Hey guys. I’ve read all the noob FAQs, including a big chunk of the HDTV lag FAQ, but I still don’t have a solid answer to this question.

I’m practicing links and having trouble (of course). I know my timing needs improvement, but how much of the difficulty comes from my TV’s lag? How should I compensate for it?

I’m playing SSF4 (360) on an HDTV with a VA panel (LG 42LH30, the AU Optronics version) that has about 30ms of lag. Using both a MadCatz TE and HRAP3 EX-SE stick.

On some characters, e.g. Ken/Ryu, I can pull off most of the links after a few tries and am working on improving my consistency. I didn’t play SF4 and just have casual pre-SF3 experience, so this feels like an average place to be.

But when it comes to, say, Guy, I just cannot pull off anything reliably. Even his basic Target Combo (mp > hp) is giving me hell. I can’t identify any consistent visual or audio pattern/cue to help me land it, as I can with Ken/Ryu. I don’t feel a rhythm here. The margin of error seems like just a couple of frames.

I don’t mind beating my head against the wall trying to improve as long as there is something for me to learn and improve here. If 30ms of lag is going to make tight links nearly impossible (and teach me bad habits), I’d rather just move on, focus on improving in other areas, and save that for a time when I get more serious and pick up a lagless display.

Thanks for any advice.

Target combos aren’t links, you essentially just mash target combos out, I think that’s why you can’t get Guy’s combo.

I guarantee its not your tv. Keep at it, its all about timing. Try different rythems characters have different timing to their links. Just keep practicing.

Press :hp: when :mp: hits (if you know your frame data, press :hp: during the active frames of :mp:).

As for dealing with the 30ms of lag on your TV… keep practicing and it shouldn’t affect your execution. You should eventually be able to do things without even looking at the TV for any sort of cue, it’ll all be ingrained in muscle memory. Lag is only really significant when you need to do things on reaction or when there’s so much of it that it’s bothering you to see your attacks come out 2 frames later than usual.

Thanks guys.

So tv lag should not have any affect on your execution? only reaction time?

It depends on how much lag.

Are we playing the same game? All target combos require some sort of timing, you can’t just do them in order and have them always come out.

You still have to hit target combos in a timely manner. Play around with Dudley’s target combos and you can tell the difference.
