I’m planning to do some traveling to learn and get more experience outside of what I usually play. I’ll be going to canada cup this year, so I will be training for that.

Well then I’ll let you know when I can jump on, maybe in a month or two. By then at least, you should be able to beat me senseless. That would make me very happy. Did you try VF5:FS?
Even though I’ve been a mod for awhile now, I haven’t actually done anything mod-ish except troll and fix Damascus’s safe jump and vortex thread.
While Abel kind of has a “vortex”, it’s not safe at all (even roll , roll is unsafe as it can lose to wakeup throw) and if you make a good read, you can even get a massive combo thanks to Ibuki’s st.LP and Abel’s fat face.
Meaty body splash (which good Elfs should be doing) will beat your wakeup dashes. If you predict a slide you’re better off using FA: safe level 1 hit into backdash. Not all slides are meaty however. A common slide setup is if you get hit by a Tostada and you get a techable knockdown (eg: you did wakeup backdash and got hit airborne by a Tostada), many Elfs will go for a meaty slide after seeing you quick rise because it’s the only thing they have that’s fast enough to keep pressure on you, besides maybe cr.LP lol. But this setup isn’t meaty and if you look for it, you can reaction f+MK and get a combo.
Also I should mention that no good Elf is going to Run xx Slide (unless they are making a great read), as this is -9 and very punishable. A general rule of thumb is that if you see Elf run, he’s going to Tostada or Tortilla, and if you don’t, then he’s either about to jump in (should be easy to react to) or he’s baiting something out, like a backdash or dp.
I read this awhile ago and I think it’s still a great read, and applies to this discussion: http://shoryuken.com/2012/07/19/lost-strategy-series-quick-guide-to-reaction-based-defense-by-thelo/
Elf’s overhead is an unblockalol at the right spacing. You should know this, no?

This is very wrong. You do not go into the Slide form the run, you cancel it and go into cr.HK which is +0 on block. Besides, many great El Fuerte players in Japan would just cancel into a cr.LK and do into this annoying run-stop block-string which is one of the hardest to defend frame-trap/tick-throw set-ups in the whole game. Only good thing is that it builds meter and you don’t get chipped, but as you said, his overhead is unblockable (although thankfully Japan doesn’t abuse this).
That’s what I meant. Good Elfs will stop their run and then go for cr.HK, which is far easier to react to. His cr.HK is also actually -1 on block, which is why I advise Ibuki players (and any other character with a 3f normal) with good timing to do TC4 as soon as they see any blocked slide. Alternatively you could f+MK, because 99% of slides are followed up with throw, and f+MK sets you up nicely for a big Tsumuji loop combo.
cr.LK xx Run xx Stop spam is not a “block string” and is very easily interrupted provided you know it’s coming and are willing to push buttons. You should be pushing buttons anyways. Not like Elf has any real threatening frame trap game.
Oh Izuna lol. You’re such a mind-reader. BROMANCE! (Referencing chat with RC)
You don’t even have to play SF dude. Don’t even stress about it. If you wanna teach, then teach. If you wanna commentate, then commentate. Playing the game just helps you figure out what you really want to do with the game.
RC has a good Ibuki, I can’t lie
I don’t want to say anything negative (since I played the same way before) but I see many players walk backwards at the beginning of a match so I just walk them to the corner.
Izunaaaaaa. Skype meh brah
lol @ aXuaLiAlex (I think…)
Mingo:
A good Abel will roll and go for a meaty stuff after the roll. I haven’t seen any decent abel doing a roll while I’m waking up, giving me the chane to U1 the hell out of them.
Yep, most of Abel stuff is unsafe because as I said, the character heavily relies on guessing. Mash EX kazegiri and you’ll beat any of his meaty throw, tornado, cr.HP, whatever. But he will sometimes just beckdash or roll again trying to baid one of your DPs. If you did not mash, you’re in a good position. I remember seeing you playing Juicebox Abel a while ago, haven’t you spotted this stuff? The actual purpose of a good Abel is to be unreadable. Playing Rico Suave, he will mix between ending in front of me and behind me to then land a meaty option such as cr.HP or Tornado throw, and will also once in a while just block to check what you are doing.
This is not a secret anyway, Abel is a high risk-high reward character
Fuerte will run slide from a far distance to make the slide safe. Or is that cr.HK? I have trouble recognizing them
I know about El Fuerte’s overhead. Amazingly enough, I’ve NEVER seen any Fuerte use it against me. Lolz
Anyway as far as I know, Focus - backdash seems to be a good option for everything except his throw, in which case you should just dash.
Aren’t there some possibilities in which a body splash would be armor break?
BTW, related question: is Overhead airborne at the very first frame? How about f.HK ?
I’ll just stop here because it seems like we’re agreeing but not thinking we’re agreeing, and we’re both stating the obvious quirks in the matchup.
I haven’t played a decent Abel since. I blame my losses on online lag and the fact that he’s somewhere on the West coast or best-case central USA while I’m east coast.
Tostada is never an armor break, especially since it can never be done as a reversal.
Depends what you mean by “airborne”.
I can’t quite find where my research went, but f+MK and f+HK are throw invincible on frame 3 startup.

