Looking for Love: Ibuki General Discussion Thread

Just play your game, man. Act as if you never heard of Tokido or Darren Sensei and that its the first time you’re playing them and stick to your game plan.

You’ll surprise yourself. Good luck!

Also, let us know if you need sparring partners.

Sure thing. Speaking of which, who is darren sensei? I’ve never heard of him.

If you suggest general as the be all and end all, could you for the love of God stop posting junk that has zero to do with the game?

Thanks…as it makes people who wish to learn miss stuff.

I think Seeya plays Ibuki, so you might run into mirrors. In mirrors there’s probably no reason to do DWU if you get knocked down from neckbreaker because it may be harder to block her DWU setups aka you have more things to watch out for. Do DWU when you get knocked down from EX neckbreaker (if he can do the unblockable), Tsumuji and sweep is also very good to do DWU because she will have less time to set up DWU counter.

Save meter for EX Kazegiri. It’s very handy against blocked kunai vortex. I like to mash reversal invincible DPs after I block a kunai no matter with what character. Blocked kunai can have gaps even when he tries to do a 3f move (TC4 or cr.lp) so your invincible DP will beat it. Or kunai can lead to true blockstrings but if you mash your EX DP, your reversal won’t come out. That’s my option select in Ibuki mirrors or playing against Ibuki in general. The only way to beat it is of course to block it, but many Ibuki players are hardwired to press buttons after blocked kunai, so test him on that.

I could write more, but if there are things about the mirrors you want to ask, I can help.

I was out before I had to… Went 1-2 and played waaay too basic (tournament nerves got to me hard) but thanks again for your write-ups Moon!

Good stuff to @Gabe_Art for beating K-Brad!!! Made him salty on Twitter lol. Another Ibuki player called Mattypie almost got into semis as well. Did you meet him by any chance? He beat NGL Chris and he is best Ibuki in Norcal.

Sako using Ibuki to eliminate Gamerbee sheds single tear of joy

I only saw pugera and sako. I’m happy that some ibuki players got out of their pools. Tournament nerves seem to be striking everywhere though. I saw many dropped combo’s through-out the set including sako dropping his own tsumuji loops. (Or this was intentional.) I was a little disappointed when sako didn’t pick ibuki at all, but I could understand why… Until I saw him against gamerbee since he did beat him last year at evo using ibuki.

I knew Sako would use Ibuki vs. Gamerbee. Adon is a good matchup for her.

I think the most impressive player is Pugera. Had to fight 3 Yuns (Popi, Kazunoko, and Taiga) and won all of them. Dude is too sick! Also, isn’t this his first EVO AND first international competition? If so, that’s pretty damn expensive. Not even Sako got Top 16 on his first EVO.

I think those were intentional staggers to bait reversals. He literally stopped hitting buttons.

Pugera was godlike, I was so impressed

I started playing Ibuki recently, and a few days ago I had the local scene over to my place to watch Evo and casuals. Played a bunch of guys, got to experiment with a few match-ups. I started playing a Poison player, and I almost instantly noticed that the BNB I had been using doesn’t work on her. cLP, cLP, sLP, sMK, Neckbreaker. The sLP doesn’t reach her.
Is this Poison only? I tried several characters, and it was working on everyone except her.

Nah theres a few (check the spreadsheet)

Out of the new 5 though it works on Elena, Rolento and Hugo only…

Try and get into the habit of only confirming off of the 2x cr.LP only though… The standing LP is unnecessary imo

While the st.lp in this sequence is character specific yes, I use this combo regularly on characters that it does connect with on both hit and on block and is my go to frame trap into st.mk > ender.

Once they start blocking the st.lp, then I’ll go right into a grab.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been trying to do. Sometimes muscle memory takes over, though, and I end up doing the sLP anyways. I’ll keep working on it.

EVO is over and there is no Ibuki discussion?

There are a number of things to take away from EVO, the most important thing to note is probably that Sako hasn’t gone into training mode ONCE as Ibuki in Ultra and only using ft.st.HP Kara and the standard f.LK DWU setup.

The other thing to take away from EVO is mostly that there are many setups I managed to pick up, half I showed to Rush that seemingly haven’t been either discovered or favoured with Ibuki players.

The direction people should be going with Ibuki is looking into normal unblockables, and using the Vortex as a DWU counter. There is no other way to play Ibuki solid besides cr.LK and CH set-ups.

My GF came back to London so I can’t play a night much, so I really ask for people to post more in the critique thread and post their videos. Looking at top Ibuki players for new setups isn’t going to work anymore. Sako gave us many ideas for corner unblockables vs. Akuma and Makoto, but besides that pretty much everything else we know came from Mingo or general testing done by this community.

Currently the only thing I have for Rev.4 is a bunch of new set-ups for DWU and avoiding the new character’s wake-up options. That is only enough to make our Ibuki play as good as it was in AE. It won’t be long until everyone online will be Red Focusing our st.MK xx LK/EX Tsumuji blockstrings, forcing us to start using SJC Kunai instead.

I posted in the critique thread, your analysis seems solid. I think we have to remain adaptable as the game evolves and play more of a read-based game. Once players start learning the set plays, your game will be read like a book. I think using a variety of strategies and mixup will help as the game goes forward.

LOL I already did red focus against Yang’s cr.mk xx rekkas but it’s not something you can always do unless the Yang is on autopilot. I can tell Sako hasn’t been practicing much, he recently had a baby.

You can still use other things to counter DWU other than just kunai like empty jump overhead. Pretty good to catch crouch/stand techers.

I think it will be a long time for people online to start red focusing her tsumuji strings. The game’s been out for like 4 years and people still don’t know the Ibuki matchup that well. I didn’t even see a red focus crumple when Pugera played on stream. It could be because he mix up a lot of command dash/tsumuji which can be risky to do red focus.

I’d love for you to show me the other half at some point

Just an FYI: Anyone using training mode to practice SJC U2 should use the memory feature in training mode. if the ultra connects you just have to press the back/select button and it restarts you in the saved position. That way you don’t have to watch the whole ultra. It is also faster than going to menu and pressing restart.
