KOF XIV General Discussion - King of Fighters XIV Arcade Ver. Burn 2 Fight cabinets from Taito!

Nope, no one is saying they are an expert on animation. But it doesn’t take an expert to point out what looks glaringly obvious. I don’t need to be Michael Jordan to know when Lebron James had a horrible game, know what I’m saying? I like KoF. Considering what we had with KoF13, “good enough” is not good enough, especially from what I’ve seen from trailers and gameplay videos. At this point, I’m willing to to chalk up that the game LOOKS bad. Now if I can get my hands on it to play it, then maybe I can put the last gen graphics aside and accept it for what it is, a good game at the end of the day.

Maybe I’m just blinded by hype at this point because I don’t think it looks bad at all anymore. I’ve watched the latest trailer more times than I can count, I’ve watched comparison videos, I’ve watched the trailer in slow motion, I’ve watched the trailer and then played SFV for comparison, and the only complaints I’ve found were the art direction for a couple of characters(I don’t like Kyo and Maxima’s redesigns, and while I don’t dislike Leona’s, I still miss her classic look) but I’ve found nothing wrong with the overall visuals. Characters no longer look plastic in they are looking pretty fantastic(especially Kula, Chang, Benimaru, and Leona) save for Andy :confused: Animation are looking fluid so what’s the problem. That’s a serious question I would like anybody to point out some exact problems with the games visuals. Please be specific, don’t just textures, point out a time were you see bad textures. PROVE ME WRONG

Best way to understand why people are disagreeing is to read up on impressions of the actual gameplay, like the stuff from Laban that we shared on the front page.

The gist of it is that people who’ve played the game think that it does seem to play much better than XIII and seems to bring much more in from older games like '98.

Yeah seeing as the game has Athena, I don’t think there will be 2 Jpop idol girls. I think it would be cool if the teenage idol girl was a Kpop idol. Kpop does have a pretty big worldwide following and it could also bring more interest to Korean fans.

About the masked girl, I wonder how she’d turn out like.

You can’t set a precedent with the art of one game especially since 13 is what got them into this situation. Saying “since 13 looked better , this is unacceptable” is not a good reason.

You would rather have an update over a game with more characters, more content, more robust movelists, more online modes, the possibility of actual good online, and improved mechanics because of how it looks? That is a ridiculous statement.

All these people who romanticize XIII, I have to wonder how familiar they are with KoF and if they are aware of how butchered of a game XIII is to say these kinds of things. I also think it’s funny how no one on this site gave a shit about XIII until XIV was announced, now we have all these “KoF fans” who never talked about KoF coming out the woodworks to express how upset they are that SNK left their “godly spritework” behind.

I like XIII, back when it came out most of the KoF heads were shitting on the game and I was one of the few people defending it. I think it’s a fine game. That being said they needed to get as far away from that fucking game as possible. Those sprites were just straight up not worth the effort and the game heavily suffered for it. So now we got a game that is pretty much doing everything right and is looking to be one of the most solid KoF’s in the series and all these “KoF fans” are talking about how disappointed they are and how they won’t support this game and that they’re gonna hope everyone skips it so we can wait for the next game. That is a ridiculous statement. You are putting visuals over gameplay and in general comes off as very uninformed. Being unhappy with the visuals is one thing, a lot of people are unhappy about them, but you would rather get an update to XIII? Fuck outta here with that.

Interesting read. If the game does play better than XIII, I will be pleasantly surprised. SNK, please prove me wrong. Prove all of us giving this game shit and being, overall, incredibly hesitant into accepting it. wrong.

