It might be a lack of me playing great blankas even with one (lapchi) in my city. Can it be said that this match up is heavily in makotos favor? I’ve had very little trouble against blankas. On the other hand I think hakan has become a big(ger) problem for makoto.
Got whipped up by gen last night. While it was obvious that I don’t know the match up, my question is, should I even learn it? I face maybe one gen every other month. Now gouken on the other hand…gonna need some help with that one…
Ps above- I DO have problems with some blankas. Electric mashers I can handle but the guys who have their distances down (blanka has some long distance strikes) becomes a toss up. And aggressive, execution tight blankas beat me for free
That last one I can understand. Just gotta weather the storm until ya find an opening the ranged game is easy tho. There’s no point in makoto contending with him there unless your absolutely sure her crouching mp will stop him in his tracks. He’s not the type of character to chip you out from a disntance so just be patient at that range. And yes makoto destroys mashy blankas
I would say yes to learning the gen matchup. I would say its pretty even in that match UNLESS one of the players doesn’t know it. Then it’s heavily in gen or makotos favor. Learn your personal and characters demons and you’ll be a better player over all. The biggest thing I’ve learned playing gouken is never try to punch your way out of the corner just block. Don’t jump at him unless it’s empty. Don’t meet him in the air either. Once he’s knocked down tho he is pretty free.
so where is the general start in any of these character breakdowns…it just links me to the ae guide and the video of mak vs gief she lost for the same reasons i did. anyone win vs him or guile? any videos?
Zangief is easy because of Makoto’s buffer pokes (trust me, it’s annoying as fuck to deal with as Gief), unless he gets a decent life lead, in which case it’s like an 8-2 match-up for Zangief. Guile, slightly more complicated, but ultimately doable because he has to guess because of HK Tsurugi wrecking a lot of his boom -> AA game plan, for multiple reasons, which opens up other methods of entry if he starts targeting Tsurugi with different AAs or FA fishing.
ok one more question… after a hayate vs gief i always get 360 grabbed…anyway around that? same with t.hawk.
Edit: I get grabbed even when it hits so should i just not use it?
On block, every Hayate including EX can be reversal SPD’d by those two grapplers. FADC out of the way if you mess up your hit-confirm.
On hit, yeah, there’s nothing good you can do on the ground that will beat SPD. That isn’t to say you’re getting punished, it’s just except for a f+LP, Makoto’s moves are too slow to beat out SPD at only +2 frame advantage. If you think it’s coming, instant air Tsurugi (risky if they block), neutral jump (risky if your opponent is skilled at AAing), neutral jump HK Tsurugi to beat out AA Lariat, or jump back into j.HP -> st.HP xx whatever if he does EX GH or just plain land -> EX Hayate if he whiffed an SPD.
So I been playing a good Juri on PSN lately (Top 500 ranked).
I thought the match was tougher than I expected, so this could be down to the ability of the player as much as anything. I went snooping on the Juri forums and they reckon that Makoto is fairly free for Juri :
"*Makoto seems pretty free in this matchup. Zone her with fireballs and AA with c.mp/c.fp and call it a day. You can bully her easily up close with c.mp and c.mk. *
- Its all about controlling the momentum in this matchup. Since you start away from Makoto, you’re already in the lead there. Quickest way she has to get to you is EX Hayate. If she has momentum on you and is pressuring, stay calm, block her shit, and avoid karakusa. *
- Her EX Overhead chop is Invincible so be careful when you’re right next to her. EX Karakusa will grab through one hit, but if you’re physically out of range of a grab then she just absorbs the hit and sits there in recovery…ie. max range c.mk. Makoto has some particularily nasty Meaty setups, and Juri has no great reversals on wakeup so try to avoid getting knocked down. *
- Avoiding Makoto’s mindgames and keeping her at bay with pokes and fireballs seems to just hand you the match.*"
Has anyone else had major probs with the match? I normally suffer from getting knacked by EX Senpusha, and the general Juri Fireball game.
Also, (Off-topic)
I been playing the Silent Hill 2 HD collection and the Nurses in the hospital always manage to get a first hit on me, which decreases my health. The range on their gangly arms are longer than my wooden-plank-with-a-nail-in-it. Should I be using firearms for this match-up?
