I’ve been playing since day 1 but I have always been completely irate about this games throw system. It never seems to make any sense in terms of range and angle. I can’t tell you how many times I’m flush with the opponent and get a :h: attack instead then my opponent can throw me completely below the screen during super jump cam without any chance to react. Is there something that makes these more consistent? Does the person lower during jump have ALL the advantage? Is there a way to kara throw? I have lost so many matches to what should’ve obviously been a throw and gotten something I didn’t want or worse predicting a throw and getting :h: and then locked out of breaking. (either way this throw system is fuckin terribad >_<)
I’m serious though, does anyone have some light to shed on the oddities of the games throw system? I feel sometimes I have to be a pixel away and other times I can grab them a whole body away.

I feel this is important
I agree that this is important also.
I don’t seem to have problems. Maybe you’re pressing the H button too soon? It’s a 1 frame throw so you need to be next to them at the time of press and not take into account startup like with other moves. Even still it won’t always be easy to land a throw on a fast opponent. Sometimes you won’t be quick or close enough so your H or whatever will come out. What you need to do is use throw option selects so you get something that is less punishable or even a conversion when your throw doesn’t come out. With vergil it’s as simple as using downforward/downback H for throws(throws, missed throw = helm breaker). With strider, if I’m going for a throw, I’m pressing jump forward/back H, j.S, qcf L, (ground chain to bnb).
Some characters have bigger throw ranges and throwable hitboxes than other characters. Good luck teching the air grab every time if you’re Sentinel flying over Ammy.
Regardless, the throw engine is still pretty random. There are tons of matchups where both players are mashing throw at the start of the round, point blank, as fast as they can–but a lot of the time there’s no throw break and someone gets opened up. It’s just part of the game I guess.
Use a character with a bigger box. Other than that just practice.
Were you playing Nova? <_<
I was playing as Cap, vergil, task.
More than likely. Nova’s throw game is way too overpowered he can throw people from a quarter of a screen away. Broken
