i dont play laura, but please please i need you guys to help me fight her. what the hell do i do against a patient laura who knows what buttons to press and can play a calculated offense game? i literally have no clue what to do when she gets inside. palso, layers with good defense are super hard to open up in general, which makes fighting this mu that much more difficult. i can only win by playing gimmicky and relying on turn steal bs tactics. i would really appreciate you guys telling me what im not doing. thanks a lot in advance.
First off, I hate fighting Karins because I feel like it’s one of Laura’s worst match ups so I’m reluctant to give you advice LOL. With that out of the way, there’s something I noticed about your gameplay. You didn’t really challenge her pressure with reversal EX ressenhas when she’s pressing buttons in front of your face, none of those strings are true block strings so if you wanted to, you could have mashed out. It is not an option you want to use all the time but one time here and there to put the fear in her is important so she doesn’t just get to do things for free. Instead, you did a lot of your EX ressenhas when you think she was going to press a button when it was her “turn” which is a huge risk to take.
Another thing is that when you get hit by LP bolt, you press buttons - NEVER press buttons after you get hit by it because you won’t win (unless it’s invincible), you were eating counter hit combos constantly. When you get hit by LP bolt, you have to guess, either jump, backdash or block, don’t press buttons unless you’re going to EX ressenha - she is +2 so most buttons she press will counter hit you, if you attempt to jump, the hit will probably hit you but at least you won’t eat a counter hit combo.
Save your meter where you can, she was jumping in on you for free. Karin’s anti air normals aren’t the greatest so unless you can reliably anti air with her normals, save some meter for EX ressenha so she doesn’t get a free jump in. You spent a lot of meter trying to get in or getting some extra damage in the corner when I don’t think it’s worth it, not against Laura anyway because the moment she gets in, she can end the round. If you need to, with all the unspent meter that you saved for EX ressenha, if you land that combo, use it on the super to end the round.
You did a lot of random ressenhas from full screen and it’s very predictable because that’s her only “in” at that range. If you want to punish Laura’s fireball, you can ressenha on reaction, her fireball is actually very slow and reactable. You kind of lucked out there though because she didn’t punish you for it but it’s not a risk Karin should have to take. Karin has a great walk speed, just take advantage of it and walk Laura into the corner - if Laura throws a fireball trying to keep you back, ressenha to get in. Laura’s 5HK is -4 on block, once you block it, you can harass with 5MK if you want to.
Use 5MK more, it’s Laura’s worst nightmare. Use it at that mid-range when you’re somewhat close, not max range. If you attempt it at max range, you’ll more than likely eat 5HK from Laura which happened several times. Laura takes a huge risk throwing out 5HK at that range as well because it’s very slow to recover so if you guess right, and you jump at her, she’s likely going to eat that combo but jump at your own discretion. Use 5LK more too when you’re in her face - Laura doesn’t have a wake up (EX elbow doesn’t get armor till 3f) so you can abuse the button against her to either bait throws or go in for the throw yourself.
You have to be more careful pressing buttons on your wake up, you were eating far too many meaties and counter hits on wake up. If you’re expecting a grab, just go for a jump instead, again, it’s better than eating a counter hit combo, not to mention you’ll get a fat punish if you guess the command grab correctly.
Lastly, if he’s playing patient, so can you. Karin’s normals generally dominate Laura at that mid-range because of Karin’s 5MK and 2MK. If she’s willing to just downback, she’s taking gray life so she’ll have to give eventually. Also, I noticed a lack of overheads when she was just downbacking in the corner, again, throw some fear into her, that way she has to worry about blocking high as well as low. I’ve tried fighting my way out of the corner with Laura and her best option there is to do a EX elbow and hope you’re not blocking - if you block it, you get a free punish.
Hopefully that’s some advice that you can put to use. Again, I hate myself for telling a Karin how to beat Laura because I feel like Laura already has a huge problem against Karin. Granted though, that Laura is pretty darn good and learned how to take advantage of your lack of knowledge against her.
thanks a lot! i was going to go into training and find out how to deal with the different blockstrings, but thanks to you im going to use your text as basis and train for a couple of block string scenarios.
i normally dont press any buttons when its someone else’s turn, but laura can whip out a dash command throw after any normal and can do that fireball move. so on her offence, i dont really know what to do and guess exactly wrong and start panicking.
also, hp ressenha after a throw is a meaty setup which is not punishable, but since i was pretty flustered playing this guy, i tried doing gimmicky followups out of desperation.
Another thing I forgot to mention is EX fireball is +3 on block so it generally isn’t a good idea to challenge it. The regular fireball done point blank is -5 so you can potentially get a big punish.
I have a question regarding normal fireballs… They’re -5 point blank but spaced properly what happens to the frame advantage/disadvantage? For example, I see Dashio cancel into them at a range where he can still follow them in, making Laura look plus.
