Well that list was more about champs that can handle a solo lane. With tf you want him to get level 6 quick so top or mid is good for him.

Of course some champs can handle a solo lane easier than others. Generally you want someone with good mobility mid who can handle it so they can push the lane, then head top or bottom to gank and then return. Not only does the champ need to be able to hold his own, the player needs to be careful because of the possibility of a gank coming from the top and bottom.

Xin is also a good solo lane champ. He has a weak jungle If he gets countered in any way, but if he is left alone he has very strong ganks.

Maokai needs a solo lane to be anything more than a root with a reverse Vlad ult. Putting Maokai bot is a waste. At that point might as well use a real tank who can actually duo. The only thing Maokai does better than other similar champions is farm and harass in a solo lane, along with bringing a good amount of damage to a teamfight (assuming he gets farm), so if you are going to use him you might as well make the most of it.

Maokai is really item dependent, he has good base armor but shit health and no MR per level (lol). That means he can’t duo well, and his jungle is pretty slow, as I recall. Putting Maokai top or mid is not that different than doing it with any other Tanky DPS type of character, which people do all the time.

Maokai is way too good at helping people net kills. I just don’t see him justified in a solo lane. He just helps WAY too much to justify sacrificing his duo potential just so he can get his farm on.

I hate the term ‘tank’ in this game. Like, honestly truly despise it.

What Maokai does better than other similar champions is having two forms of peel CC that are also two forms of chase CC. He protects carries and secures kills really well.

He also has his ult which is INCREDIBLE DAMAGE MITIGATION but retards don’t realize it because there’s no fancy big numbers showing up on their screen when he uses it.

Maokai does great as a solo because oh the high damage from his burst and ability to control the lane. Chu8 really unlocked the potential of him and if you haven’t had a chance to see his item build or try out triforce maokai I would suggest checking it out. I’ve played it a couple times and it truly is something else.

I’d say he’s situationally a good solo top. You can’t just pick him to go top every game and expect to do well, there’s a decent amount of people who can shut him down pretty hard(teemo comes to mind). But if it’s a matchup where they can’t really bully you out of getting last hits he’s a great solo, he can farm up his Q tremendously well, level advantage + farmed Q + gear is incredibly hard to deal with.

And you know what both those forms of CC require of Maokai? Melee range. The first puts him in melee range and the second has very low range. If you can’t farm as Maokai you go into melee range and melt, even with your ult up. Also, most similar champions have similar peels/chase, while being naturally sturdier. Yes his ult is good damage mitigation (basically reverse Vlad ult, as I said), but it’s also stationary and very hard to keep up without farm, since Maokai’s mana is also low normally. It also ends when you die, which without gold isn’t going to take that long.

The reason people use the term tank is because that’s bascially what they do. It’s not as simple as in an MMO, but tanks are supposed to run around taking random pokes here and there so the squishier characters don’t have to, and hopefully trying to peel people off squishies when they can. I don’t really know what else you would call ‘tanks’ that would describe their role as well. Not all tanks are initiators and not all initiators are tanks, so that doesn’t work. “Big beefy guys?” Is that better.

What is his duo lane potential, and what do you sacrifice for it? He’s not Janna/Soraka/Taric/Sona. He needs real items to be effective. His CC takes him into melee range, and if you don’t have some real items most teams will kill you on accident with AoE. So his duo lane potential is a good snare and a decent slow if you level them or decent but expensive harass if you level sapling. The other part of his duo lane potential is taking half the farm, which is not what you really want in a duo lane. There’s a reason why basically every team runs support on bottom. Instead of having two underfarmed characters you have a support that doesn’t need it much and someone else who gets solo lane farm. Maokai doesn’t realistically fit into that model. He can roam, sure, but that’s a risky strategy that relies more on your opponents’ stupidity than your own skill. And if he fails roaming he is stuck in a bad spot. You could stick him in a duo lane with a support and let him farm, which would work okay, but Maokai really digs on the level advantage he can get in a solo lane

You know what he can do in a solo lane? Beat almost any caster in lane (or really anyone who relies on abilities for harass or last-hitting), even if they try to play passively, and farm like a motherfucker, showing up to teamfights with real health and real damage. He still has those two CCs you were raving about, but now they do real damage. Maokai is good for his AoE damage burst and single target control/burst. His ult is good damage mitigation, but it also does a ton of damage in a big area, and it makes sense to maximize that.
