This thread on reddit discusses how u can get an Untechable grab on the frame that one of your moves hits/is blocked.
Now, can we apply this to Modok? I know before on incoming people like to do M cube and then buffer the ADUF to negate pushblock. Is it possible to just always get a grab off this setup???
I thought that people were fully immune to grabs on incoming unless they pressed a button so this definitely seems interesting as it provides firebrand like setups on incoming.
I’m fairly certain this can work on incoming as I’ve seen video of magneto grabbing a guy getting hit by raccoon spitfire assist on incoming
I’ve had untechable grabs when I go for the air grab into unblockable setup a few times. I got it once by the cr.M causing the guard break and I can get it more consistently when I use Chun’s lockdown assist.
cr.M, M cube, aduf, adf, j.H/grab is a basic incoming setup that goes for a grab on pushblock, goes for a quick low/high on block, and if you have the right assist, you can combo on hit.
Question about this. El Gato has kind of a dope ending to his corner combos where he does s.j B (2x), LPB, ADD, s.j C (Almost at ground level) into cr.B, cr.C, Force Blast. The ADD into s.j C is what I’m having a problem with. I’m not air dashing down quickly, I’m getting stuck (it looks like a very SLOW dash down with hardly any movement). I use the schmidt select on pad so when I dash, i’m essentially doing A+B+C down + C. Any tips?
Was curious if anyone could help me brainstorm on a combo ender. I’ve not really been playing much at all, but when I can I’ve kind of fallen on Mag/Dok/Strange as my personally favorite point/point/assist combo now with bolts.
Anyway, with drones, you can dhc from mag to dok, and use drones for an extra extension into another hyper battering ram. I’ve found you can do a similar thing with bolts, but it feels too difficult for me to do consistent. So I was hoping someone might know something I don’t about bolts extension here.
normally, I do the basic mag into dok HPB DHC, and then otg+hypergrav, backdash into wallbounce, groundbounce, and then I just call bolts and try to manually jump cancel a F+H into another F+H between the bolts hitting, into F+H xx M blaster xx HBR.
This would build the full meter for the extra hyper and do nearish 1.2 million give or take. But I just can’t do the jump cancel into F+H with any real consistency. It is possible, but very hard. Hoping there is something easier to pull off.
Unfortunately, I don’t have anything else for that situation. I’d just use the (f.H)x3 combo you are trying to do, if it even works with that much HSD. Alternatively, you can try using bolts for the OTG pick up. You can try stuff like:
(back dash, cr.M + bolts, L blaster, L blaster, f.H)
(back dash, cr.M + bolts, L cube, L blaster, f.H)
(back dash, cr.M + bolts, L blaster, f.H)
(back dash + bolts, cr.M, fly, IAD j.L, back dash, cr.H, L bomb, f.H)
It does actually work. But I wasn’t sure if my execution was too bad, or if the HSD was just too tight to do reliably. I’ve only landed it a few times. Thanks for the bolts alternatives though, I’ll give them a shot.
So I’ve actually been wanting to play more again lately. I think my very long hiatus from playing competitively has made me have more fun with it when i go hang out with the AZ scene. I’ve ultimately accepted my fate and will be keeping Doom. I like strange bolts a lot, but not having something to protect Dok’s weak points became very noticeable to me in practice. Too many people ducking the beam and hitting me, etc. The last time I was playing I was giving rocks another go and actually liking it much more than I remember.
Angelic mentioned some Dok player I had never heard of named Priest who he said plays with that team setup. Not a lot of footage of him from what I could find, but he seemed to be running it during the last Curleh.
But yeah, no more bothering with making teams optimal. I realize I like playing all three of these characters, and I like the Doom/Dok follow my lead with rocks after some testing. Not having finger lasers pop people up out of the beam is really convenient for using it for punishes/mixups.
Anyone got some Doom rocks tech? I think I will ultimately just try to use all three of Doom’s assists depending on the match up at this point. But aside from messing around with a few combo extensions, I never did much else with it.
Nice to see you sticking with it Brainpipe! yeah there is footage out there of Priest… not a lot but enough to learn some cool shit. I think its very interesting that no two Modoks really play alike. Some people use cubes more liberally than others, others like to take to the air, others like to zone etc. Just really cool how we all have similar fundamentals but approach the character differently.
I’m still sticking with missiles but being that I use rocks and beam on my other team, i realize there are some matchups where you clearly want to choose between the three. IE missiles isn’t always the best solution.
After a 2 month rut with ironman, I’m deciding that I’m going to stick to Modok/Haggar/Doom and use it as a purely defensive team when facing things like KBR team or similar ground oriented rush down (wolverine). For everything else I’m going Firebrand/Doom/(ammy or phoenix)
Yeah, I just have too much of a love/hate relationship with the game. In some ways I can’t take it seriously as a tournament game, but I still like to watch tournaments of it, and I still like to play it. And I think I like playing it a lot more now that I take it less seriously. I feel like I just left something unfinished with the game. I never really bothered learning MODOK TAC combos even. Plus pretty much all my friends out here still play actively. Either way, my time for practice is more limited than ever, but I feel like to hell with making stuff the best for tournaments, just give me three characters with 8 way airdashes and flight and I’m good.
So far the only footage I’ve seen of priest that was really cool was his ability to punish strider calls and his really good AA confirms with df.H. Always fun to see someone else play Dok, just like you said, He is played by so few people that are spread so far out that a lot of individual style shines through with him.
I still never liked the Missiles playstyle with any character, but a few match ups I absolutely want it. I always play against Angelic though when I go out, and missiles vs shuma is useless. So maybe that soured me on the assist long ago.
Since I pretty much run a single assist team, Doom is just too useful to not play. He can just swap out his assist for any given match up and Mag/Dok get a lot of use out of all three options. If people couldn’t Duck bolts so easy, or if I was playing El Gato’s team, I’d stick with bolts, but I just won’t give up Magneto for anything, and I won’t give up Dok for anything. So Doom it is.
