Upon further review, the art in later DB is still very good, but there is a fundamental shift in its intent. Toriyama didn’t seem to have as much of a sense of fun with the drawing, but he gained more of a mastery of pacing, particularly with his line work. It is very difficult to control pace by using line to induce the reader’s eye to move at a certain speed, but it seems like DB–particularly the Freeza arc, and the Cell arc to a lesser extent–does it very well.
Or maybe Toriyama was capable of doing that all along, and just felt it was necessary to employ it more at that point in the series.
Yeah, those guys (Nowlan and Golden) are great. Whenever I see a random pinup or a couple of pages here and there, I want to see more of their work. They don’t seem to be doing too much comics stuff lately, though. Or if they are, it must be under the radar because I don’t know about it.
Yeah, I wish Nowlan would come out of the woodwork more often as he’s easily my favorite comic artist. He’s notorious for being slow (like Charest). His newer work (like, last 5-10 years. Yep, I’m old) has actually stiffened up a bit, but his older stuff is some of my favorite comic art evah.
As far as this generation’s artists (I’ve been out of the loop), I was a fan of Bachalo, A. Hughes, Charest. I new some Wildstorm cats back in the day, and I remember the younger artists just creaming when Charest knocked out a page.
That’s terrible, terrible art. I can’t believe people are still excited for this Joe Mad nonsense. I thought I was looking at a new Alpha Flight comic when I saw this cover. I thought it was Puck Vs. Sasquatch. Took me a while to realize that midget was supposed to be Cap and the red furry guy was Sabretooth. How is that NOT Puck/Sasquatch? With Loeb writing, there’s just no way this can be good. Hopefully this’ll be one of those comics that turns out to be so bad that it crosses the negative threshold and becomes good.
I don’t think it’s possible to disagree more.
Last I checked Puck had brown hair and a mustache
…You think that “A” on his forehead STANDS FOR CANADA!? :arazz:
…Michael Turner for covers
Alex Ross
Jim Lee
Francis Leinil Yu, for some reason i like his art on new avengers a lot…especially that cover for ‘fallen son: wolverine’
…and Don Figueroa that foo’ is sick when it comes to transformers and such…anybody got a picture of that guy, i think i ran into him once at walmart…it was kinda weird…
I guess I’ve matured in my tastes or something. It’s really depressing seeing everyone on the internet trying to be him.
Michael Turner is just as bad, EVERYONE LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME. Superman, Batman, Flash, and Green Lanturn should not look like pallet swaps.
So yeah, my favorite artists are James Jean, Scott Kolins, Paul Pope, and Hiromu Arakawa. I have a love/hate relationship with Corey Lewis. And I, like everyone else, love Jack Kirby.
I really liked Greg Land’s run on Ultimate Fantastic Four, even if he did trace/steal from other people. Whatever, that art was great. Fuck the haters.
