It really surprised me when the KOF XIV PSX trailer had as many views as it did. I wonder what’s with this sudden interest in KOF given its decline in commercial appeal over the years.
The tier listing has very little to do with what we’re saying.
It’s the flaws in character and system design that’s the problem. The SNK characters feel devoid of their own feel because certain things were just left out, such as up to date move lists, certain move properties that were implemented to combat issues that certain characters have(such as autoguard), and ect, leading them to just feeling homogenized. It’s not a big problem to me anymore because I’ve accepted that Capcom couldn’t make the Capcom characters play different, so they toned down various aspects of the SNK side to make it more competitive. But at the same time, I completely understand the sentiment that CVS2 was a very lazy game in terms of making the two sides congruent.
The system/mechanics itself is the real problem. The Groove system was very lazy and biased if we look at it closely. Not only did the Capcom grooves have access to things that weren’t even in their flagship games(rolling), they completely diminish the intricacies of the the SNK game systems they based them on. A great example of this is the K-groove. Based MOSTLY(some of it was MOTW) on Samurai Spirits, it lacked any sort of dodging mechanic whatsoever. Any SS player can tell you that SS has had some sort of dodging mechanic since 2 iirc. It just seemed as if they didn’t take the time to truly look at how delicately made these subsystems were in their own environment, hence the “lazy” aspect.
The roster itself felt very political as well. Why would you purposely use outdated versions of characters for the SNK side while using mostly up to date versions of Capcom’s? Ryo is a good example of this. SNK had already re-established him as a bastion for the actual art of Kyokushin Karate by 96, but Capcom chose to illustrate him as the AOF/94 Ryo anyway, leading even new fans to say “Oh, he’s just a Ryu clone”. I find that very disrespectful in retrospect.
So when I see people say “We want CvS3, but we want Capcom to make it alone”, it’s like someone asking you to let someone else to borrow your personally handmade sword to use as a spear.
Yeah I’m still mad that Goodbye Esaka got the nod over Tears for XIII. I don’t mind Goodbye Esaka but it still rustled my jimmies and made me saltier than a fast food chain’s french fries.
Well voice actors are treated like VIPs in Japan get paid stupid amounts of money. So merchandising is where it’s at. Which is why most animes have some stupid mascot character.
Hell the studio that did the animation for Samurai Champloo just went out of business
I always hated how ryo was treated in CVS2. Additionally the remaining KOF characters were clearly based off their early iterations which made no sense given the game was released 2001. Also why bother including grooves that didn’t even play like the original. I mean why would C-groove have rolls it made no sense.
What? Where did you ever get the idea that Geese is Terry’s father?
Also Rock is already confirmed to be Geese’s son, there’s no question about it.
As for if SNKP’s IPs were to be adapted into various media, it should retool the original timelines so that the characters can all be together, much as the KOF games did to FF and AoF’s timelines. If not, then you run into the issue of Ryo being significantly older than Terry. Also, FF should definitely be first since Terry’s probably the most well-known SNK character.
My bad I meant terry and Andy. Well a few things give that impression, terry and Andy are adopted and Andy happens to look identical to young geese to the point that you would think they are the same character. Also geese asked terry to take care of rock which doesn’t make sense given they were enemies. He would only ask him if there was some kind of connection and obviously it’s that it’s his younger brother. It would make sense and I personally think make the story more dramatic and intense. The fact that terry and andy never had their biological parents revealed is quite telling and I think bad SNK continued fatal fury games would eventually confirm geese is their dad.
Being console exclusive helps. And that competitive fighters are gaining appeal to the mass public, with KoF being a respected franchise in that regard at least.
In the Fatal Fury timeline, after Terry kills Geese (which was an act of revenge after Geese killed Terry and Andy’s father Jeff Bogard), he saw that Geese had a son and decided to take it upon himself to raise the boy since he orphaned the kid. In the KoF timeline, Geese never dies and I have no idea what the fuck happened with Rock because I don’t think they’ve ever outright explained what the deal is.
If C-Groove didn’t have rolls, then it wouldn’t have roll cancels and CvS2 wouldn’t have been CvS2. At the end of the day, it’s its own thing and there are people who love it because it’s CvS2, with all its glitches and idiosyncrasies, not a new Alpha with SNK characters or KoF with Capcom characters. People should just let it be and stick to talking about KoFXIV.
I read a plot guide years ago and it looks like that bit about geese asking terry never happened. Well at any rate I’m fairly certain real bout happened roughly around the K saga given how south town 2 was a thing in garou and because rock is in K era victory pose for terry as kid.
Unless something changed in the recent years, you only get paid a ton as a voice actor if you’re a really big name. And I mean REALLY big. Take your top 10, and then put another batch on top of them big. I’ve heard more stories for how bad the work and pay is for both animators and voice actors in Japan than how great it is. Voice actors working extra jobs to keep their lights on, animators not being allowed to leave for sometimes weeks due to deadlines, etc.
Yeah I mean all of those characters still exist and all that, the thing is though that the KoF timeline and the Fatal Fury timeline are completely different and events did not happen the same way. I know what happened in FF as far as Rock is concerned, but in KoF I have NO idea why Rock is with Terry since Geese is still alive and Terry has no personal responsibility to take care of him. And like I said, I don’t know if it was ever explained or if it’s just in there as a nod to FF.
What if Geese didn’t die and just didn’t give a fuck about Terry taking care of his son? Or what if the timeline changes so he dies later on before Garou?
