Ling Xiaoyu Thread

I’m thinking I should be doing “exercises” for my execution. 20 Phoenix Stance cancels (1+PPP > 1) on both sides and 20 Rain Dance cancels (1+KKK > 1) on both sides as well for starters. I need to get the stance canceling down before I can master the string or the breakdance.

Also, that color is a Miku color.

The thing with trying an overhead upon guessing she’ll do a low is that if she hits you out of the air, she actually has a lot of options for big damage. One of her EX moves that causes a wall bounce always hits if you use it against an airborne opponent, and after the wall bounce she can set you up for some nice damage too. I think counter-poking is something you can do against her nicely, but I think it mainly comes up to trying to mix her up a lot. I’m having a tough time getting that down as Xiao is my first mixup heavy character.

Also, at Kuma, the hair color through me off from Miku lol, her hair was more of an aqua, but that color isn’t out yet, so I understand xP

Hey, don’t worry, you got me, Mr. Random, to help you along the way. And officially, Miku’s hair is teal which is more green than blue. I tried the blue color closer to it, but it looked too blue. It was better to go in the green direction than the blue one since she’s referred to as having green hair. Speaking of random, I want you guys to experiment with, when at long range, gauging reactions from the opponent using California Rolls and Shooting Stars. This was part of runsies game with El Fuerte. It was surprisingly effective at times, but I would not rely on it, especially in this game.

I’m getting better with her loop. I realized my problem is that I’d go back to neutral after stance canceling when I need to be leaving it there on the second db input. And I’m sad to say that Team China Girls was not quite suiting my playstyle. My first team was Xiaoyu/King, but I’ve swapped them around and have had astonishingly good results since I’m more familiar with them. Both have ridiculously strong mixup games. So, should I call this team King Xiaoyu (as in Ling Xiaoyu) or XiongOso (Bear in Mandarin and Spanish respectively), or perhaps Xiong Gato?

Using California Roll outside of a setup seems very risky considering non-EX is not hit-immune, has fairly substantial recovery, and still leaves Xiaoyu in RD when she comes out meaning she can’t block right away. Although, if you have the Block Assist gem and the meter to spare, this MAY (big emphasis there) be a viable tactic at the right distances.

Using Shooting Star from neutral seems slightly better, but anyone with a decent anti-air can punish you for it so I wouldn’t rely on it, like you were saying. Canceling a normal into LK or MK Shooting Star seems okay though because usually they don’t/can’t react in time. I’ve been using st.MP xx Shooting Star quite a bit with some success, especially following up with cr.LK xx Fortune Cookie.

Also, Turn of Fortune > Shooting Star (using the jump-cancel tiger knee input) can really lock down an opponent who has gotten scared and is just blocking.

Well, don’t forget the California Roll followup when applicable. Another option to consider, and might be safer, is to use Back Layouts with feints and actually attacking.

And for Shooting Star, I was thinking more of using it to bait the opponent coming, not for you to come to them. Even then, you could mixup the different versions used since they all have different descending trajectories, to bait out those anti-airs.

Oh, I see. So like, whiffing LK Shooting Star from neutral to try and get your opponent to approach?

Seems like a decent idea but unless you have a life lead or your opponent is getting greedy, I don’t see it working too much. I could be wrong though.

The big problem with it is the attack’s 38 frame startup. This is why I think using California Roll attacks are another alternative. If you’re dealing with a character that can get in quick like Kazuya, I wouldn’t think about using LK Shooting Star.

California seems a bit risky to me if it brings you up close to a standing opponent. Whenever I’ve tried it, people who don’t know what it is or what it does seem to throw out a low to test the waters so to speak, which usually works and causes Xiao to take a big hit. The only thing I’ve done with California Roll online that I think is really funny to watch, I saw another Xiao do it, is after you knockdown an opponent, if they don’t tech it or roll, you do California Roll to their opposite side, and then do Cyanide back over the opponent to end up where you started, sometimes you might also be able to do another roll to their other side before they are fully up. I find the first couple times you do that, the opponent has no idea what you are doing and they always go on a really defensive period where all they do is block or they’ll throw out their wakeup move in hopes that you’re still moving around everywhere.

Not sure how viable it is, but it’s kind of funny too watch lol xP

I actually forgot about the roll

If you anti-air with her California Roll kick (which is misnamed Cyclone Left for some reason, it should be Kangaroo Kick I think), and you hit with it high enough (and are close enough), you can follow up with Mistrust twice, or Dark & Stormy / Turn of Fortune. Mistrust does more damage though.

Would it be more reliable to just cancel out of your stance and try the cr.:hk: loop?

I don’t know if you can cancel and hit cr.HK fast enough. I didn’t try but I’ll fiddle with it.

That’s very interesting to hear!

Mr. Oso’s got a couple of practice problems for you guys. I’d do them myself, but I’ll be busy with homework and preparing for finals, so I ask you guys to try some things out if you have the time.

  1. Use Xiaoyu’s st.HP as a poke or to help ease the distance in. This move has frame data of 15-8-17 while st.MP has 10-2-20. It should combo into launcher which should help in bad matchups.

  2. Use blocked, cancelable normals to cancel into her stances. Try things out like an ambiguous crossup Back Layout or use it to get behind the opponent or perhaps California Roll and its followup. Also, st.MP > RD > Turn of Fortune works, but the timing is strict.

  3. Think of appropriate color for my King to go along with my Miku-Xiaoyu.

  1. You mean do a meaty raw st.:hp:? I’ve done that before and it seems only decent on wakeup, but I think it is still unsafe considering if it is blocked, she can and probably will be punished. Also, I’m not sure if it does ease the distance in, doesn’t she step back to where she was after the move? BTW, I’m not on the game to test this, but I figured I’d try to help as best I could.

  2. This is risky and I’ve wanted to do stuff like this for a while, but I can’t get myself to practice it online. The only viable option I think would be to do a poke xx RD, California Roll behind them. If she does Back Layout, they can block it, or anti-air it (I’ve gotten shoryuken’d when I did a Back Layout like this by mistake). Her AOP stance on the other hand would usually go into Wave Crest, or sometimes what I do is upon block, I cancel into AOP, and then do Shooting Star from AOP (adding the j. input before hitting :k:)

  3. Wait for more colors…I can’t think of anything for King…honestly.

No, not like that. Think Yun’s palms. With 8 active frames and 0+ on the first frame could be nasty for counter attack setups.

Yeah you have frame advantage after meaty far st.hp. Like +2 or +3 or so. And it’s pretty decent as a mid-range poke so long as you space it well and don’t abuse it too much.

Day of reckoning is coming… the infinite patch is ready for launch, so we’ll have to see if it screws with Xiaoyu’s sweep loop.

I have a feeling that it will likely reduce the number of reps you can do, if I had to guess I would say that off Cyanide (f+MK) into MP Hakkesho, you’d probably only get four sweeps before it drops, once the patch goes live. I am hoping I am wrong and that you can still get all six because otherwise the infinite patch is a huge stealth nerf for Xiaoyu.

I’m certain though, that off raw Cyanide going straight into sweep loop, you should still be able to get 6 reps in, but the timing is stricter.

I dl/d an update just now not sure if it was the infinite patch or not i havent played in a few days it added gems and a replay analyzer and i was still able to do 6 reps of the loop

its not the infinte patch yet but that should be any day now

anyways I still see no reason as to why her sweep loop is going to be nerfed

the MP Hakkesho loop needed to go mind you

but i have no faith