Laura is plus because she can cause a true block string if it’s blocked depending on the spacing. However, you have to keep in mind that it’s not safe for Laura to be doing that, if someone sticks out a button before, during or even possibly after (depends on the button) the fireball, it will hit Laura out of it. So she deserves the plus frames if she’s allowed to complete the fireball.
Perhaps this has already been discussed but how much stronger does Laura get in V-Trigger? I’ve been feeling like it’s worth it to activate, not ASAP necessarily, but shortly after you acquire the meter. Rather than waiting to combo or cancel a normal on block into it, I’ve been using it to pause the game when I feel like the opponent is about to do something. I digress… It seems to me, not having done any research on it, that she gets a lot better. bolt charge getting a hit box buff, faster claps, faster VDF, more damage… Activating early seems like a strong strat to me, even if you do lose VR (which admittedly sucks in some MU’s.)
Side questions: how useful is her j.lk? Obviously it’s not as good as Ryu’s but is it worth using?
People use it to get stronger? I think its either best for continuing a combo or to get that stupid speed boost. Dhalism tends to be a huge problem for me without it. I need the v-trigger when he’s spamming his arc fireballs to close in the distance fast.
And her j.lk is pretty damn useful. I’ve been able to cross up with it and I believe you can follow it up.
You’d be hard pressed to find a SF female outside of Makoto who isn’t obviously sexualized. Kinda comes with the territory with these games. I’m just numb to it I guess.
I mean Cammy wears a leotard and has a alt wearing a coat, shirt, and tie with just panties lmao. It doesn’t bother me though with Laura or any of the female cast. This isn’t DOA level of sexualized.
I think the real difference between SF and DoA when it comes to it’s fan service is the way they are marketed. The male characters are very much the main marketed icons of the SF franchise. Ryu and Ken are the main faces of SF. Where as in DoA, the female cast are used for advertising way more. It’s so bad that people forget DoA even has a pretty sizable male cast, lol.
While yeah, she was designed to be, the fact that Laura is proud and open about her sexuality is actually refreshing. She knows she’s sexy and she carries it. She’s probably the most confident Street Fighter character.
From what I’ve seen in my prima guide of the original ideas they had for Laura, she’s actually a lot more conservative then originally planned. For whatever reason they seemed to be very intent on making her a sexualy themed character based on all of her early sketches, but one of her early concepts that it looks like at one point they were really legitimately considering was that she wore nothing but belts or bandages wrapped around the “key” areas of her body, and that all her attacks involved her removing said belts or bandages and using them as a part of the attack, with a note stating that the more powerful attacks would exposure her the most (kind of reminded me of bayonetta actually). The laura we got may not be wearing much, but at least she keeps it on.
I was also surprised her opening was not censored, it honestly always felt way more sexual then Cammys which was censored (do upskirts actually matter when the person isn’t wearing a skirt?). I never even considered that Cammy’s intro could be viewed as offensive until it was pointed out to my why it was censored, but it still felt more like the sort of thing you really had to be looking for, otherwise the camera angle just made sense because of the fact that Cammy was descending from the sky so you would want the camera positioned upward, while Lauras is very much in your face about the intent of the intro, with an intro that makes a point of stopping at both her T and A while Laura seems to purposely gyrate the focused area into the camera. All that still wouldn’t be that bad if it wasn’t for the super low cut top and the almost comically over the top and extremely non-sensical butt window on the back of her pants. Not that cammy’s thong ever made any sense either…
Anyway, I’m a hypocrite in that I also was offended by Laura’s over the top sexualization (especially her story costume)… and yet… if I’m being really honest… one of my favorite things about her is her appearance and attitude. Regardless of the fact she was clearly designed to titillate, I still find her appearance really cool, and I appreciate the fact that she owns it and seems to have a personality that I could believe would dress that way, unlike characters like Cammy who I simply can’t figure out how her personality would lead her to choosing a high cut thong leotard as her battle outfit, even if she truly felt a leotard would in some way aid her fighting ability. The best I’ve been able to come up with is that its a remnant of the mind control from when she was killer bee that made her want to show off her back side (presumably for Bison’s enjoyment), but there’s never really been any indication she still retains any residual anything from that time so its a head canon at best. If you’re going to make your character dress like a tart, at least give a plausible reason why they would be doing so. But I’m DEFINITELY thinking about this too much.
I don’t pay much attention maybe but I haven’t really noticed what her personality is like other than DING DING I TOOK THIS ROUND which is obviously repulsive. Also I’m still not fan of her braids, in game. In other art is looks fine but IDK I don’t like it in game. I don’t like how her alternate colors change her lipstick, too. Usually it looks bad IMO.
All that said, I love her gameplay. I stated this already but it feels very natural to me which is awesome. Love getting the dizzy and going for a big stun combo. Super fulfilling.
Is it just me or is shimmy-ing with her difficult? Any tips?
