All I want is a solid Mai at the least, something like KOF98og or something.
a strong Ryuuenbu (qcb+p) that can’t be hopped on either version
solid poke checks with Far A and Far B
solid air-to-air normals with air throw OS and okay air to ground properties (mainly being j.C and j.D)
would like her to keep dp+K as an anti-air option (helped in match ups such as against Chris)
an okay projectile (recovery was much better in 2002/2002um)
I don’t really want much from Mai, but XIII Mai didn’t really deliver on the strong Ryuuenbu part in terms of range and height. It still caught most hoppers, but just the range of space and the speed it had in 98 trumps it. I guess it’ll be cool to have her j.2A for back dash cancels and such like in 98/02. I don’t really care much for the dive butt/knee gimmicks though. 02um Mai is also really solid for similar reasons as the above list, just missing a dp+K that she doesn’t necessarily need.
-Kachou Sen (EX version: Multiple fans, like her DM in KOF)
-Ryu En Bu (EX version: second flame with like in MI2 that makes juggle like in KOF XIII)
-Hisatsu Shinobi Bachi (Ex version: does more hits, more damage and is faster and goes through in guard. Like Spiral Arrow EX of Cammy)
-Musasabi no Mai/Kuuchuu Musasabi no Mai (let’s hope it will be better than in XIII) (EX version similar to Hisatsu)
new moves:
-Kagerou no Mai (fire hurricane column, used to end combos or antiair) (EX version: Mutliple hits, juggle to combo)
-Hakuro no Mai (fans dance she had in KOF’97) (EX version, ended like Mai’s rekkas in Real Bout)
DMs:
-Chou Hisatsu Shinobi Bachi (SDM version: Real Bout version)
-Hana Arashi (EX version: Wild Ambition version)
Climax
-Shiranui Ryuu Kunoichi no Mai (XIII Neomax)
God I would love for intros to come back. It was one of the things I thought KOF had over SF, nice little omake to fans and for the story. Please let this and color edit come back
Well it is frustrating when you really want to get good at something but you are still not at the level you want to be, i think everyone feel the same way but directing your stress on the game won’t give any benefit to you at all. The only advice i can give to you is practice hard & seek out help from pro players at threads like these on the areas you are bad at.
I feel like ever since the PSX trailer I’ve slowly becoming a bigger fan of KoF than SF. Mainly because there is a lot of thing KoF does better imo. Better characters. Chang, Seth, Bao, Momoko, Maylee and Yuri are the KoF characters I dislike. Everybody else I like or am indifferent to. A much smaller list compared to SF’s Blanka, Dhalsim, Sodom, Ingrid, Claw, Hakan, El Fuerte, Ibuki, Twelve, and Adon. Not to mention there are only about 15 SF characters I actually like.
Also KoF has a much greater story. A great testament to this is that is that Ryu almost always has absolutely nothing to do with the plot, most characters have nothing to do with the plot, and don’t really have any real motivation besides, “I’m gonna join a tournament because why not”. Whereas in KoF even minor teams like AoF team, Women fighters team, and the pscho soldiers team have some sub plots and motivations that make their story a bit more interesting.
And lastly ever evolving characters. SFV is really the first time Capcom has decided to try to mix it up with their characters, while KoF has always been tweaking and editing characters move sets and looks. Kyo graduates high school and then stops wearing a school uniform. Sakura graduates high school, sailor uniform all day everyday.
Im there with you man, I became a fan of KOF back in the day because of their supers and characters from other games. SF is fun but has got a bit too corporate for me. They dont take chances as much as they should and are all about selling DLC in some sort of way. I like that KOF isnt as racist either. I look at balrog, DJ, Fuerte and more and I shake my head. Sure KOFs USA team was a boxer, BBall player, and football guy but they still had good designs.
But even though Im a giant fan I do have to admit KOF has made some bad games in the past. 12 was horrible but thanks to their trial and error we got 13 which I fucking love. But yea Im hella hyped for 14
The dull color scheme is because devs wanted to do cinema style color filters and color grading as well. Hollywood learned long ago that they could use these to affect the mood and tone of their film and, of coursr, game devs copied it.
I agree. Neither KOF XII or KOF XIII had them because SNK Playmore spent so much more time on those overrated, 2D 480p hand-drawn, pixelated graphics for the characters.
By going 3D, KOF XIV seems to be looking like a return to the old, glory days in both gameplay & special features like special intros (as well as with most of the original SNK staff doing modt of the job with this game), which I’m happy about.
You can’t entirely blame the lack of intros and extra animations on the “Overrated Sprites”; Even the 3D games that come out now-a-days skimp on things like unique intros and win animations for characters. Even though you could have such things by re-using taunt animations and recording a few new voice lines.
And even with those expensive sprites, SNKP still found a way to include a bunch of extraneous things (The crazy frame-for-frame startup for Ryo’s Neomax, Taunt animations for each character, a few special Win-with-Neomax Victory poses, Clothes rip for blown-away and collapse for Yuri and King, a frame for each of Athena’s Costumes leading up to XIII during her Neomax + Random ending animations, Mask / No Mask for Raiden, Differnet length shorts and alt hairstyle for Yuri, unique dizzy and spin-out animations, Unique frames in the color edit room that enabled people to see special angles for ease of coloring, the list goes on and on.)
A thing to keep in mind about all the intros to KoF, is that a LOT of them were re-used animations from older games (look at how often Terry and Mary share animations from their 97-on intros), and that making new intros was commonly something done to refresh characters that retained most of the same frames for YEARS and YEARS of being in the game.
A return of such things is because SNKP actually sees these details as worth working towards. It’s great to see their re-formed team (and the new people along with it!) actually have a passion for crazy, fun details.
Glad to see special intros are back. That Billy bow is similar to the intro he had in Real Bout, where he’d say something respectful to Geese (can’t remember exactly what he said) in Japanese.
About Mai’s ‘bodysuit’, there’s one time I read a game strategy magazine ages ago and they had a character by character ‘breakdown’ for KOF99. They had Mai in her official illustration, but covered from neck to toe in like a pitch black wetsuit. They didn’t even do any respectable photoshop, just flat out painted over her with a black brush. Freaking hilarious.
Long time lurker here (since page one) and thought I would sign up to join in the (sometimes) fun. I am glad special intros are back, as they add something fun and extra to the game.
Been watching intros. Many are just the same. I like’d a lot KoF XIII intro chats. Weren’t fun with characters like Kyo, Iory, K’ or alikes, but lots of fun with Billy Kane, Terry, May or Juri. I love trashtalkers.