Aw this is my last post for a bit, so I hope I cover everything.
I’m pretty certain that Run -> Slide and Run -> Stop -> cr.HK isn’t something you can tell the difference off, since the Stop is like a single frame or something. Not only that, it’s used to hit meaty. It’s not hard to see if you’re looking for it but it’s not -1 when done meaty. The cr.LK -> Run -> Stop -> repeat is not something you can poke in between, I mean cr.LK is +3 on block and it’s pretty much the same as C.Viper faint cancelling her cr.LK. Try recording the pressure and seeing what you can do to it I suppose, I could be wrong.
To be honest, if I had a set up and the time, I would probably make something for VF5:FS instead =)
If you can’t tell the difference between Run xx Slide and Run xx Stop , cr.HK, then chances are you’re not paying very close attention to Elf when he’s pressuring you. It’s not the most obvious thing in the world but definitely doable. Maybe you just need audio or something.
Everytime an Elf did slide on me I was able to successfully U1. Speaking of which, I would recommend U1 in this matchup just for that.
I’d have to test the cr.LK xx Run xx Stop, but I definitely doubt it’s a blockstring, and probably not a string with gaps of <3 frames.
I finally got around to rewiring my stick a couple weeks ago. Someone slap me for not doing this a lot earlier because it makes so many things easier.
Been practicing double loop from both TC4 and st.mp st.mk with a SJC U2 for execution training with reasonable success. I don’t go for things like that online because I’m not consistent enough but it makes single loops a breeze after practicing that for 30 minutes before playing matches.
Then you loose to a Fuerte in tournament and you get teh salt =P
Random character is random.
As salty as I can be about this character; I hate saying he’s random. I keep convincing myself that come on, Capcom is no that stupid, they didn’t make such a random character and there’s got to be a way to get him.
Then I loose to a Fuerte and I rage again
Anyway, let’s change the subject.
There are two majors on east coast this August:
- The Capcom’s 25th anniversary qualifier. August 11 - 12 in NYC, and top 16 for SFIV AND SFxT gets a cash prize. I hate to say that but… I just restarted training at this game, nobody plays it so top 16 seems doable
- The summer jam in PA, 25 - 26 august.
Anyone going? For those interested in this Aug 11 - 12 tournament, I may be able to host you at my place, just PM/ask.
Also, I’m gonna go to this summer jam tournament with two French friends who’ll happen to be there on holidays, so we’re looking forward to get a room for 5, we still need two more guys. Plan is arriving on Friday night and leaving on Sunday night cause I’m working on Monday
Anybody interested in sharing a room? I’m also gonna bring my Xbox of course and, if I get it on time, some encoding material to save matches. Mingo, you going there?
I’ll most likely be at Summer Jam. I dunno about 25th anniversary; I didn’t know that it counts as a major.
As a early warning, I have literally played no more than once a week (Saturdays) since I went to ECT, thanks to my double jobs. Combined with the fact that again there’s no real local competition to train with, means my gameplay is badly out of shape. I’ll be dropping one of my jobs in the beginning of August due to changed hours, but I still dunno how much time I’ll be putting into SF4, since I have a bajillion new great games to play and a majillion games to finish, and I need to reboot my sleep schedule/caffeine tolerance/etc.
tl,dr: When I go to Summer Jam, I’m probably gonna suck.
I’d love to travel, but I’m too cheap lol. There is a major tournament in my area during those days, and I have to attend there, so there really is no choice for me.
Why didn’t capcom hold tournaments in Canada? It’s like we don’t exist. D:
Not sure this qualifier is really a major, but well, I’d expect a tournament with a cash prize for all top 16 being considered as a major
Haha, Capcom hosts two tournaments in the US and no one in Canada. But anyway, it’s not like they are having tournaments everywhere, only 2 for all Europe for example
