No, I doubt it. He might be a setup for something bigger though.
The âOfficial Invitationâ Team seems to have a theme built around previous KOF villains. Sylvie was a member of NESTS, the hooded guy looks like a member of Those From the Past, and the Bian Lian girl might be another member of the Hizoku. The leaked picture gives the impression that Sylvie is the captain, but who knows how their story will play out.
Ideally, if the characters turn out to be well-received they can be spun off into other teams in KOF XV. You know a Hizoku Team and a team of ex-NEST members who did not join with Kâ, and a Those From the Past team where Shroom and Rimelo are finally playable. Just an idea on my part.
And hello everybody. Long time reader and SNK fan, first time poster. Seems like this game is bringing a lot of us to this board.
I didnât even notice that there are no black people until you pointed so out. But do I find it disturbing? No, not really. I donât think there were any black people in KoF 13. I donât think there were any in 11(unless Duck King is black. I always thought he was just tan like Kâ) or '03. So didnât really strike me as important
My criteria for black people in Japanese games are as follows:
They canât have weirdly colored hair (Seth, Foxy, Elena, Duck maybe), because too many âblackâ characters in Japanese stuff have it, and itâs generally an excuse to make them look less black.
They canât be half-Japanese. Sean, this means you.
They canât be a stereotype. Honestly this one doesnât even matter because all fighting games revolve around stereotypes (not really in a bad way either), but itâs cool when thereâs a black character who doesnât do something stereotypically black.
KOF is pretty good in that regard, even though the only two âtrueâ black characters are named after a rapper and a basketball player, respectively. But hey, it was 1994, and theyâre pretty ballinâ anyway [details=Spoiler]And weâll never see them again :([/details]
But whatever, I never really cared for representation of brazilians in fighting games, Richard Meyer, Bob Wilson, Butt/Marco Rodriguez, Pupa and this new Brazilian Ninja are nice and all but I wonât change my mains just because of their nationality or skin color. As for Capcom, Laura is interesting but I donât really care for Sean and just despise Blanka. I know the latter might not even be brazilian but I donât like his playstyle(fuck Bao), his concept and being the âbrazilian stereotypeâ in SFII didnât help him. At least the ones that donât use capoeira like Laura, Marco, and this new ninja guy are at least different.
Also, Sean and Laura are only a quarter japanese. Theyâre more âbrazilianâ than Ken is âamericanâ. The Matsudas are basically the Gracies.
Sadly I notice that in all games I play. But I dont mind. They have made cool black characters and I hope they make some new ones. But I was more worried about the characters I liked making it in and so far so good
Well Sean is Brazilian and I recently learned that they had more slaves that the US back in the day which is why so many of the people there look black, its actual ancestry.
As for no stereotypes, sadly Japanese people know little about blacks. I live in Japan and its amazing to see the things they know. Most of their knowledge comes from movies and we are usually casted as ghetto or unintelligent (but I have noticed things have been changing) Sadly the movie that do show us in a good light dont really make it here. Only movies I saw with a black lead was Creed and Star Wars (both were good by the way)
I like how Ryo and Robert are matching their fireballs to each others outfits in this game. They seem like a much happier couple than Kyo and Iori. lol.
Look carefully under the area where Ryoâs lower arm is positioned. It took me a moment to spot it, but it looks like a pair of legs. However it might just be part of the afterglow of the Haou Shoukou Ken.
Even as a black male myself, it doesnât disturb me, but itâs not my personal pref. I donât really feel Japan sees much Black, African, Afro-Brazilian, Latino, etc. âAmbiguous Brown Characterâ basically fills a few varieties for them. Iâm happy to see theyâre expanding their varieties much more in this game than normal.
I mostly get annoyed by seeing the same comedy / idiot violent guy stereotypes constantly reused, more than a lack of characters, personally. Even if Seth is a bit boring, I think heâs a more interesting, stoic style type than a Balrog, who is every low-intelligence, money-hungry-because-once-poor black guy ever.
I also have no problem with the American Sports team. Around the time they premiered, I couldnât talk to another black person about games without them either mentioning Madden or NBA. It was the white guys who played games of other types, but black folks either played sports IRL, or in games, and that was kinda it. So I loved having a team that offered something of a cross-over between interest.
I think SNK does a fairly good job with representing different races. Iâm not the type to be easily offended by fictional material but I do like how Hispanics are represented in KOF games being that Iâm latin myself.
I find it more disturbing you even notice thereâs no black characterâs in the game and feel the need to bring it up which would lead me to believe you would want to shoehorn one into the game just for the sake of having one
Smells of tokenism to me monkey66
I just want good well designed characters i really could less what color there skin is or what part of the planet they are from, if they are even from this planet at all!
Thereâs a reason why they (along with Brian) have only been playable in one mainline KOF game ('94) & one dream match game ('98/'98: UM) & as to why theyâve been reduced to being joke characters/background, cameo charactersâŚ& I donât think itâs because theyâre black (except of course, Brian).
Heck, Heavy D being replaced by Nelson says it all.
