Let's talk about money - The Finance Thread

Funny, I make about $42,000 and have a Master’s…

I don’t have a Masters, but I do have a bachelors and I make about the same. Which really isn’t much here in Chicago. If I could make at least 60k+ I would be good.

Congrats man! I can’t expand the text anymore, but in my mind it’s several times bigger than this.

I don’t have a degree but I make 32,000.

Anyway’s guys what is the hot stock everyone is investing in? I wanna start making moves in the stock market

IT/coding is much more highly compensated than other knowledge based professions, for whatever reason. Not that I hold it against IT people themselves, but it is almost a classic illustration of how life is not fair.

The city I’m in, my ex-GF makes $120k+ with no college degree making sure lawyers get their email. Meanwhile same city, bench science positions working on the molecular biology of cancer start at around $22k a year, minimum of a BS required and good luck competing for the position without at least a MS.

Making sure lawyer gets emails? 120k!? There needs to be loads of dick sucking to justify it. Is she attractive?

People that don’t get into med school with their pre-med degrees are FUBAR normally. The system is so crappy now that people have to literally take a gamble going to college and putting themselves in debt for a shot at med school. Not too long ago people got in straight out of high school like CNN’s Sunjay Gupta. The rest have to take these dog shit 22k/year jobs.

Higher education has been in a massive bubble for the last decade or so. Sure, some people with the right degree in demand like IT/coding will be profitable but everyone else that gambled with student debt will be losers. Also, couldn’t ninetiesarcade gotten a better paying gig in silicon valley? Last I hear they pay around 6 figs for comp sci grads. I remembered this because a lot of the comp sci grads living in Canada left their country the second they graduated. Their jobs back home pay 35-50k.

Not on that level, no. Not trying to throw her under the bus saying that either. The guys in position to decide her salary already have more attractive trophy wives, and can afford more attractive mistresses if they want them. I can’t completely rule out anything sexual going on with her employment, obviously, but she really isn’t the candidate that would get hired on that criteria if you follow me. Plus she has plenty of similarly compensated coworkers for whom dick sucking probably isn’t an effective negotiating tool. They just pay their IT people a lot because IT people get paid a lot, and their IT people do in fact occasionally get poached away to work at other places that offer them even higher salaries.

And there is more to it than just email server uptime, obviously, but if you understand the gist of that work you understand the gist of everything else she does. Secure document servers. Inter-compatibility with the systems at newly acquired/merged firms. Etc.

The glut of Bio majors who wash out of med school acceptance don’t really go after the $22k jobs though, or don’t stick with them very long if they do. They’ve got the hunger for success and/or prestige and/or the urge to help people directly, rather than the hunger to do basic science- which is different work entirely. Those kids will do things like go into pharm/medical sales, or get PA degrees and still make good money being almost doctors, or get an MBA/MHA and middle manage somewhere, or at worst go for a masters in the hopes of re-applying for med school.

The $22k employees are usually people who actually want to be doing research. You can tell because they could be making more money doing almost anything else. Shit, as of last week the minimum wage for a full time fast food worker in New York went to $31k a year.

I work for a teaching hospital system affiliated with a major med school that’s part of the university where I got my BS in Biology, so I am pretty much neck deep in the details of this. The hospital I work at, a starting IT job that requires “practical experience in lieu of a degree” pays about double a starting medical lab job that requires a BS plus additional technical certification.

Damn $120K for dick sucking…I wouldn’t mind having a six figure job doing cunnilingus.

Basically your relationship with your wife tho

I wouldn’t mind having a six figure job curing cancer. Willing to provide the cunnilingus for free.

Seriously though, just recently turned down a job researching the biology underlying aortic aneurysms because I couldn’t afford the pay cut from my current job as a goddamn office clerk.

Man i probably should update myself since i’m just making shy of 57k a year. Now if they do away my on call pay which accounts for al ot of that i might jump ship. Granted in live in INDY so that might be alittle hard since i know few peeps in the IT field around here.

Agreed…Wouldn’t mind have a side job though.

LOL, rcaido when’s the next gathering or whatever. This time I will finally show up providing there is at least CVS2 and SSF2X

This is why I quit after starting my masters. Everyone complains that science in America is falling behind, but no one wants to pay us any God damn money.

Yeah im not sure, i just got back from my vacation & the bills is over $13K for this month…Got to start from scratch again.

It’s funny how closely our lives mirror each other. You only have to look at your professor to see how paperless you will become.

Every single person I know of that went the academic route has become virtually destitute. Even the guy doing research that can change the world gets paid 50k and he’s pretty angry about it.

Like you I said, “nah, fuck that.”

I need to find the title of this job and I will learn it. Even cut in half, I could make bread over here and do things.

my goodness, EU markets are getting HAMMERED!!

@Starhammer, sent you a DM

Saw it. Thanks. Now I need to try and find something like that over here.
