Makoto Q&A

Am I doing my kara-karakusas wrong? I have been getting it when I’m outside normal karakusa range, but when I’m a bit closer, my short hits which pushes the opponent away. Is the karakusa supposed to come out before the short’s active frames? Also, it should be in to HK karakusa, right?

It’s a link not a cancel. You should try and double tap the st.short after st.lp to help with the inputs, thats how I do at least. Hope this helps!

Thanks a bunch. Knowing that info will make practice a hell of lot more efficient.

Nope, this isn’t AE so Blockakusa doesn’t exist. You’re supposed to be spacing the s.LK so it completely whiffs so the Karakusa can connect. If your short is hitting the opponent, the command grab is gonna miss.

Nope thats the tricky part. You must remain in range of the full kara-karakusa but out of the range that the st. short would hit.

You should rely more on kara-karakusa setups before you start to “free hand” use it; because if you misjudge it you will get punished guaranteed. You can check out the All about Makoto thread on the forums for some of the most common setups. But they’re are a lot more than just those simple ones, for that you gotta find out what works for you in training mode.

Does anyone have any “tricks” for doing s.HPxxSA2? I can get it somewhat consistently when I’m in the right corner, but I can’t do it at all if I’m in the left corner. It’s just harder for me to do two QCFs so quickly when facing that direction. I’m starting to get discouraged and have been using SAI and SAIII instead. There’s no point in using SA2 if I’m never going to be able to do this consistently.

Just keep practicing is all I can say. I’ve had the same problem as you, to be honest. For the longest time I was way more consistent with combos when I was on the right side, but I just kept grinding it until I was able to do stuff just as well on the left. This includes Karakusa->HPxxSA2.

You actually have more time than you realize. The QCFs don’t have to be done ultra fast. Make sure you’re inputing those QCFs as smooth as possible (slowly), then speed up the process as your hands and mind get used to the motions.

Really? Hmm, I was under the impression that the timing was very strict so I’ve been inputting as fast as possible as soon as I hit s.HP. Time to hit training mode.

Generally, when I’m on the left side, I do my QCF inputs slower than I would when I’m one the right side. For some reason, my hands won’t move as fast. But it works, and that’s the important thing.

BTW, no shame in sticking with SA1. It’s actually my preferred pick. No, you can’t hit your opponents with the “touch of death”, but there are just so many easy ways to link into SA1.

Does anyone have any timing cues for opponent wakeups on knockdown?

In the Makoto SSF4AE thread, there are some wakeup setups that would allow you to time some specific options (ie, MP Oroshi after you dash twice after an opponent is knocked down will be timed perfectly for a meaty). I’m really bad at looking at animation frames and can’t seem to time wakeups resulting in getting punished for attacking too early.

Wake up speeds very to a greater extent in 3s then they do in 4. Adding to the fact throws and sweeps do not hard knockdown in this game limits your canned setups.

The only ones I can think of/use are after ex hayate dash cr jab dash works on alot of characters, dash twds rh works on others and none of these are frame perfect and require you to delay your attack slightly and that they quick rise or dash slightly later. You can use these to meaty st fp characters on their standing frame or “meaty” karakusa etc.

Yeah it’s a little tricky with the wakeups in 3s. I generally watch for the animation/know the timing for each character. No tricks to timing that I know of though. You can look at the frame data to find out each characters wakeup speed but that doesn’t really tell you when exactly to meaty; just helps to know which characters wakeup faster or slower. Hope this helps.

I know these boards are dead, but what strength Hayate do you use to juggle in the corner after an EX Hayate? & Any tricks to performing it? I’ve tried reps in training at all strengths, and can’t land it for shit. lol.

It doesnt work on every character, I usually use lp Hayate and I guess its the only one working, but I dont know much about Makoto so wait for someone more competent to answer

LP Hayate.

It’s character dependent, though. I know for certain that EX Hayate->LP Hayate works on Chun, Makoto, Q, Urien, and Elena. I’m sure it also works on Hugo, Alex and probably Necro too. You have to kara-cancel the 2nd Hayate against Shotos, though. I think it’s QCF+MK~LP.

My question is does the lp hayate work on the twins after a ex hayate?

No, but f.LK works for a reset.

I dunno why but you can connect a non kara lp hayate against gouki

yeah I knew that. Thnx for the answer though.

Spacing specific, if Gouki back is against the wall the jab hayate will generally whiff if you do not kara (same with Ibuki and Oro). Push back seems to vary slightly due to screen positioning.
