Hey man, I’m getting into comic drawing also and figured I should throw my opinions in:
I would say if you like both anime and Western then mix. That’s what I’m doing (I’m in the same boat). I like western style for the exaggeration (dat ass is so huge, or dat chin is so manly, or dat dude has so many fucking lines on his face and looks angry) in the proportions and it makes sure that adults look like adults and kids look like kids.
However, I like anime style for the stylishness in some styles (like cowboy bebop’s artist). I personally am not a big fan of buff dudes, more of the lanky agile type (Like spike spiegel). As for chicks, I like the sexiness that western artists portray, but I like the cuteness that eastern artists portray. But I don’t like how some western artists make chick’s facial structure look like dudes (jaw bones too big, chin too big) but i also don’t like it when eastern artists warp chicks to be cute so much that they look like cardboard faces with giant ugly eyes on them.
So I mixed and matched in my own personal style, kinda got the size and some detail that western artists do, but took the less lines to make cuter/more stylish that eastern artists do. I would say don’t say “eastern or western” just do one you like. A lot of Western artists got a lot of influence from both. Joe Madureira has anime influence in his but looks very western. Omar Dogan is very anime looking but still has a hint of western in it, etc.
As for “trying to be very meticulous in detail” be VERY VERY careful with that when Comic drawing. I know it’s always nice to make your drawing the best it can be, but comics are as much about speed as they are about skill.
A great comic artist is the kind who can compromise VERY little quality and keep up an amazing pace. This is why you don’t see a lot of concept artists become comic artists, but a lot of comic artists become concept artists. Concept artists only know how to turn the juice on all the time, comic artists HAVE to leave a page a lot when it’s not “the best it can be” because that’s the job man, but can ALSO turn on the juice if they need to.
So one last piece of advice for your comic drawing, find a drawing style that LOOKS about 80% as good but is about 2-3 times faster to draw than your normal, detailed, non-comic art.
