Lack Of Competition - The Fighting Game Killer

I live in a huge city, it has 2 arcades, but no fighters, 1 3token T5, and a broken MVC1.

With things like The Louisiana Boardwalk and all these colleges and the biggest AFB in the USA, you would think there would be comp SOMEWHERE.

I’m trying to start a little scene, the closest real comp I would have would be Dallas or Baton Rouge, Dallas being 3 hours away.

I still play fighters every day.

I can agree with that. I strongly dislike it being singled out because I don’t know all the technicalities of a game. No I don’t know anything about roll-cancel that, pressure this, recovery time that…Faust dusted me with a baseball bat. Yadda yadda yadda. :looney:

There are a handful of good 3s players in the Monroe area, but I moved. I don’t know how you could get in contact with them. We all just played the console releases though. I doubt the Tilt in the mall would get any new fighting game machines.

Sighs it’s true…

My Sister and myself started playing competitively or “seriously” about 6 or 7 years ago, (at home for about a year or 2) and back then, I guess the comp as “okay” over here.

Around the time when CvS1 and MvC2 came out, our 2 main arcades (still very small, though) were pretty packed most of the time, so there was a fair amount of competition for the next 2 years or so. Everyone’s main games were XMvSF, MvC1, CvS1 and MvC2…But eventually, they got tired and stopped playing MvC1, CvS1 and XMvSF. It’s also sad that CvS2 never had a chance. It arrived at our 2nd main arcade ONE YEAR after it was released everywhere else, then 2 months later, it was shipped to another state. So yeah, MvC2 was everyone’s main competitive fighting game. I’ll never forget how hateful and sexist those guys were, and over a video game, too…Unfotunately, No one’s skills surpassed that of an average scrub’s or difficulty-8 computer…The comp for most games died fairly quickly; I
guess because no one had a clue of getting better at MvC2 and they were tired of getting raped by a couple of scrubs…Seriously, those guys really got mad.

The only things they were able to do is air combo, (4-5 hit) sweepXXsuper, Assist XX air combo, Cammy Air ComboXXSuper, 3-hit ground combos and more random scrub tactics. By the way, the tiers were…

Top Tier:
Guile
Mags (Air Combo and SweepXXMagnetic Shockwave ONLY)
Akuma
Cammy (Air Combo only)

2nd Tier:
Psylocke (On point)
Ryu
Ken
BB Hood

3rd Tier:
Charlie
Iron Man (ONLY for his super)
Jin
Hayato (SP?)

So…2 years ago, the comp completely died; not only for MvC2, but for every other fighting game as well. GGXX was here for a month or so, but it too was shipped to
somewhere else. Our largest arcade went out of business 6 months ago and MvC2 has been removed from the other one-- after being there for over 5 years.

I really do wish these guys were better players so the comp could’ve continued
and maybe we would’ve had tournaments-- if the scene became strong enough. Sure, the arcades often got rid of the games, but maybe we could’ve had console tournaments at eachother’s houses or something.

So yeah, I was pretty hardcore, but no comp killed my spirit.

i live in a city where the only 2d games are ggxx2 yes xx not #r cvsONE and one marvel cab but no one of any skill plays it hell I can beat anyone tht plays it and i know like 5 combos total

i play with 2 people regularly and i’m happy for those 2 people i wouldn’t say no comp kills it completely

one of my friends i play with plays #reload there is NO ONE in the state that can hang with him even when hes just bullshitting no one can play with him here yet hes good he can go to other tourneys get wins and stuff no comp didnt’ kill his dedication he just pratices by himself and saves to go to all these tourneys

no comp may be a factor in it but ultimately its your dedication to the game

my comp is pretty okay, we’re not amazing but we actually help eachother learn the game

The tilt did get new machines, a SVC (yeah right) and a T5, the “champ” still hangs out there, but he doesn’t play anymore, and I lived in monroe before I moved here, and I played MvC2 almost every weekend with at least a crowd of 8-10 people around the Marvel machine every friday, it went away after I moved I guess, that made me sad.

I drive 2 hours to work in monroe 3 days a week, and I hop in the arcade from time to time, but I never find anyone that plays, somtimes I find one match, once I found a guy I used to play alot in there complaining about all the lazy people that won’t come to the arcade to play marvel anymore, and I agreed with him.

If you think I might know any of those players, just ask if they played marvel in tilt (I was the only white boy that played).

how is the comp at university pinball btw? i was tehre a few times, but never played any1 good really to be honest…

I agree with this statement whole heartedly. When I had moved away from San Antonio for a year then came back, I found the scene dead, for Marvel anyhow. The two best players here didn’t play no more, and at my local arcade there was this fresh new crop of players who didn’t know so much about the game. So eventually I taught them about top tier, told them about SRK, and dowloaded and gave out vids of high level play. The talent increased like mad and one of the guys I helped teach whupped me in a tourney eventually.

Not that we’re some meccha of amazing gameplay, but the scene here is welcoming and we get new folks trying to play and improving cause we’re all cool about handing out advice. There was one dude who used to play who was very badass, but very condescending, no one liked playing him and he deterred folks from playing cause of his attitude. Hell I had played for like two or three years and would stop playing cause of his personality, I can imagine how newbies would feel

I don’t know where the wrong ends and the ignorance begins in that statement.

I never see you in GodWeapon or Anti3D. Did you change names or something?

And I’ll tell you what’s worse than having no competition, having no arcade. All 5 arcades where I live were shut down because of lack of interest. So I can’t even go to run off a few games of 3S VS the CPU anymore.

Ha, you too? LA sucks :frowning:

LA doesn’t suck, Baton Rouge/New Orleans has some really good players, and they at least post to keep their general discussion thread going in the regional section by posting in it.

I’ve never heard of the city you are from, Destrehan? I’m guessing it’s alot closer to BR than I am.

NJ area around me sucks for arcades. They opened up a new one not to long ago had a few fighters in it. THe next time I went back they took them all out and only had Tekken 5…

Seriously man, what do you play?

Louisiana is THE place to play Marvel, or at least it used to be. Home to vegita-x when he’s not pimping hos, magneto_x when he still stayed here (9th at Evo) and some other people. They used to get together a lot and just play nonstop in New Orleans, and we would hang out with the Baton Rouge people to play random stuff too, until Katrina more or less screwed us over. Now most of those players are scattered. I know not all the major players, but some of the minor ones that inhabited the arcade are around the state somewhere.

I myself play Guilty Gear, and used to play with the New Orleans people seriously until recently. Now I’m more or less a loner that plays, with the occasional plays in Baton Rouge, and whenever I travel out of state. Waiting on Slash. :frowning: I’m one of the players that play almost anything, minus Marvel, which is rare in this state.

New Orleans still has a 3rd Strike scene though, and they play constantly also. I missed a get together last night, in fact. >_>

Find somebody close to you who is interested, help them learn, and make them into a rival. All you need is one person who is of almost equal skill and you can really have a lot of fun. It’s not quite like the arcades, but it’s still good to have somebody who pushes you.
