Let's talk about money - The Finance Thread

mother fuck i got a letter in the mail saying i lost 800$ in my mutual funds

Hey, is there anyone on SRK that has experience with the Series 7 certification? Iā€™m thinking of looking into this (yeah, I know: worst possible timing :D)

Sorry to hear about that. Donā€™t be discouraged. Time to get back in the game. Iā€™m not a big fan of mutual funds myself, but I donā€™t see much wrong with buying an index fund at this time. The S&P is looking like a good buy across the board.

Whatā€™s wrong with the timing? Education is always good. Well, I know it covers basic investing infomation, and I know you have to have a sponsor. If youā€™re sponsored, go for it. Iā€™ve been wanting to get the 6,7, and 63 for a while for my resume, but thereā€™s a funny thing about that. You have to already be working for a registered broker before you can go get them, and I am just not finding anyone to hire me on right now.

Ive lost over 4K in mutual funds. The choices were not mine but my fatherā€™s. Im just going to switch to an index fund and etfs.

Diversify your bonds, nigga.

 yep. I thought I replied to it,didnā€™t see it, and repied again. whatevea.

I used some promotional codes to setup custodial accounts for my 3 nieces and nephew and my daughter at Sharebuilder. Essentially thatā€™s going to let me buy $50 worth of stock for each of them for a $5 investment. Pretty keen huh? I thought Iā€™d buy all the girls Disney shares and my nephew Oshkosh Trucks.

The code Iā€™m using expires tomorrow I think, but it seems like thereā€™s always a new one. Itā€™s ā€œINVEST50ā€ and that lets you get a $50 bonus when you setup one of their automatic trades. Thereā€™s no minimum investment, so I just buy $1 worth of stock (plus $4 trade fee) and then about a month later theyā€™ll add $50 cash into the accounts and I can buy more stock with that.

Sharebuilderā€™s pretty handy for this kind of thing since it has automatic dividend reinvestment and allows you to buy fractional shares. The oldest of these kids is 6 years so by the time theyā€™re 18 Iā€™d imagine they should have a decent sum.

EXTREME DOUCHEBAGGERY

Zecco raised the minimum balance for free trades to $25,000 from $2500. So much for the little guy.

resurrection!!! Me need more knowledge!!!

Hey, you can still take advantage of that sharebuilder promotion and get yourself some free money. use the code GIFT50 and youā€™ll get a $50 bonus on your first trade. Iā€™m not sure how long the code is valid for though, so act fast. When I activated the last code for my neices, you get a couple months to fund the account though.

Anyways, buy like $5 worth of Coke stock, and then use your $50 to get some more.

heh. Now thatā€™s what Iā€™m talking about. Thanks as always CD. Droppinā€™ the knowledge like sand on a vagina. Looks like my last paycheck from McDā€™s will go in this direction. by the time the dust settles, things should be cool and I should be on my way to never woring for anyone again.

peter schiff says the dollar is going to collapse.

thoughts, srk?

Yeah, do what Schiff said to do, buy investments with foreign interests. Itā€™s the only way to protect yourself. Almost all of the biggest American run companies have huge multinational contracts at this point anyway, itā€™s pretty hard not to be globalized.

It looks like inflation is rising, which means you can get better rates on government savings bonds. I picked up a series I bond today with a 5.7% yield. If you buy them direct through the US treasury at www.treasurydirect.com, you can buy as little as $25 at a time with no fees to buy.

Series I bonds are somewhat illiquid, when you buy them you have to wait at least 1 year to redeem them, and if you redeem in less than 5 years, you will give up 3 months of interest payments. But itā€™s beating what you get on a CD right now.

Iā€™d just like to say on the record, fuck taxes. Taxing taxes of taxes, shit is stupid after a while. I earn my money dammit. Why work so hard if Uncle Sam just wants to swagger jack my wallet.

Oh yeah and donā€™t ever try to sue the govā€™t for not paying you on time or some shitā€¦its soooo not right what our govā€™t can do that we canā€™t do back.

No Iā€™m not looking for advise ust a place to say that since I ahve to pay tax on my car AGAIN because of living in a different state, and the concept of the govā€™t claiming they can tax refunds even though thats money that was ALREADY taxed in the first place. On top of that when I spend the money it gets taxed AGAIN. Iā€™m trying to collect bills for my company form the govā€™t and the govā€™t is deliquent and we canā€™t backcharge them for it cause its the govā€™t ::sigh::

  • :bluu:

Oh that reminds me. Series I bonds are tax protected until you redeem them.

hmmmā€¦ US treasury bonds huh? You know if that can be done via direct deposit? If so, a new avenue of my master plan may have just opened.

ā€¦Yeah, I know. I should stop being so lazy and look up some of this stuff on my own. one day Iā€™m sure I willā€¦Just not sure when the last day on Earth is going to be. Hereā€™s praying it isnā€™t a tuesday.

Yup, the account can link straight to your checking. They give you this crazy decoder card when you sign up too, you gotta have it to log on. Youā€™ll see what I mean.

If you want a really good read on bonds, Iā€™ve got to give a shout out to my friends at Pimco, they wrote this book called ā€œBonds: The Unbeaten path to secure investment growthā€. It describes all the different kinds of government and corporate bonds you can own, as well as bond funds.

I use bonds as a source of income as well as a hedge on stock losses. I try to make it a habit to have at least 25% of my money in bonds, both so that I know when to sell my stocks to keep profit, and so that I have cash available if stock prices drop.

Aw Yeah!! that was the foothold I was looking for!!! Iā€™ll be in that site today. Thanks for the info again CD. Itā€™s about time the government started working for me instead of the other way around. looks like I wonā€™t be working at all in about 2 years or so after all.
