I struggle with myself on this concept all the time. I honestly really like the knife and will try to play around with it to see if I can discover any happy flukes online with it. I personally view the knife as a second fighting style. Similar to how Gen has two fighting styles. Cody is normally a frame-trapping combo monster but with the knife it makes him mid-range footsie threat.
I believe the knife is under rated. Especially with the buffs it received after 2012. Command over head is great and the two hit MP stops people from focus dashing in at you.
In my opinion the knife really puts Dudley in a tough spot. You can usually out poke Dudley aside from random upper cut. I think it’s also good in the Chun Li match up too. I find that the Chun Li match up usually turns into footsie since she can SBK or mash lightening legs out during block strings.
Also in my experience player get more defensive once I pick up the knife. They try to focus on gettin it out of your hands safely which causes a lot of tick throw set ups since its the easiest way to get Cody to drop it. I usually try to make a mind game of this and let them tech the knife off me once or twice and then I save an EX Bingo for that next tick throw for some big damage follow ups.
I -want- to believe that Capcom made the knife for an important purpose that nobody has really made an effort to grasp. However the fact can’t be denied that he losses a lot, if not all, of his wake up pressure with the knife so generally though Cody is just better without the knife 99% of the time. :[
As a side note. In the corner sometimes I’ll do a cl.Mk to Knife throw (+6 on block on believe) to c.Hp. Works really well since most people have never seen it before. :]
Do you think the knife could help me with Balrog? I can fight him alright, but he’s still a frustrating matchup to this day. I’m wondering if the knife in certain spots could help Cody out in the particular match.
The best (and probably only) way to land the overhead combo is hitting them out of a focus attack. But if you master it, it’s yet another hefty damage modifier to Cody’s already impressive damage output!
japanese players tend to play very carefully without taking many risks. to use it effectively you also need to be in a specific situation (ex zonk fadc or corner).
Well… To be honest I don’t know for a fact if it makes this match up better. Here’s what I do know. The extended range on c.MP beats out his c.HK. Standing MP beats out his dash punch even EX because it’s two hits. c.HP will beat his jump in.
You’ll need to play a more patient game plan, but just poking him with block strings is threatening enough to make anyone make reckless mistakes.
Also, the knife is a really fast projectile. Throwing it randomly and picking it back up against Balrog is usually ok since you can block upon pick up. I’ve also noticed most balrogs would rather retain their charge than dash punch a knife pick up.
When getting pressured by the likes of Dudley, mirror Cody, Fei, Juri in the corner, etc. I’ve been letting zonks go to get out. Almost always ex. I’m I getting away with murder, lucking out, or is this a good answer to pressure when not used predictably?
Hey guys I’m pretty new around here (, first post actually, after lurking for a long time).
I’m no noob to cody but I think I need to work on my footsie game and some other stuff before I actually get somewhere.
Anyways, I have a couple questions:
Why do at high level, players do (I think) lp rock into lk rk?
Do you know any particular set ups for a 4frame safe jump? I only know one and it’s off of ex rk.
I sometimes see high level codys do ex rk and then dash twice and do a jump in, what is this exactly? an unblockable? a safejump set up?
Thanks for reading this and I hope you see more of me on theese forums XD.
1.lk ruffian can be made safe from the right distance. the rock puts them into block stun so they can’t use a move to beat your incoming ruffian or jump away.
in fact, you can make it +1 on block. I dunno if lp rock flies that far. think you might need to use mp.
2. there are plenty, but most resolve around ex ruffian tho. there is a generic one after a front throw however: “Hey! Let’s do this for real.” Concept/Discovery/Match-up Videos
3. it’s a character specific ambiguous crossup setup in the corner. j.hp will hit as cross up. there is a list somewhere around on whom it works. for starters: ryu.
So what ultra do you pick in general with Cody? I like Ultra 2 because of meterless set ups and anti projectile, but I’ve seen some really good players pick ultra 1 ( regardless ) I feel like it scales a too much and FADC is not as rewarding because Cody does not really have good reversals sept’ for Ex zonk but thats 3 bars
The j.hp hits in the front, but you look like you crossed up (and you land on the other side). You use mk if they’re aware of the setup and block non-crossup.
It’s also an unblockable on some characters (Dhalsim and Yun I think).
