Great, just great. So I’ve managed to get myself in trouble right? Let me explain what is going on. My job doesn’t really require me to be at my desk. But even if there is not work to be done, you still get paid so you still have to be there. I’m sure you military members can relate to this and I can say that this all so applies to the civillian world. I’ve been here for about 6 months and I’ve been doing a pretty good job. I know this because my boss says so. But now I’m in the midst of getting written up. 2 weeks ago, I came into work about 5 min. late. This basically happend because I was dragging ass when I got up. I was told about it and it ended up being no biggy, or so I thought. The next week, my alarm clock doesn’t go off and I end up being 30 min. late to work. When I woke up, I gave my boss a courtesy call to let him know what happend. Now normally, I’m usually about 15min early to work everymorning. Not only that, but I usually stay an hour or 2 late after work everyday to make sure shit gets done. But back to the first oversleep alarm clock not going of thing. I come into work, we discuss it and then I get an LOC (Letter of Counseling) he tells me that if this doesn’t happen again, for about 3 months, he’ll throw that one out. It was my second offense for being late so it was kind of understandable. Even though I feel that my clock not working wasn’t my fault, I was still held accountable.
Well Late nighters, it happend again today. My clock didn’t go off and I ended up being what would have been like an hour late to work. I have to be to work for 7am and it was 7:45am when I woke up. So I gave my boss the courtesy call so he would at least no what was going on. I had an 8:30am dental appointment, so he said just go ahead to that and then come into work. So I know that an LOR (Letter of Reprimand) which is worse is coming. I have an EPR (Enlisted Perfomance Report) coming up and if he decides to give me an LOR. It could adversly effect my grade and I’ll loose points towards performance. We haven’t discussed it yet because I’m sure he’s going to wait until the end of the day to talk to me about it. But do you all think that he’s being fair and doing the right thing? It’s not like I’m being late just for the sake of it. He did advise that I should get two clocks because that’s what he does, but I’ve never had to deal with this before, so I didn’t think it was necessary. So I do believe that I’m going to go out and buy another clock.
Also, apon further inspection of my current clock. It turns out that the batteries are low. Because the light barely works and the numbers are starting to fade. So I’m going to buy another clock and replace the batteries in that one. I’m also going to have him to give me a wake up call at 6am (that’s when I get up) since he claims that he’s up at 4am. This will solve all of my problems. But yeah, I really feel he should let me off for this one. But he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. Funny thing is, when I do come into work. I end up doing nothing for the first 2 hours but checking my e-mail and general all around bullshitting. Oh well.

I remember those days. my honest opinion is that yeah, he’s gotta do something. it ain’t right, it ain’t fair, but it has to be done. You know you didn’t do it on purpose, he probably knows it as well. however, if he doesn’t do anything about it, then other people will start doing it on purpose. It was the same thing when I was in. I ended up doing the two clock thing as well. I got one that ran soley on batteries to help avoid the problem of losing the clock when the power goes out. I hope they don’t come down too hard on you though.

I personally don’t think that it’s a big deal if a guy stuck in traffic can’t make it to his desk at or before 7:30 on the dot. I mean shit we’re all human and little mistakes like a slept-on alarm clock happens. LOCs and LORs are serious business that can fuck up a person’s EPR and consequently that person’s career options. If I’m on the verge of writing a Letter of Bad News I would make sure the subordinate knows what’s coming to him before I’m obligated to take the next step. So if I thought you were a solid worker that gave a shit about your job, you’d get counseled and I’d write a memo for record, letting you know that the paper trail has begun and the next step is LOCs and LORs.
But I do know that being late is a hot-button topic for some supervisors and upper management, and nobody is obligated to be lenient or charitable. At Yokota I was like 5 minutes late all the time and upper management grilled the fuck outta me nonstop. I caught a lot of LOCs, thankfully no LORs though. My supervisors were on some Darwin shit, REFUSING to offer any help like wake-up calls or whatever. I didn’t even get a stupid samurai sword or haiku or whatever they give for PCS gifts, because nobody in management respected me when it was time for me to go. It was some bullshit but I learned that being late isn’t something that everyone takes lightly (to compare, where I work now, if I’m late a couple minutes or I have to run right back home to pick something up, none of my supervisors give a shit). It depends on where you work and who you work for, but you have to step your be-on-time game up, because you never know who’s watching, and it gets uglier the longer it goes on.
My advice? BUY A TIMEX. Those alarm clocks are reliable as all I dunno what. I put a pair of batteries in my Timex backup alarm clock BACK IN 2000, and that bitch is working right now on that same pair of batteries. It’s also good to have a backup alarm if there’s a power outage in your house or something.

Well late nighters, I’ve got a 2nd alarm clock and I replaced the batteries in my old one and everything is ok. My super and I talked about the elephant in the living room and he isn’t going to take action. The only thing that pissed him off is that he gave me advice and I was to proud to take it. Other than that, it’s all good, but no more. So, I’ve got 2 clocks and a fucking wake up call. There is no way in hell that I should be late ever again unless it’s something substantial. However, since I’m obligated to be to work early or on time, then I plan to leave at 4:30pm like I’m supposed to.
I do know that all supers are differnet, I was at one base where I was garunteed to be at least 10 min late. But because I did good work and stayed late as well as a lot of other extra shit. It didn’t matter. I guess since there isn’t much for me to do here, they have to find something else to look at, because you best believe that I’ve got my work performance on lock.