Lol the guy that wrote that obviously hasnt had any experience against a decent makoto the thing about what he wrote down is that it’s the general strat for any zoner against makoto. Granted I feel that her cr.mk is really strong against makoto but other than that juri has no mixup and she can’t run all day lol. Are you using U2 for the match up? It is tempting cause of all those fire balls but DON’T. All she has to do is keep an hk fb stocked and that’s the end of that. With a bit of practice her dive kick and pin wheel are useless too. Once she can’t pinwheel on wake up (of she does) and u start stuffing it they’ll be hesitant if they’re smart allowing karakusa. In the end I think makoto ends up being 5.5-4.5 or 6-4 with a little practice. Juris ultra choice changes it up a little bit to. A strong u1 juri is kinda scary.
I always use ultra 1. It’s so satisfying to take 50% of a lifebar away with.
Anyway, my main foil is probably ex senpusha. If done on wakeup, can i stuff it with oroshi? My go-to is usually st.mp but that’s a trade at best. Any notable option selects I can try? I’m pretty sure that tsurgi gets stuffed by senpusha too. I’ll try and grab a replay shortly.
Even if it trades with mp it’s even or in our favor depending on the kick she used. Even more so if it’s ex which does 30 dmg per hit if my data is correct. I’ve never really tried using oroshi on her wake up so idk how that would work out. There’s actually an hk into ultra set up floating around here if I remember correctly. I never learnt it cause I prefer safe jumping her if I get a knockdown. I can’t remember but if you can combo after the trade mp that might actually be the most damaging ultra without ultra next to a safe jump.
I wrote a little guide to Juri in the q&a thread a while back.
and a setup for trade Yamese os u1:

Anyone got some good advice against Cody? The strat/matchup guide on the 1st page could do with some work…
Basically his frametraps **** me over so bad. I can’t crouch tech and the moment I don’t crouch tech, he throws me. I try to back dash and get OS’d, his ruffian kick trades with my axe kicks. I’m seriously trying to think what to do.
Also, ex zonk is so damn retarded, it beats absolutely everything and it looks safe on block.
wtf do you do? I’ve looked for a few vids of haitani, but whenever he did win, it just looked like he got extremely lucky, rather than him outplaying the opponent.
Only thing i can say is don’t press buttons while blocking. I know you said you get thrown and maybe I haven’t fought a throw happy Cody but i find patience when on defense helps with a lot of the health loss. I like the match though because it seems more fair since if you get the momentum, he can’t mash srk to get out. You can keep on him when he is down as well once you download his wake up tendencies. I don’t have any specific tricks. Sorry. Wait! If you can figure out his block string then you can ex grab him when he does that forward punch thing. That is all
Ex zonk you can beat by doing safe jump OS ex-oroshi. I do believe you can punish it, but I’ll have to double check the exact punishes. MP and HP criminal upper can be punished with s. mk x hayate and U1 respectively. FA backdashes can mess up his OSes, but use them sparingly. If you’re getting ruffian kicked outta tsurugi, I’m assuming you’re not doing IAT, and if you are and he’s just throwing ruffian kicks out there, then stop doing IAT so much cause he’s not reacting to it.
The mak bible in progress has a solid write up on the MU from before 2012, but it’s all still very relevent (page 61 btw):
http://otersi.com/makotobible/testspread_nov03.pdf
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help guys, and WOW WTF, That bible thing is superb! Who wrote that? I’ve never seen it before, but that’s amazing.
Alright, time to study up and practice.
Bible is in one of the stickies, it’s 5th down or something at the moment. Author info is probably in there, although off the cuff it’s mostly Blackadde doing the actual book, while Robo, mossad, vryu, and others are or have contributed.
The back throw meaties don’t work anymore, but most of it is still great for 2012.
EX Zonk is very punishable at -7 or 8f on block off the top of my head, u1 works but if it’s spaced far use s.mk xx mp/EX hayate the regular versions of zonk knuckle are even more punishable, but I think they push Cody back more than EX.
Anybody got a good strategy they use against Poongko fans? It’s hard to fight against Seth & his bullshit once he gets going because of the 50/50 guessing game he gets you in, what with his cross ups, block strings, overheads, command throws, tenden engine, teleport, fireball…(list goes on).
