Makoto Strategy and Match-ups

if done right (like alioune does), canon strike beats OS crMK techthrow (and any other OS techthrow), sadly :frowning:

I know, it’s terrible. There’s a specific CS height that both naturally combos on hit and is high enough to beat out OS crouch techs. Very annoying.

That video was eye-opening. Just added Cammy to my list of characters to be scared of:

Fei
Cammy
Rufus
T.Hawk

ugh

I’m not scared of Fei. Yeah, he beats her pound for pound as a character, but he has to play her game, a solid ground game, and Makoto’s counter pokes beat his. If Makoto plays defense, it’s hard for Fei to get started unless he’s Mago and punishes every whiffed s.HK and c.MP with three Rekkas.

Cammy, Rufus, die.

T. Hawk is annoying because the only way to get any safe offense in is a max range HK Tsurugi, or just drop all your strings and combos on him and pray he was churning butter while you Tsurugi him … and get reversal Ultra’d when it turns out he was blocking. It’s like the opposite of Cammy attacking Makoto, where when Makoto attacks Hawk, she ALWAYS has to respect the Mexican Typhoon. The only thing I’ve recently started doing with Makoto vs. grapplers that has really turned it around for me is doing what Momochi does … play defense until they get scared and stop pressing buttons; that’s when you dash up and throw them, or dash up and sweep. Those types of guerrilla tactics are vital when you make them think you’re going to sit back all day.

Wow, I must be playing the Fei matchup blatantly wrong. S.hk I use, but post first rekka it gets ugly fast. Seems like after that blocked rekka every option gets stuffed (c.lk os lp hayate, c.mp, IAT) Is that where I should throw out s.hk? Eh, I will do some lab time tonight and see. I just find myself cornered in about 8 seconds and delayed rekka’ed to death.

Re: T.hawk, yeah, I totally get that strategy- Gief is my main so I just remember every Mak I have faced and try to emulate what works. solid zoning and AA’ing everything, even in trade is my whole focus. Still get scooped lol.

Use st.hk to keep him from getting that first blocked rekka. st.mp OS MP/EX Hayate also works, but you’ve got less range to work with.

Unless the Rekka is spaced well, you can punish it with c.LK on block. You definitely have time after a blocked LP Rekka to IA Tsurugi, or s.MP, or FA1/2, all before he can possibly get his c.LP/c.LK off, assuming he stays at one blocked Rekka. If he goes to 2 or 3 blocked Rekkas, you can just mash U1 and free punish. A lot of the mind game with Rekkas is it’s technically a frame trap of sorts if they go from one blocked Rekka slightly delayed to the second, but it’s risky - you’ll see high level Feis do a lot of that simply because it’s supposed to be punishable and it’s unexpected. FA1 against him during his Rekka games works well, just backdash and be ready to dash forward and c.HP.

Yeah, Boom Cube’s right. s.HK stops Fei’s horizontal attacks, and OS Hayate s.MP, s.MK, and c.MP are good, though s.MP is definitely the best to not get whiff punished. s.MK beats the chicken wing for free, c.MK and s.MK own him in the air. His best tool to get in aside from whiff punishing is definitely that FA, so watch out for that, and be ready to s.MK xx LP Hayate or empty jump throw him.

I’m not saying Makoto beats Fei. Far from it. Probably like a 6-4 match-up for Fei Long. But it’s not a clear victory for him if you catch on to any habits, because Fei’s stuff can be countered with her tools almost always.

For fei long i do ex oroshi back dash safe jump OS fukiage. blocks dp and beats all chicken wings. Back dash is another story so mix it up. Im not 100% with safe jump os yet.

robot u have any vids of u playing. u seem like u know a lot.

No videos. I’ve just spent many a night pondering her tools, it’s actually rather sad how I have to think so much and look up OSs and match-up info and hit the training lab, while a charge character is built so damn solid that all his tools are obvious and they don’t really have to think, they can just press buttons all day.

I don’t really play good enough opponents often enough to get good videos if I wanted to. Most of my opponents can’t be trained to stop hitting buttons, so many of my matches are me just landing s.HP xx HP Hayate off a Tsurugi or hit-confirming with s.MP into MP Hayate or getting a counter poke c.MP OS MP Hayate, then frame trapping with s.MP xx EX Oroshi (or block if they like to mash), go into safe jump, punish reversal, stun them, kill them with FA3, IA MK Tsurugi, LP Fukiage, EX Tsurugi. That’s the flow of most matches where I haven’t downloaded them or they’re good. Pretty boring, actually, because I LOVE LOVE LOVE HC mix-ups and dashing up and throwing people.

It’s why, for me, not only is my Makoto not as effective at fighting scrubs, but also why she’s just plain not fun against them. You pretty much have to let them kill themselves considering her risk vs. reward, and inability to have a thinking, adapting opponent to get caught up in the mind-games. Nope, basic tricks and hope you don’t get hit by random headbutts into Ultra or shit like that … which I do :frowning:

fei can punish any hayate and EX oroshi with crLP -> rekka.
That’s sad (his elbow hits further than his sprite…).

and we … cannot punish any rekka.

This matchup is VERY difficult :frowning:

Thanks a ton for all the info guys, Robot Makoto’s writeup will help a lot as well. This is one of many nightmare matchups for a newish Makoto.

Thank god they buffed Fei in AE :wtf:

Look on the bright side, EX Hayate, LP Fukiage works on him. Then again, Fei’s s.MP xx CW + followup works on Makoto, which is NASTY.

Aside from doing random-ish HK Tsurugis around slide range, how do you guys approach the spacing in the Rose match-up? Max range slide, c.MP xx MK Soul Spiral is so annoying; Makoto pretty much can’t do anything but backdash or mash EX Oroshi. Should I just block the c.MP and try to EX Oroshi on reaction to the SS?

basically 2HP the slide, and 6mp to get close.

I don’t rely on EX oroshi to punish 2mp xx SS, it’s a little too risky

That’s a good idea, thanks. Usually Roses are pretty consistent with when they slide and such, so it’s not a matter of when to punish it, it’s with what.

I LOOOOVE fighting an Ibuki who does slide into Ultra 1 or command grab. Almost as fun as Kens who do LP SRK, HP SRK, or Dudley doing EX MGB, Ultra 2.

Worst part is if I message the guy telling him not to do that, I’M the scrub because I got hit by it and ā€œI mad.ā€

Okay i really need some matchup info on gen.

There is literally none, lol.

Gen is a nightmare in the right hands, there’s really nothing you can do against his frame trapping & Oga game, keep your distance & poke him to death

So what would be my go-to anti-air here? Because Fukiage didn’t work at all with his weird crossup walldive shenanigans.

Would it be j. Fierce like with Claw?

Also, distancing yourself from Guile is a big mistake right? Lol.
I think I may have just lost a match because of it. I’ll record it and post it in the match thread later :c
I still need help with him. I never react fast enough to focus his double sweep’s second hit.
