Make use of bad players

Ground game is probably the most important part of 3rd Strike.

Right, ground game is more specific.
Ryan would you ever tell someone that was trying to improve to work on their Ground Game and leave it at that?

It’s difficult to understand for some people. You really have to get owned by someone with a superior ground game to fully understand the concept I think.

Quoted for emphasis cause it to me happened last weekend lol

I usually don’t switch characters, but if I’m going to main new character I’m probably gonna try it out on some new player. Players on GGPO don’t learn fast, or at all. There are people who are online for years and still suck, so this “don’t switch to help them out” theory doesn’t work.

it’s the environment which prevents new players from leveling up on GGPO. that and one of the worst regular userbases I’ve ever seen for any game.

The only thing that could keep a willing player from learning is peers. That or money but since money has been taken out of the equation, it’s peers.

If you’re that sensitive to trolls you shouldn’t play online, but I don’t think someone like zztop can prevent willing player from learning. I think no.1 reason for quitting is discouragement, and no.1 reason for not improving is not trying hard enough.

by environment I mean GGPO itself (the netcode and the laggy experience). it should not be surprising that a lot of GGPO players don’t level up when they play under those conditions.

the community is a small factor in comparison. but it’s still bad. threads like this are a good example.

If you can just meet a few guys who are serious, then you don’t have to worry about playing randoms.

I just don’t like the idea that all these random guys get labeled as “awful players who never improve.” I think they struggle because it’s hard to learn the game online. not because they’re somehow deficient as people or whatever. I know there are great players on GGPO and that they manage to play the game pretty well even online. cool people too. I just don’t think starting online is a good idea for a player in his first couple years. it would end up being pretty frustrating I think.

I agree that they shouldn’t be seen as players who don’t improve ( I was surprised to hear it but you don’t come off as a liar ) but at the same time the fault isn’t entirely that ggpo isn’t adequate for learning the whole game but rather that a loss is spit on in there, no matter who did the beating.

If the smart decision was to block and only because you would otherwise find yourself in a pickle, then the even smarter move was not blocking and overcoming in a bad situation due to your knowledge. It’s just not easier. On ggpo, ( I would later learn that some of them have no recourse ) it seems like simply getting hit makes you the stupid player. Although, I know it’s a load of josh and they’re trying to keep it tough, sometimes it doesn’t come off that way and when you got players saying it’s the same thing and calling would-be purists shitty even after giving your preferred platform a try knowing that your ggrouppo can carry the word then…well…you can’t expect people to be very clear in their distinctions about ggpo.

I do think there should be an honor system on ggpo. Something like keep tick grabs to a minimum. If you’re going to wiggle, at least make sure the processors keep running. If you’re going to pick Chun, please don’t comment after ggs. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not just 3S, but fighters in general have those users who stick around, but don’t improve. What I’ve found is they just don’t do the research or put the time in to learn. It’s not a lack of skill or confidence these guys have, it’s pure laziness or lack of drive.

If you want to get good at a fighter these days there’s very little excuse as to why you can’t with the internet these days. If a guy like BrolyLegs can persevere and excel then the only thing stopping bad players from improving is lack of motivation or work ethic.

I’ve helped a good number of players in 3SOE on XBL understand some concepts of their game that they were doing without realizing why they were doing it. You can’t just tell someone ‘use this here in this situation, it works better,’ because they don’t know why it works better. If you tell someone to improve their ground game, you have to show and explain why they need to.

A lot of those guys don’t understand basic things like hit boxes or frame data. Priority is a word that’s thrown around a lot to try to understand what’s going on, but that builds a reliance on things that good players will exploit. Practice is another word not thrown around enough. You have to practice building good habits, building reactions, executing, spacing and timing.

I’ve found that if you explain what’s going on with game mechanics and use that as a foundation, players will start to learn how to improve incrementally on their own because they’ll be able to recognize what’s going on in a match more often than not, and if they’re not figuring it out they’ll hopefully be playing someone who doesn’t mind answering questions.

Just my two cents, anyway.

Sorry if this is getting tangential but lots of people I’ve known throughout the years have seemed more interested in talking about how much people suck than helping them out at all. In 2014 I’m thankful for anyone you keeps playing this game, and its ok if someone doesn’t want to get great at 3s.

one of my best friends still plays 3s every now and then but would get frustrated with learning charge partitioning and bigger combos. he has the skill to do it and he’s actually one of the smartest players out there but he just stops playing when the frustration gets too high. he still gets better at the game but just very very slowly by incorporating harder combos. i’ve seen him able to pull off very hard combos in training mode but i had to keep pushing him and teaching him because he won’t do it himself.

Alex team beats Chun team. Marko beating MOV with Alex. Vanao winning with Oro. UltraDavid beating Pherai. James Chen beating Cruise. Gonzo beating Yuuki 5-0, Bafael beating exo-tech 10-0.

What in the worldddd is going on?

?

OP also had aero theme on, why would anyone connect to him?!

Did anyone care enough to come up with the best Computer and setup to use for GGPO?

Anyone got links to Bafael or Gonzo? I can’t believe what I’m reading. I want to see that it was mistakes and not domination.

Also, being surprised at quality players winning with anybody is weird.

yeah! I agree. I’ve definitely been guilty of this a couple times, and for no reason. really serves no purpose to put other people down, only discourages cool people from playing. something I noticed from the facebook group is there’s a lot of really new players who don’t have a deep grasp on the game yet but already love it and want to get better. you can see the excitement about the game whenever they post. which I think is pretty cool on it’s own. I think back over my last two years and think about the help I’ve received and the people willing to play friendly sets, even though I wasn’t particularly good and said some dumb stuff here and there. that kind of stuff is what being a community instead of just a bunch of random guys is I think.

I’m kinda rambling. I just think the longer you play the game, the more you can offer new players, and offering that in a positive way is really important. it’s easy to snark at people, make threads about “how to make use of bad players” or chase Hugo players away because they complain that shotos are too easy, but that’s not really useful.

a little love goes a long way!
