KoF XIII General Discussion: Part II

Don’t know if this has been posted elsewhere yet, but Atlus just posted this on their facebook page.

“Update on THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII network play: developer SNK PLAYMORE is already working on a patch to further improve online functionality. Details will be released when available… Stay tuned!”

Yeah…posted a few posts up.

i dunno why you can tech throws that are during your recovery, it is just a weird thing in kof xiii. just do better punishes
you just gotta be faster about punishing dps. Also, regarding “it seems like special moves recover so fast to were I would just eat a dp if I’m playing someone who is special move happy,” keep in mind that whether a special move is punishable is very specific to the move, the distance(if terry hits near the end of light burn knuckle, for example, it is safe IIRC), and whether or not your character has an instant command grab
so yeah, it depends on your speed, on online being silly, and on the special move

Sweeps can be quite good in kof, yeah. Use shorthops more if they are hitting you a lot. You may find this to be very useful, it ends up talking about this sort of thing about halfway through:

Played the demo today, never really played KOF so I’m REALLY glad it came out. I was going to buy it anyway but now I won’t wait for a price drop. Game is fantastic, I love the engine. HOWEVER, the online was atrocious. Had some of the worst input lag I’ve ever seen, wow. I couldn’t even block properly. I hear Atlus is patching it, right? I sincerely hope so!

Atlus pretty much is asking SNKP to fix it up. Atlus really has no control on how SNKP handles it, just communication between the consumer and developer. So all we could do is hope, wait, and see.

Good shit, they released a demo. Smart marketing decision.

Just curious, what resolution do you guys play at? Does playing on 720p make it look better? (I play on 1080p and think it looks beautiful as is) I know the sprites are drawn at around 480p but not sure of the backgrounds, they look so sharp I would think they’re drawn at 1080p, which in that case I’d rather leave it at 1080p. SNK did a wonderful job on the upscaling filtering for the sprites against the HD backgrounds.

They’re 720p I believe.

No the characters are drawn around 480p.

And I actually just went ahead and tested it myself. The game does indeed look much sharper at 720p. A lot more details really stand out, and overall the game looks sharper. For instance, the crowd in the night stage outside the arena with the angel statues is MUCH more vibrant. You can just see a heck of a lot more details at 720p than you can at 1080p. (Look at the clipboard of the girl writing on the far right of the London stage…yes, the one who switches from hot to butterface -_-)

However, there is a tradeoff. It’s interesting, instead of an in-game filtering option, switching between 1080p and 720p really is the filtering option. Since the game looks sharper on 720p, it also looks a wee bit more rough/pixelated. The filtering SNK implemented for 1080p really smooths out the lines, so you lose some detail, but the picture looks overall much smoother, and less “old school”.

So it really comes down to personal preference. Although overall the details stand out more on 720p, I think the filtering at 1080p does things well enough to not have to worry about hassling your setup to 720p just for this game.

Curious to hear others opinions :stuck_out_tongue:

Guess I didn’t make myself clear by ‘they’ I meant ‘the stages’ are 720p, the sprites are indeed 480p

I can understand where you’re coming from. In the older KOF games, you spaced your inputs out from each other to chain light normals together. Hit freeze is longer and moves are canceled after the initial hitstun. In this game you gotta cancel the moves right on impact, and there’s not a lot of time to get long inputs in, so if you haven’t buffered all the commands by the time the active frames hit, you won’t be able to cancel. I’m still adjusting to the new combo system myself.

It helps to buffer the commands really early, like right after you know the initial move is gonna hit. Another thing that helped me in older games is sticking moves in the buffer. For example, if I wanted to do close HP > down-forward HK > HCB+K with Kyo, I could do:

cl.:snkc:, :f:, :df:+:snkc:, :d:, :db:, :b:, :snkd:

It sucks when I try to play online and all the hosts boot me from their room. Most likely because I’m at level 1. Never going to get good at this rate if people who are good won’t play against me.

Yeah, netcode aside it seems to be getting a lot of positive buzz and folks are playing it.

The demo is only going to help with that. Played against a few folks from my friend list who dl’ed it (and of course that meant I had to download it but whatever) and they seemed to genuinely like it.

The only thing I think is kinda’ silly about it is that I couldn’t seem to change my buttons before matches… BUT, that my be my own stupidity as I seem to have forgotten how to do it in the full game as well lol.

Anyhow, good decision to put out a demo that also includes the option to play online and get some sort of competition with other demo players (despite the online being… uuuuuugh right now).

Played the demo. Spent a few hours practicing Kyo’s links in the gauge tutorial. Consider myself SOLD!

+1 KOF monster

So the online is pretty bad right now. Im pretty much looking for my second fighting game. My main fighting game right now is SSF4AE 2012. Im looking for a second fighter to pick up and master but Im having the hardest time. SC5? BBCS2? KOF13?? I hate UMVC3 so thats out the question and Street fighter X Tekken is not gaining my interest at all.(I would much rather want Capcom vs snk 3) I also don’t like tekken.

Fighting game needs to have a solid netcode , lobbys, Spectator mode, Ranked mode. just solid online options. There is no excuse for a fighting game not to have these things now and days.

Im not sure what SC5 will be offering online but I know BBCS2 offers everything I want so I might go ahead and pick that up. Ive been hearing bad things on KOF13’s netcode which is a shame because I love the series.

The netcode will be patched. SNKP has been patching most of their releases in the last few years for netplay. Some better than others, but if you already paid for the game then why not at least stick around for the patch?

I downloaded the demo yesterday and have been spending some time on the tutorial mode just trying out stuff…honestly this game looks as good as it does on stream lol…I play with the 360 analog and I didn’t really feel like the hcb to hcf motions were an extensive issue…with time I can tell that people can easily get accustomed to it…the hops and jumps felt responsive, especially super hops? I’m glad that they released the demo and are working on fixing the netcode…
I’ve been reading this thread and I probably haven’t noticed because I’ve been playing on tutorial only…but can you play some matches online with the demo??
As soon as I get some cash (hard times lol) I’m getting this game.

I don’t understand, if a game is native and looks best at 720p, why would companies upscale their game to 1080p and lose a lot of the detail for people who don’t know/care to switch their ps3 to 720? Just to say and brag on the back of the box that it’s 1080p??

Welcome to The Fake-HD Era of consoles. I’d imagine that a corporate head pushed so that the game could be upscaled into 1080p for advertising or some trite reason. I think you may have nailed it on the head: since 1080p sounds “better” than 720p.

KoF XIII is awesome, if netcode is a deal breaker for you, I can only suggest waiting for the patch and then reading up on post patch experiences. There’s no spec mode here though. But the game is really fucking good imo.

I’m extremely hype Skullgirls and VF5FS. Skullgirls is designed to use GGPO, not just thrown in as afterthought. VF5 players say VF5 netcode was already really good so people expecting it to be as good or better but I’m half sure I read no spec mode.

BBCSExtend and SC5 are on my radar too but the previous 2 games are day 1 purchases.
