LA KINA FAITE. A HUEVO
Is KOF13 popular down there? Are any of the newer games (tekken 6 or SF4 for instance) big down there? I just wonder, because all these new arcade boards cost a lot.
Are other neo-geo stuff big down there? Like Breakers Revenge or SamShodown.
I love hearing about the scenes in different countries.
Why does this post not have anymore likes.
This is so close to the truth, it’s impossible to explain.
this
and this
now let’s not forget that the game is fucking Godlike so it makes the perfect recipe for a successful community. Also in China is the same thing that’s why they are so good at the game too.
They do that with Korea too, May Lee was supposed to be a Korean Athena. (Namco also likes to do the ‘we represented your country!’)
I’m sorry but what does “Angel” even refer to?
I’m from the US but have been living in Mexico for many years.
While arcade machines are dying in the US, they are REALLY strong in Mexico. Plenty of people can’t buy consoles, so arcades are pretty popular. There is a big scene for games with an arcade release like KOF and MvC2.
Mexico has strong players, you don’t see them in the US playing in big tournaments due to money problems or legal status, but believe me, theory fighting gets flushed down the toilet once you hit the arcades in Mexico, players are MONSTERS and there’s plenty of them.
I hope that MvC3 gets an AE, once it does, Mexico will be the perfect place to train.
I don’t think so, at least in my area, the community is still the same.
KOF13 is pretty popular amongst console players. I’m safe saying that KOF 2002 has been the strongest game in mexican arcades for years. Marvel vs Capcom 2 takes second place.
SF4 (console) had a solid fanbase but MK9, MvC3 and KOF 13 are definitely the strongest games (in that order).
The Street Fighter series aren’t fast enough for arcade players in Mexico.
It does seem to largely come down to economics. KOF is very popular in Mexico, China and Pakistan.
There’s pretty much no reason for anywhere with a strong existing KOF scene to play KOF13. I don’t think anyone thinks that’s the best KOF game (though console version is a good game). For those who want a new KOF, 2002UM is superior. KOF13 just has traction in the USA because the country lacks KOF history and it looks pretty.
Isn’t Angel, the Angel in Mexico DF? Maybe there’s a popular arcade nearby? Dunno.
Neo-geo cabs are cheap and easily replaceable.
I remember there being multiple hacked versions of King of Fighters being available in Mexico, and due to the low cost of playing these games, could explain why they’re more popular than Capcom games right now over there.
Old KOFs = Poverty games.
Mexicans = Poor.
Do the math, doi.
I remember talking to my buddies from Mexico and how they moved up in Texas recently to get into boxing.
Basically, everyone has the same story:* boxing is really big in Mexico. It’s too bad there’s no boxing gyms.*
This was my experience when I lived in Mexico for 6 months. It reminded me of the pre-internet arcade scene in America when people learned by playing rather than dissecting Youtube videos, memorizing frame data and discussing strategy on message boards. There was a lot of raw talent on display.
Plus she is from Mexico
I remember when Ralf was brazilian and Clark was from Argentina.
Good times
You guys forgot the red headed chick(Vanessa)
Honestly, iunno how KOF got so crazy for mexico. But its just not mexicans good at it. They’re just the closest country to come rape the US. Brazil,Maxico, and certain parts of Asia(Korea, Taiwan) are really good as well. They never really played Asian countries yet, which is why I want to see Poongko enter KOF13 at EVO. Shit will hella get crazy.
However, I heard that around 01-02 there was a Japan vs Mexico and Japan flew out to Mexico and got assraped. I don’t have any proof, and it might only be a rumor. Not sure.
Nice thread :), The reason is the huge accessibility, you can still find arcades even on the most inaccessible towns, and the cabs are really cheap.
Every year had huge pre-release events for every KOF game on the most populated cities, the game started to get big when KOF 97 was released imo, the greatest thing about the KOF community in that time (in my personal experience) is the different mentality from a lot of players, there was a lot of bullshit in the game but a lot of people didn’t complain and they started to analize and train instead of bitching, in 97’ everyone was using orochi leona and orochi iori all the time but people didn’t complain, they started to talk about strategies in order to beat them and everyone wanted to have fun with their friends, after school the arcades were full of players and people had to wait sometimes a lot, specially when 30 + guys were playing on 3 different cabs all the time.
KOF 98 was the pinnacle of the series, the competition was really huge, everyone was playing: from 10 year old kids and even Fathers with their sons, the arcades were everywhere, why play on consoles when you can find competition everywhere near you?.
The game continued strong until the NESTS Saga (99. 00’ and 01’), a lot of players were interested on other things and people didn’t liked some of the new mechanics, SNK died, and piracy was incredibly strong and some dudes were playing on their modded dreamcast consoles with their friends. KOF 02’ attracted new people and a lot of veterans as well and the game is still played by thousands of people even today.
But KOF wasn’t the only popular arcade game in latin america, KI, UMK3 and the Capcom “versus” series were really strong, other SNK games had strong scenes as well in latin america: Kizuna Encounter, Last Blade, Rage of Dragons, FF Real Bout, Samsho and even Agressors of Dark Combat.
There is a lot of history about KOF in latin america but Hayama said it better:
Arcades are still strong in latin America, not as good as before but you can still find them.
Call it nostalgia, but those times were the best, people had a really strong competitive mentality and wanted to earn respect by playing well, learning was part of the fun, the environment was really cool and there was less people bitching, now on the internet/leaderboards/patching era everything is different
because we know better
Really? Kizuna Encounter is one of my favorite fighters of all time (top 10 in fact) and I’ve begged Ponder to add it to GGPO but every time I’m on Supercade I see next to no people playing it, sometimes a few Brazillians. I never knew it had any kind of scene in South America.