@Bubba_da_genius : It IS mostly a textures thing. Not to mention, the graphics make the characters look stiff. So when the overall presentation of the game is a combination of stiff jaggies and textures, seeing the game in motion in what I presume is 60FPS, it creates that clunky aspect of what I was talking about. People use clunky for series, as appropriately as that guy brought up, like Mortal Kombat. Where the gameplay moves in a way that frames LOOK like they’re missing so the characters move awkwardly across the scene, it draws that adjective. KoF14 is improving with each trailer, so I remain hopeful, but I’m talking as an overall aesthetic presentation, it doesn’t look as good as I’d like it to. And this is me giving up hope on the fact that we’ll see those amazing sprites and graphics that were in KoF13. But I love your enthusiasm and hope that I can, one day, be in that same boat.

I said this before and I’ll say it again. The spirte work is impressive for KOF13 but the art style is awful. The super deformed proportions looked terrible and the combo heavy nature of the gameplay is a terrible direction for the series. 13 is not a good KOF game and I would hate to see any future KOF games play or look like it.

As for KOFXIV I’ll have to agree with bubba, I’m really having a hard time seeing where all the hate comes from. I’ve done side by side comparisons, looked over the animations multiple times and to me it looks fine. The only real issue I have is that it’s clear some characters are unfinished compared to others. Andy and kyo still look beta compared to kula and Chang and I imagine most of the roster is in a similar situation.

Am I the only one who thinks Angel’s arm spin animation is a little wonky?

Ok, I understand that it is a texture thing but I’m just not seeing where the textures supposedly look bad, or the stiffness everyone is referring to. I was really hoping for a screen shot or an note of a part in the trailer when there was a particularly bad animation. And for the record of I had it my way we would definitely be seeing KoF XIII style sprites but in the end I believe the fact that many want to sprites keeps them from recognizing that the 3d has improved. Either that or I’m just not seeing something. If that’s the case I really want someone to show me what I’m missing

I was thinking the same thing man, it looks a bit weird, before it looked fluid and natural. They are probably still working on it.

The only think that looks kinda stiff to me is Kyo’s Aragami series, particularly the second qcf+P into K ender, based on the latest trailer.

I have to agree with john grimm on this one, the further kof 14 gets away from 13 the better.

i watched the first trailer and the game to me looked like a maximum impact game, not just textures but the animations to, but now?
It’s almost night and day how much better the game looks now to how the game looked in the first trailer, the game looked like complete shit, it looked like a cheap chinese knock off, at least now it’s starting to look decent.

Also in 13 alot of fluff went missing, special intros, multiple win poses, neutral jump attacks, the taunts looked stupid in 13, ok yeah it’s all fluff but it’s fluff which help to make the game stand out character wise personality wise, stuff that helped make kof stand out in the past, 13 just felt like another fighter.

Hopefully we will get some of this stuff back, otherwise it feels like a backwards step to me

So far I dont like my favorite chars Angel and Kyo, aesthetically Kyo doesn’t look like Kyo he needs his brown hair back, Angel’s voice sound ridiculous and her elbow move is stupid.

KOF14 needs a lot of work tbh but still Im gonna try it when its released I used to love KOF too much.

Alright I doubt any of us will come to a agreement about the graphics but for reference sake I decided to do some more comparison shots from the latest KOFXIV teaser trailer and USF4.

Now given all the "lolz PS2/dreamcast"comments I see on reddit,YouTube comments and even here on SRK I think this finally proves that at the very least it’s not that dated graphically. IMO while the graphics are clearly unfinished they still look as good if not better then SF4. Now granted looking better then a 7 year old game isn’t obviously good news and hopefully by the time it’s released it will look more closer to a PS4 game. The good news is that kula and Chang seem to be heading in that direction so hopefully the rest of the cast can catch up.

I don’t know what you are talking about with the elbow move since she always had that(although her voice does sound younger and weirder) , but kyo has brown hair. The youtube rendering prevents you from seeing it(although it will probably be a lighter shade of brown in the future).

I pray to God the netcode won’t be pure garbage like most US SNK releases.

I hope someone will harp on them to put a lot of improvement, otherwise it will gather a lot of dust.

Has SNK ever had good netcode on their games? 13 steam was Allright but they can do better.
