KoF XIII General Discussion: Part II

Iori’s trial 9 is so evil… :bluu:

Well, you say that…but some characters have to go pretty fast… xD I have a hard time hit confirming Iori combos that start off of low or standing B sometimes. >_>

hey, what are you guys using to play this game? pad or arcade stick? seems like the game is a lot more bearable with an arcade stick, cause some of these trails on a pad are something else.

I got pretty sadface when I realized that 2P didn’t count towards the color unlocks.

Gonna take forever to unlock all those colors.

I’m using a pad… but I’m thinking I’m going to try to find a different pad. Using one of those MadCatz Brawl Pads, and the dpad is murdering my thumbs. Certainly there is a d-pad out there that doesn’t have hard points that cut into the thumb.

I’d switch to a stick, except for the fact that, well, I can’t do shit on a stick.

I’m doing really cool, easy Sans Culotte combos on pad. I need to keep working on them though.

Yea I agree. Playing on pad was a chore for me. Stick made everything easier

Just need to decide if I should use the classic layout or the 2x2 one.

Was messing around with KoF2002 because I heard KoF XIII is closest to that and there’s a boxer character named Vanessa.

That game is awesome, please add Vanessa, she’s great.
Iori with flames is so dope.

I feel so bad for overlooking KoF all this time :[

So far King is my favourite character, though I have to admit I haven’t given much attention to many other characters. In previous KOFs I always liked Blue Mary’s style, but defaulted to Iori when I wanted to win more easily - like my KOF equivalent of Ken. Just wondering, though, I have absolutely no consistency with jumping in with C or D then connecting it to her s.D - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and leaving it late or hitting really low doesn’t seem to guarantee it comboing.

But man, I just love this game. I haven’t wanted to get proficient with every character in a fighting game since I played Tekken 2 when I was about 14. Even in my favourite games, SFIV and SFIII, there are plently of characters I just took one look at and thought “…Nah” to.

Holy shit, somehow I didn’t notice this. This is really cool.

Makes two of us

So how does the fighter’s vitality break down? Is every character at 1000 HP, or does it vary like SSF4/Marvel where the slow heavy have increased health, etc.

Everyone has the same health.

U Been Missing Out! You should try out Heavy D! in 98 if you ever feel like touching that game too. Sick Boxer.

Sick Heavy D! Footage, LOWER THE SOUND!

Yep, each segment on the health bar is 100 health and there are 10 segments altogether. It might seem odd that a frail-looking little girl can take as much punishment as a huge elite soldier, but from a gameplay and balancing point of view, I prefer it much more than SF4’s varying health amounts. In that game, it can feel too much like a cop-out from actually trying to balance things; “We can’t figure out how to balance Makoto properly, so we’ll make it so you die slightly sooner!”

Yeah, I’m glad it’s universal health actually. I was scratching my head at the health variances in the UMVC guide and was mystified as to why characters who hit like a freight train but supposedly can’t combo heavy need 300,000 more health than other characters. Health crutches are the only way I can look at it.

Health is an artificial balancing tool. Giving a broken character low health doesn’t suddenly make him “balanced” and giving big slow characters a lot of health just makes their bad matchups take longer.

I really like that everyone has around the same health in KOF. I really irked me when I played Akuma in whatever SF game and he’s a glass jaw because of his options. Seth in IV is one of the most fun characters to watch dominate and people are saying it’s fair for him to have such low health since the cast suffers poorly against powerful rushdown. Can you imagine 98 Iori with health/stun like Seth? KOF is good because SNK lets their characters breathe. The games aren’t perfect but no game is.

Amen to that. I’d say that despite the inevitable lack of perfectness, this is the better route of character design compared to MvC3 or SF4. I love this game so much - the feel of it is just spot on for me. I just wish it had a better netcode and more publicity. I seriously keep daydreaming about winning the lottery and then using my millions to fund a KOF XIII advert blitz on North American and UK TV.

I just had a dream last night that I was playing XIII UM with Heavy D! and doing some crazy shit. Tis’ but only a dream. I really miss American Sports team (not Brian.)

Why is color editor so addicting? Lol

Why are you hating on Brian?
