Azureus doesn’t bring my macbook to a screeching hault. I’ve never noticed a drop in system performance while running Azureus, but I also don’t do much with my Macbook either.
sure you could run anything under the sun on a pc. but there is usually some sort of equivalent for Os X. further more, you could bitch about having to learn a new os, or saying that apples are just for artists and “gays” (real creative pablo), but until you’ve learned and used it, you won’t understand why we mac users use it. it a computing experiece that is simply a cut above the rest, easy to use, aesthetically pleasing, and unbelieveably functional. out of the box it is a more rewarding experience then any toy i’ve ever had.
not only that but this thing is a work horse. i can create and edit all the artwork for my business, i can record music, create beats, play live sets. and then do all my school work and surf the web.
i know those can all be done on a pc too. but how many consumer level laptops can do them efficiently? sure they’ve got a higher price tag. but you get what you pay for
Anyone who has used Mac OS extensively (ANY mac OS really) knows that it works 1000 times better than windows. Everything actually works. The way it is supposed to…shocking.
Currently I use/own only a PC, but it drives me crazy with its unending unexplainable problems.
sooo… from what i gather, OSX > windows because it uses resources better, is more secure, has few viruses written for it, and looks hot? the same could be said about ubuntu, really, except that ubuntu is hella free.
i’m very curious/interested about OSX too, am i missing anything by sticking to ubuntu? starting to learn and like the Gimp right now.
You get better functionality with a wider arrange of standard business level products through Mac OS x, because it is a standard operating system. You generally get a quicker patching cycle for any problems that crop up, not to mention better support in general. Also its easier. Not by much, but it is. Plus if you really want to you can still get into the nitty gritty just like any unix system. So really I can see only two boons for ubuntu
it’s free
Appt Get univers is full of easily accesible illegal software.
But don’t forget your a linux box and if you aren’t careful your gonna get backdoored hard. pun intended and um no homo.
hmm… seems i’m not really missing much, then. i’m too low-level to take advantage of the top-of-the-line art software, too, so i don’t think i’ll find it worth my money at this point. thanks for the reply.
How is that again? No one I know using Linux has run into something like this. Seriously, if you get backdoored running Linux you are an idiot who believes “1337HaXX0r___” on IRC when he says he’s sending you a sweet video. If you install a firewall and get your software from the repos there shouldn’t be any problems.
Illegal software? I hope this is a typo. Considering most things available on Linux are completely free and open source I fail to see how this would be true. And I doubt anyone would be willing to put pirated software on their repository anyway.
Maybe you’re talking illegal from a patent/IP perspective? In which case I don’t think anyone really gives that much of a shit even though most developers STILL try to steer clear of patent bullshit.
No. Just no. It’s WAY more likely for a user who doesn’t know what he’s doing to kill his OWN system than for that to happen.
However, you will generally have an easier time handling OSX. Linux is for the most part an operating system developed by developers for developers. In general, I would say stay FAR FAR away from linux if you just want to use a computer.
The new macbook air is coming out soon so if your looking for a new mac maybe wait cause prices may drop on the older models. I was looking at the air online yesterday and while it seems cool for how light (3 pounds) and how thin it is, it has no cd/dvd rom drive. You have to install your software wirelessly using another computer or have an external dvd rom drive. It also only has an 80gig harddrive. I like my macbook pro, but I am not sure about the air.
Except you get zero support with Ubuntu when it breaks.
Yeah, as people have said, unlike ubuntu, OSX is a recognized mainstream OS, so it gets a lot more support from both Apple and software developers.
Like I said before, it sits in between unix/linux and Windows. It has a lot of the major benefits of being a linux system while still being mainstream enough for any normal personal to pick up and decide to use for normal use. It obviously gives up some features in order to be in the middle area like more freedom you would get from unix/linux and certain software you would get from using Windows, but all-in-all it comes out ahead in the tradeoff.
On a side note, anyone know of a GOOD bluetooth AND ergo desktop set for Mac? I’m currently using the Apple bluetooth keyboard and mighty mouse and I’m not happy with them at all. Also, I get wrist problems when I type on a non-ergo.
I really liked the Microsoft desktop sets I’ve used in the past and I’m looking at getting the MS Entertainment Desktop 7000 or 8000, but the extra buttons aren’t supported (which is fine), but I also feel a bit dirty using a MS desktop for my Mac. Hahaha.

Don’t worry, you wouldn’t be the only one to mix and match. I’m using a Microsoft Natural 4000 right now with my Linux box. I don’t feel dirty, though, because it’s a damn nice keyboard.
I am talking about software that violates patent issues, such as dvd decoders and other things.
And My friend runs linux and has been back doored and lost control of his system.I merely mentioned it as a possibilitie not as an everyday.
I mean if you really want to look at it, it could happen to a mac as well, except I know of no way to get sudo or root on a mac without a user at the terminal allowing it.
Edit: I may have meant apt get multiverse not universe… it’s been awhile since I looked into it.
also taken from ubuntu guide:

Different distributions may manage their repositories differently, but the key concept to take from this is that there are different repositories, which have different sections, which may reflect different levels of support and/or stability, and/or legality or license and/or frequency of update (eg. main basically never changes after release, that’s what the updates and security updates are for).*
I realize this doesn’t mean the software is illegal but it is possible to obtain illegal software through it.
microsoft ergonomic natural keyboard is NOICE
macs are nice but the software support just isnt anywhere near what you can get with a pc. macs are perfect for school(college note taking and paper writing) but anything else i would say screw mac. they have a really nice looking mac coming out in 2weeks that is $1800 and is less than .2 inches tall(i think) and weighs 3 pounds.
price wise macs offer crap for low prices but pc you can build a computer super cheep and it can still be good.
btw if you want a laptop get a dell i have 3 of them and my dad uses them for his work( hes an Internet tech)
air
no dvd/cd drive
no hard drive, limited to 80 or 64 gb flash memory
how am i to install apps? on the other side, EVERY BUSINESS man will buy this
On a proper Linux setup, this would be exactly the same. The problem with Linux is that far too many people end up running as root for convenience and destroying any security they have.
And the way you describe it, there’s plenty of “illegal” software on OSX as well considering how many Linux apps have been ported over. This putting aside the idea that somehow bundling an open source MP3 decoder coded from scratch with an OS being distributed for free is wrong. Software patents just bug the shit out of me.
As far as I know I’ve never heard of repositories hosting actual pirated commercial software.
To stay on topic however, get a Mac. Between stuff like parallels, bootcamp, vmware fusion and the fact that 90% of linux apps can be easily ported you can pretty much run anything on it. Just buy some extra RAM.
lol the mac air has a 80gb hard drive
Yeah, I don’t see the price difference being realistic between the 2 macbook air models. OK, so the expensive one is .2 mhz faster and has LESS memory? Is SOLID STATE memory better in some way? WTF DOES IT MEAN!!?!?! My iPod has a bigger HD. And I guess you can forget about games that require the CD to run.
Hahaha, have you ever seen the movie “Best in Show”?
“I was using my Powerbook at starbucks, and he was at the starbucks across the street using his powerbook”
(or something to that affect.)
