Ok, guys, I think I finally came up (remembered actually) with a good idea for our weekly sessions. Long time ago, I ran a small tournament at downtown Funland (when it was still around) in Toronto. The way I did the brackets was pretty unique (or not). It was a king of the hill format. So I seeded the people that joined according to their skill. I remember I had Samir at the top. So what happened is this:
Let’s say 1 is the worst, and 5 is the best. The tourney would start off like this:
1 plays 2. If 1 wins, he climbs up a rung in the ladder. So now the order is:
2,1,3,4,5
Next up, 1 plays 3. If 1 wins again, he again goes up a rung, so now the order is:
2,3,1,4,5
Next up, 1 plays 4. If 4 wins, the final is played. So the order is:
2,3,1,4,5
And 4 plays 5 in the final.
Each week, players have a chance to rise up the ladder, to become the new king of the kill.
Format will be best 2/3 up until the final, when it becomes best 4/7.
As for the seeding, we can decide this when we meet this week. I personally don’t think the seeds matter THAT much the first week, because the best will rise to the top anyway. Still, we will keep them decent, and try to best reflect player skill.
This week, we’re going to do a test run with SF4 ONLY. Also, this week I will definitely purchase that tripod, and get it all on tape. I don’t think it will be long at all. If everything is a success, we’ll start running the other games with this format as well.
