the news only focuses on the negative. take you for example. you’re a nice decent human being. but that makes for boring news. so of course sociopaths get all the attention.
This may be one of the best posts I’ve read on any forum I’ve ever been a part of, ever.
I take action every day by helping when I can within my means, and not imparting any more suffering or hatred to other human beings. There are legal limits to ways you can “help” and only so many people who have the mindset wherein they can listen and acknowledge differing viewpoints intelligently.
Everything takes a certain measure of sacrifice, but there are many steps before people can even be cognizant of what they are willing to sacrifice and why they have to make the sacrifice. When people are given the illusion of personal power, they have little motivation to work as a unit and make a grand change (unless immediate survival is involved).
One problem is that intelligent people in small groups can easily maintain a rational ideology, but anytime these purposeful goodwill think tanks and grassroots organizations grow, the altruistic endeavors give way to polarizing politics and absurd distortions of reason. It’s like starting a whole new religion with good intentions, only to have it get distorted once base human tendencies leak in- drip by drip.
For example, a friend of mine helped create a group in college to inform people that Israel has also committed atrocities on Palestine, and that the retaliation (i.e. terrorism) isn’t a mindless assault by warmongering savages, but a reflexive reaction to decades of oppression. It started small and everyone in the group understood the gist of the message. Soon enough, outside propaganda of Antisemitism grew and not only did the growing group had to fight off vitriolic remarks from the outside, but also had to individually extricate themselves from every radicalized idea that popped up from a member and power struggles ensued. This, from the very same group trying to maintain impartiality.
This is a recurring theme in all these grassroots/ organizations that sprout. Unless the agenda at hand follows some very basic force, like hunger, most broadminded ideas become depressingly kaleidoscopic.
If anything, I don’t think humanity as a whole evolved to live in very large groups, but that’s another anthropological discussion entirely.

Groups of people are the worst. Whenever someone stops thinking for themselves and starts thinking they have to do things for “their people” terrible shit like this happens constantly. If he just thought for himself as an individual, and really asked himself “Do I want to shoot this little girl?” instead of “God and my people need me to make a statement” this could have been avoided.

I watched footage of a group of extremists mortally wound a man.they shot him in his last moments, and then shot up his corpse with an AK-74 the mob stomped the fresh corpse to a pulp, in the name of allah and shortly after tethered the mans corpse to a car and dragged him down the street resulting in the mans neck resembling a Dhalsim stretch. they treated the moment like a parade. I view murder as a singular act, a small squad at the most. but when a society gathers to kill one who does not follow their path that’s pretty outright infuriating. I guess the only thing shocking is that I expect this type of savagery from religious extremists.
