto there. I’m loving the s.LK whiffs after teched knockdowns:

-HK Tsurugi, Dash, s.HK and
–s.LP
–Throw
–IAT
–s.LK Karakarakusa
–EX Oroshi

What a fucking set of Mixups. wow. and then i gotta love the same setups, just off of EX Oroshi>dash, jump. Shit was awesome.

note: Did anyone else see the “Download Complete” troll icon after the tokido match #2? Just checking. Also, just playing. Tokido would rip me a new one for months lol.

Good Goddam Games. If anyone wants to learn how to play Makoto, especially against these two (which you will see very, very, VERY often) study these two films. This is some advanced shit guys…

Thanks for sharing JMz18!!! I will study these everyday. EVERY DAY! lol

Oh another thing I wanted to point out about Haitani’s play is that he put a limit on what he did post Hayate and whenever his opponent did a move that when blocked left him at advantage. For instance. Tokido used a lot of s.HK (of course) and at first Haitani was punishing with f.LP. Of course nothing combos after but he would do things like f.LP>c.LK, cLP etcetc to try and get a combo. Only once did Tokido mash DP and hit Haitani and he didn’t do it EVER AGAIN. Not once. He just blocked, and although Tokido never did DP again, Haitani didn’t try to hit him after s.HK. There is MUCH more to be learned here than combos and setups, and we should keep that in mind. Its a little about what he does and A LOT about what he does not do. We should look for more points like this… seeing where he learned and teach it to ourselves to up our game.

I know most of us don’t have a plan mid game to switch little things up. Big things, yeah (stop jumping, stop focusing, stop dashing, etc) but we should have a plan for what the opponent is doing to. A plan B, plan C, etc etc. Too often are we stiking to the same plan and when we lose sometimes we get angry. What we need is another route. Try to figure out what spots we can change… little things so our opponent wot notice, that will allow us to overcome our opponents adaptation.

OH and please please make sure plan B is safer than plan A lol.

(I posted this already and it vanished so here i go again)
I wanted to post because it was a proud moment. I beat this dude once, then he went to his main (Guy) then I beat him again and he left. This was a proud moment because, even though my execution is in the toilet from lack of practice in training room, I was able to beat him with fundamentals and DDR- Distancing, Defense, and Reads
