when im playing a new game im not familiar i put that shit on the hardest level play the comp and beat it a couple times . sometimes it takes hours lol but it does teach u how to read patterns and up ur defense game .
I… Really wouldn’t suggest doing that with ST. The CPU is stupid hard and totally wrecks anything you do pre-emptively. It has a pattern and all, but it’s just not worth it.
They say playing against the CPU is bad for your health, and it’s true. Keep playing against human opponents and study greater players.
To get better at a game then yes but for just learning the basics of games then Mugen’s idea is solid to a point. Except for ST because it does have insanely difficult CPU, especially the U.S. version.
If you wanna be a one hitter quitter that never even comes close to winning tourneys…
For that CPU suggestion; that’s how I first started to play better; but it does take MASSIVE amounts of trying, especially in ST…cause…Capcom was evil back then.

I think the key here is to understand what you can do in the game, then create a plan of attack. Emulation from the best players can help, but the fundamentals is what will help you get better. Since you’re playing my favorite fighting game, let me link you a few vids. Sirlin really breaks down ST well, and even goes to advanced tactics. Great starting point; Always good to get new players here.

oh yeah forgot to mention that if u are really a newb newb u should just use ryu or ken to understand the mechanics and what not . then u can work your way up to awesome charge characters like guile cause hes a beast.
Yo miller, if your ever on 2df, give Gamegeezer a holler, PM, whatever just get my attention, i would be glad to show ya the basics or just spar. I have to say i’m about average skill level in 3S and ok with alpha. Although me thinks i’m better off sparring than teaching hahahaha. 
When you say Ken you must be talking about O.Ken because N.Ken plays waaaaayyy differently then the standard SFII shoto. Honestly, start off with Ryu or Guile. Guile isnt a hard character to learn (but for some reason is a bitch to master).
