I came across Cannon Trading, who offer a free platform and free data if you use one of their partners. My grandpa has had an account with them for awhile, so I’ll probably use them eventually. For now I’ll just mess with TD Ameritrade / ThinkorSwim. It seems they have a bad rep amongst day traders, but I just want a one stop shop to paper trade right now.

e-minis are always a good gamble. A lot of people I help always give me stock tips. I mean, you can do forex, minis, puts, but you really have to be in the game so to speak.
Honestly anything you do with your money is gambling. Savings accounts and cd’s are worthless nowadays. You have to research and try some kind of active day trading to make any money, but again it is really like gambling. You have to be good at it
If you have 3-5k to do something with, it’s really just picking your poison. I mean, try online poker honestly. You can get better returns. Unless you have 100k, its not worth putting into any kind of account. Sometimes banks have cd’s available at 2-3%, but you need to know when they come out because rates like that are only offered for a month or so at a time. Even then, with 100k, your making 2-3k a year on it, and the minimum is usually 5 years 
You don’t need super profits to make money though. If you can find a way to make an extra $50 a day, you are making another 15-20k a year. So, even being really conservative you can make a lot more money. My uncle knows a guy that stops at $500 a day, or rather makes it his goal. I mean, $500 a day at 3/5 days out of the week is another 100k a year. Honestly be conservative though, small gains really add up over the long term. I mean, $100 per put or call is pretty much bare minimum, but if you can make even an extra $20 a day, thats like another 5k a year. You would need million in a 30 year cd to make that nowadays

I like what you are saying. Believe me, if I made an extra 20-50 a day, I’d be doing GREAT. Yeah, the first thing I thought about was trying to dump some cash into a CD, but that, as you have mentioned, is worthless. Right now, pulling another $12,000 per year would be a nice way to start it up. I said it before and I’ll say it again that I’m going to go the dividend route as it looks like the best way to go on a budget.
I also found a little book called 10 rules of the intelligent investor. Gonna be reading that pretty hard along with the other book I found. Here’s to getting rich bitches!!!

I finally got up to $2000 saved in my sharebuilder. Time to look for some stocks to invest in. As I’ve stated before, I’m looking for the extra paychecks via dividends. If luck is on my side, I might get another 10Gs that I can put into investing. It be about time to get the paper.

I’m not sure if index funds have been mentioned here. But I am definitely looking into starting one either later this year, or this year. This will be my first big investment, but I have researched investments, and I find that index funds are highly reliable.

I have owned stock in a mutual fund since 8/31/2010. The fund is set up to automatically reinvest capital gains.
In 2010, I had $300 in long-term capital gains
In 2011, I had $375 in long-term capital gains
In 2012, I had $175 in long term and $100 in short term capital gains
I did not make enough income to be required to file a tax return in 2010, 2011, or 2012. Next year, when/if I file a return for 2013 taxes, do I report only long-term and short term gains/losses from 2013, or all from 2010 through 2013?
In other words, do the gains from previous years carry over?
No, gains don’t carry over. Gains are taxable in the year they’re realized (i.e. when shares are sold) unless the fund is in a tax deferred account. If you were selling shares in 2010-2012, then you don’t need to report anything from those years, because they’ve already been recognized (you just didn’t report them). But if you didn’t sell shares in those years, then those figures were unrealized ‘paper gains/losses’ . It was only temporary info that doesn’t matter when calculating your gains when you actually sell.
So unless you plan on selling shares of the fund in 2013, there won’t be any gains / losses to report on your tax return. If / when you sell shares, the fund manager or your broker should provide you with a “1099” statement reporting your realized gains / losses, which you’ll report on your tax return.
If the fund generates dividend income, you’ll need to report that income on your tax return when you’re required to file. You can ignore dividend income you had in prior years that you didn’t report. The IRS already knows about it, but they can tell when it’s not enough to file a return.
