Light-up on activation button mod tutorial

 1. Hehe. The one you got off me would reset the brightness with the three punches, but the three punches wouldn’t reset tournament mode. I’ve changed it so it will now. When in doubt, if nothing’s on, punch reset will fix it. You saw me freak a little that first evo night when it magically stopped working. That won’t happen again now.
 2. Adjust the resistances. Even though its not really recommended, the outputs of the pins should be limited internally to about 20mA. Using a resistor is better of course, but you could in theory run white or blue leds directly connected, no resistor. But if you can, just calculate the right resistor.
 3. Of course! There can’t be too many. I don’t know how long it’ll be before I have the full Art plexi+drilled shaft setup going.
 4. Were you thinking just as a screensaver type non-interactive mode, for the free win against epileptics? How would it react to button/stick presses? I’m at 99.0% of the 4k of code space I have to work with, so I doubt I’ll be able to, but clue me in and I’ll try.

Woot! Thanks much man!

1.Yeah I knew it was the same thing that happened to your stick when you showed it at evo. I had just forgot what you did then to get it working again.
2.I already had the resistors soldered to your board so I didn’t feel like removing them to lower the resistance. Its probably better suited for the wired stick anyways.
3.I think I’ll get around to making a vid eventually.
4.I was thinking just as a screen saver. It would just display the effect while nothing is being pressed and then what ever led effect it is set to will occur.

That video is possibly the coolest thing ever, awesome job Toodles

Dang that’s some pretty sweet stuff right there. I basically just got started learning with an Arduino and a breadboard and made a couple of startup effects and stuff but now I feel like I’m re-inventing the wheel at this point… at least it’s still a learning process I suppose.

Awesome work.

Heya, Toodles, I got a video assembling your LED board for anybody who may be new to soldering.

Installation coming in a bit! Gotta run to radio shack and get a few more LEDs so I’ll still have plenty for my Arduino. Lol.

Where did you get that Soldering Badge?
Laugh.

In the pdf and video I see that the configuration mode is entered by holding jab. The question is: if I hold jab (for 10 seconds) for a bingo or tap, will it enter configuration mode?

Adafruit industries. Was a special gift for orders of $120 or more. I had to have it. Lol. I dunno if they run it anymore, but if you pick up enough stuff from them, you can certainly ask if they have one.

Well, kinda. The jab button has to be held by itself, with no other input, for that time period in order to go into setup mode. So if you’re charging for TAP, you will not go into setup because you’re also holding Strong and Fierce down. For Cody, I dont know Cody very well, but it seems his zonk and bingo are just a single punch button held. If the stick is connected to the LED controller, it also counts as inputs, so you’d have to not move the stick for ten seconds while not pressing any other buttons, no blocking, no jumping, no moving, no nothing. I’d be very surprised if that ever happened in any game you play. For gods sakes, throw out a Short every know and then and problem solved.

But even if it does, if you leave Jab pressed, for however long with no other buttons pressed or moving the stick, so what? The LED controller is in setup mode, but that will have no affect on how the game controller sees thing; even if the LED board freaks out with weird or unintended lighting of the buttons, your controls on the game will be entirely unaffected.

Edit: Random idea struck. If you wanted to disable going into setup mode, like after you’ve set the settings you like, connect a wire from any unused input on the LED controller to ground. The LED controller will think its a button thats always pressed, which means you’d never go into screensaver mode, but you’d also never be able to go into Setup mode, but you’d still be able to do a three punch reset or enter tournament mode.

Ofcourse, it’s a very unlikely scenario. I only thought of this because I did hold just jab zonk for about 30 seconds today (for the first time I’m sure) against a runaway player. He seemed to like to just run away and taunt.

Very good to know, thanks!

Got everything installed, and 2 of the LEDs I took out of my box of junk have like no intensity to them, bridged the pins to the resistor arrays corresponding to the output I wanted, still no dice. :arazz: Oh, well, I’ll crack it open and get some better LEDs some time. Anyways, gonna start working on installing the LED board video. Still, really great stuff. =D

An update?Installation is up!

Apologies for it taking so long. Youtube was being 8-button and there was like a 3-hour pause where absolutely no data was being uploaded. Weird.

YouTube was being 8-Button.
8-Button is dick.
YouTube is dick.

I had a feeling you knew what I meant. Heh.

Hey Nerrage im about to purchase toodles led board and was wondering what size and type leds you used? If anyone else knows what works best please recommend them. I like purplearms arc-eyes but 25pounds is a bit steep for me. Cheers

Nerrage in the video says he used 5mm.
All he did was put them next to Button.

Other people put LED inside Button.
They use 3mm LED.

Don’t buy the LED that Nerrage used.
They weak.

Which is why I only hot glued them into place. Cause I knew they weren’t going to be my final mod. I just wanted to get that up ASAP while the board was still young. And Toodles board got here before I even had the chance to order good LEDs.

Toodles, any chance you’d sell an LED controller pre-assembled? I’d compensate you for the assembly, of course.
