Ling Xiaoyu Thread

What is a bit sad about the breakdance is that it really degenerate the other character combos. I have quite a lot of flashy combos with Jin, meterless, into tag, to super etc, but nothing does as much damage as boost to Ling’s breakdance… It’s really good for those characters who doesn’t really have any good combos without boost (Sagat comes in mind), but for other it’s kinda depressing :frowning:

Still, I think there would absolutely no reason to pick her if she lost breakdance ( and i can see no reason why to do it, as it’s normal juggle within the game intended mechanics)

Degenerate her other juggle combos, maybe, but she still needs ground combos to get back in. Besides, I don’t think Xiaoyu’s meant to be a combo monster.

I meant her partner’s combos

This is true, but her breakdance pretty much confirms the whole quality vs. quantity thing. Do you want to get in more damage with Ling’s breakdance (quantity) or do you want to be flashier (quality). Personally, I do the flashy combo if I know both the flashy and the breakdance combo will lead to the opponent’s end. It is always nice to finish off the match with a flashy combo and surprisingly it happens quite a bit.

For the flower power mixup when you tag cancel they have to block the incoming character not Xiao right, but when i tried you just have to block xiao regardless what side my point character is on dunno if im doing anything wrong.

Did a video on that Hiten

You only have to block Xiao.

For that flower power mix up i found that julias hcf+HP overhead will hit every time against crouch block if you do it as soon as she tags in because it pushes the opponent out of the flower power ranger and connects. Theres probably a way to block it if you’re ready for it though.

If Flower Power is not a true blockstring, which I don’t think it is, theoretically you should have to block a crossup or overhead if it’s timed properly.

What are you guys doing vs a good Rufus?

Get Xiaoyu out of there lol, no, the best you can do when he knocks you down, since his Falcon Kick is hit most dangerous is just try to guess which way to block and then backdash your way out of his area. At least that is all I do against him so far since he is good against Xiaoyu.

Having trouble against characters with stupidly OP poke chains (Kazuya/Heihachi). Tips appreciated.

How do you cancel her rain and phoenix stances so she returns to standing? There’s nothing on the in-game command list for this - kinda weird :\

Thanks.

We should really up s beginners guide for those questions, answered 10 time already.
:d::d: to cancel any of her stances

Hey, Xiaoyu people. Looking for a good offensive character that doesn’t need to spend much meter for decent damage. Practicing some of Xiaoyu’s stance changing stuff, and before I start getting serious with this character, I have a few questions.

  1. What is her general playstyle? I get that her jab pressure is good, and she can’t play a great footsie game, considering her far normals’ startup. But I’m not sure what im actually supposed to do with her. Any help on this one is greatly appreciated!
  2. Is learning the Sweep Loop aka The Break Dance vital to this character? So far, I suck at doing this combo, but after seeing how much damage it does/how easy it is to apply it in combos like off a launch, or extended juggles, I feel like learning this before anything else.
  3. Does she have a generally prefered spot on teams? I could see why she would be put on point or in the back, considering her bad matchups are mostly popular characters like Rufus or anyone that can space her out. And with her Breakdance being easy to add on to most Tag Cancel combos(I use Ogre, and she can start the dance off an Owl’s Hunt or a juggled Hunting Hawk.), I can see why she can be a good second. Is she one of those characters that can be placed in any spot as long as her partner compliments her?

I’m not the best Xiaoyu as I just started using her, but here’s my opinion.

  1. She’s pure rushdown/mixup. In footsies range, you’re going to want to either throw out st.MP or cr.MK cancelled into Phoenix Stance and then into Wave Crest to make it safe, for the most part. If you’re playing someone good, they’ll catch onto it and start reversaling through your cancel, so be careful. On hit, you can do another normal canceled into Phoenix Stance, and then into Phoenix Talon, or go into her sweep loop if you’re in the corner. Other than that, standing jab pressure is her meat and potatoes. You’re going to basically jab at them and either hit them with an overhead into her sweep loop, or cr.MK into whatever. If you’re having trouble getting in, Shooting Star is + on block and quite difficult to anti-air for a lot of characters.

  2. Yes, IMO. All that meterless damage off of an overhead/juggle is too precious to pass up.

  3. She can play both spots competently. She needs little meter (Only for her alpha counter and maybe EX Shooting Star if you don’t feel like reflecting fireballs), and builds it quite nicely, making her a nice point. On the other hand, she does get an obscene amount of damage off of a tag-in, so she can play anchor too.

I believe her natural spot should be second as she can really boost the other character combos, and really benefits from starting up close (after combo, or even block tag with frame advantage.

I didn’t want to take up all the space quoting your post, so I’ll just take a small piece from it:

  1. Trike pretty much got it down, she is pretty much all mixup with a lot of pressure. The reason I focus on mixup more is because that is the way you are going to be getting all of your combos, don’t get me wrong, her standing jabs over and over is great, but it can be blocked high and low and from the people I’ve played, it doesn’t work for long before they start reacting during the string and possibly hitting you. With Xiaoyu’s low HP along with the female cast, damage is something she can’t take well.

  2. Technically, no, Xiaoyu doesn’t need her breakdance as there are options that could be done instead of her breakdance that do okay damage. However, if you ever want to go anywhere with Xiaoyu, her breakdance is an absolute most, it is by far the best technique that has been discovered for her thus far and it is necessary if you want big damage on her combos.

  3. As Trike said again, she can play both, from what I’ve seen of her being played in replays and how I play her, it seems most people prefer her as their 2nd character as she can come in and do big damage and once she is in, it is good. However, at the beginning of the match, since you don’t start right next to each other, the other person can run if they know she needs to be up close.

It’s probably better to be using rain dance for her breakdance instead of phoenix, for two reasons that have become apparent to me over the past few weeks:

  1. If you fuck up and your unstance doesn’t come out, Mistrust is unpunishable, as opposed to sitting there doing heavy map sweep just hoping they don’t quick-rise

  2. If your inputs aren’t precise, you can accidentally super in the middle of your breakdance if you’re doing down-back and using phoenix stance, this can’t happen if you’re using rain dance.

It also looks funnier, imo :stuck_out_tongue:

Down side is you have to get the motor skills down to do it in two different directions…

That is true. I guess I just took for granted I did it that way :open_mouth:
