KOF Team Construction

Appreciate the feedback. Yea I’ve been neglecting reflects as a whole and not making people afraid of qcf+A/C enough to even profit from feints. Good shit. I do gotta get his neutral game down, because I just been trying to thrive off just hardcore fundamentals and basics when he’s out there and then fishing for a punish. Or end up getting rushed down to which I don’t have an answer for with him. Haven’t even gotten guardbroken in this game until he’s out lolol. He does have some good normals. I want to stick with dude. He’s straight as an arrow, so I just gotta be more on point. Just haven’t copped a good feel with the extent of playtime being solid locals, but this is best anyway. Dudes that’ve been in training mode only are going to have a real awakening to the pace of XIII and just KOF in general.

But yea that was my main problem. Getting massively zoned out and baited. And with Ralf/Maxima/Shen I found no relief. But Yuri was the move and gonna get Shen broke in so that I can run him as a like a “semi-battery” which’ll just make him a stronger anchor later on. Thanks man.

Thank you for you time for answering me, Laban. Your words were pretty helpful.

With a little more of time since my first post, I really saw how flexible my characters are in any of positions.

Usually I only keep Ash last, since he really can controle the pace of the match with his good zoning - and having bar do make people scared of him (Sans-Culotte for anti-airing is too good). Both Mature and Vice are good characters to test the opponent out, but I’m focusing for now on having Vice on point - since Mature coming right afterwards can just come and chip the opponent without many risks if they’re on low health. Plus EX Despair is also pretty nice (good damage by itself and invul start-up).

Something that I noticed is that Mature really appreciates HD to up her damage, while Vice is pretty fine with meterless combos (and still having good HD options). So having both meters avaliable with Mature do raise her offensive potential - which also supplements the info you have me earlier. Vice also have more ways to start a combo - so, if I hit-confirm something with Mature, I’ll want the maximum damage avaliable.

Thank you again for helping me out. =) - I’d rep you if SRK still had the option.

I am currently trying to run Clark/Ryo/Saiki, apparently Clark is not a good battery? so I’m gonna switch it to…Ryo/Clark/Saiki

I know like…nothing about Saiki, since he’s new and there’s not too much info on him. you think he’s good for a battery? I’m not sure if he really needs the bar.

I’m trying to run King/Andy/Robert, and practicing Takuma on the side if one of the 3 doesn’t work out. Is that a good order to have them in, and do you recommend that I switch one of the characters with Takuma?

Right now I’m playing Leona / Mature / K’

I see a lot of people that puts leona as 1st but I heard she’s meter dependant…thoughts ?
I could also put Mature on point and use battery ?

When EX iori comes out I’m planning on doing Mature / K’ <-> EX Iori…haven’t decided the order for these 2 yet

I think I may have to make a secondary team, lol. Played against some friends locally tonight (one is my usual training partner, the others are new to this type of fighter) for like five hours straight tonight and did a lot of random matches… and ended up playing a lot of Athena. I’ve never hated her but she’s never been my favorite, but wow… I dunno, she grew on me tonight.

Yuri’s hella fun, been playing her in every KOF since I got into the series, and I forgot she has a demon flip and a damn dive kick now, lol.

Then there’s Hwa, who I’ve been playing a lot since getting the game anyway and want to play with… then there’s Joe, Vice, the aforementioned Mai, Clark… dammit, too many good choices, so little time to practice them all!

I’ll still be “feeling this game out” over what’s left of the weekend. After watching Coopa on stream with Leona, I got inspired to keep her on my main team (was thinking of swapping her for Yuri or Athena). He ran her first one match IIRC and… wow. Didn’t realize how dangerous she could be in front. (hopefully I’m not remembering that wrong, lol.)

Right now I’m thinking I should have Kula up first for meterless damage, Leona up second to lame it out or go on the offensive if Kula’s managed to get two down, and Terry as the anchor to work with all that meter.

Might go with the “Cute Girls Team” as an alternate lol (Kula, Athena, Yuri), although I haven’t thought about placement yet.

I think my hands are getting used to KOF’s “style” again as well. Starting to pick up on the timing of the drive combos and such, though I still couldn’t pull them off consistently in-match yet. Lots of training dojo (aka Mission Mode) time in my immediate future.

Hmmm, it totally depends on how you play your characters and what you want to do with them. Clark could battery up in the manner of not necessarily needing to use bar or drive at all. He could do his double Gatling loops or keep running mix ups with his okizeme game with his different Super Argentina Back Breakers and great set of normals. You could put him second if you want to catch someone or hit confirm into an EX Super Argentina Back Breaker then super cancel it. It seems as if his extended combos in HD don’t really need meter, so I’d say I’d like to put him on point but second position is also okay if you want those super cancels and max cancels.

Saiki’s corner combos doesn’t seem to need bar so far but I don’t really know what he has for big mid-screen combos yet so he might need bar. But with his Qcf+A, it seems like he could battery up really well just zoning with projectiles since he’s able to control space really well and really quickly like 02 Athena projectiles. So he could build meter up as well through his natural zoning elements. If you do his Mission mode Trials, you should be able to get an idea what to do for his corner combos for bigger outputs.

All I could say is just put the character that you perform the biggest damage output with as your last position, usually involving HD combos and Stock. Otherwise, I’d say play all four characters and pick between them depending on the kind of opponent you’re playing against. Perhaps you’re more familiar with a particular match up or that a certain character of your will benefit against the opponent’s choices. Personally, I should be ready to run at least 90% of the cast up to 100% comfortability within a month or two; so you learning 4 characters should be no biggy.

It depends on the person playing Leona, but Leona does have more ways to scare the opponent when she does have meter because she’ll have access to instant overhead set ups that combo into V-slasher and her meterless, corner HD combos do pretty significant damage as well. So she could be put anywhere in my opinion but I’d like to have her on second. She’s also a character I like to put on point because her normals and spacial control let me dictate the pace of the game early with the first round and I could see the opponent’s response to her spacial control.

Mature could be put as battery, her hit confirms into rekkas do about 200 or so damage, being about 20% of the opponent’s life. She could spend a Stock and 1 Drive here and there to do extended combos for about 40% life so it’s just up to player to decide if one wants to do that. I’d say she should be able to do fine on point and build some meter due to her natural play. Though if you’re going to run K’, I’d say he’d do better on point as battery while you could utilize Mature’s zoning with EX Projectile and getting the opponent into traps and capitalizing hard off of it.

So if I wanted to play kinda “optimally”, I’d run K’/Mature/EX Iori. EX Iori should theoretically play any position because of his natural design. What might make him different from 98 or 02 is just primarily his frame advantages or disadvantages after attacks that could mess up his effectiveness, but otherwise he should theoretically be one of the best characters in the game. Judging by the combo videos coming out though, I don’t think his damage output isn’t as high as some of the other cast for the meter being used. So we’ll see how he ends up.

You guys helped me a lot. Going with Athena/K’/Kula. Hope I can get good at this game. Thanks a lot ya’ll.

Its been a while since i’ve played KOF but here is my team

Duo long/King/Elizabeth or i may switch Duo long with Yuri at times.

I’m thinking that i am missing a power house to break down the guard meter.

My team
Athena/Raiden/Daimon w/ Clark as backup

I also like Clark but not sure having 3 grapplers in one team is a good idea. Also, i really want to get better w/ Raiden. What makes him so amazing? People mention the drop kick? As for Daimon, he’s probably the closest to Gief & been putting the most hours into him. I like him & got most of his basic combos down,he’s definitely my main…As for Athena im not really a big fan of these type of characters but she seem so easy to use, can play good keep away game w/ great speed. I dont like her but seem i have to try less to actually win w/ her…

How are these teams?

Yuri/Kyo/Leona

Yuri/Kyo/Athena

Yuri/Kyo/Terry.

What orders are suitable?

I think i’d put Kyo last in the second one since he can deal a lot of damage and is your last stand kind of man.
Then Athena either your first or second Anchor because she can use or gain a lot of meter and Then Yuri second to take advantage of that meter.

Where is King best placed?

I like King first. She can gain and use meter fairly well and she’s got some very good neutral game. She doesn’t need meter to be blisteringly annoying and you can cancel her slide on hit/block into a safer move which is good too.

thanks. what exactly do you mean by neutral game?

i’m playin’ duo lon/benimaru/kim

tried out a bunch of characters but i feel like this is what i want to stick with. do you guys think kim is a solid anchor? i really don’t want to put benimaru as anchor for some reason although he does use meter very well.

From what I get and can tell, Kim is best on point since he builds meter quickly as a battery.

Ah, neutral game is the term you use for when you’re on a stand off. The “How do I get in”? part of fighting. Hence why it’s called neutral game. Nobody’s being attacked and nobody’s defending perse. For King, she can poke people from a long distance with her fireball or shut people out of the air. She’s not being aggressive or defensive, but she’s blocking options her opponents might have. She has some answers with meter too. Her EX trapshot is a nice anti-air as well as pretty fast start up. It can start you off in a combo all its own.

Her hop D is really long range and its got some buffed active frames. This makes her really dangerous just keeping people out in the air (even though it’s a little more vertical than the straight horizontal you might be looking for). Her other good normals are her st.C for some decent anti-air and her df+D to get in with some quick pokes and pressure.

So, again, it’s not talking about combos or her defensive options, but what she can do outside of that when she’s not in the thick of it.

Yeah neutral game the part most forums neglect (in favor of combo talk) but probably the most important part of gameplay, lol.

Like Laban said team construction is really dependent on your own playstyle of your characters, a good exercise is probably to go and try to observe your own matches (save replay or w.e) then find out what exactly you’re burning meter on most commonly. Like do use a lot EX DP for a certain char? Then try to do a cost/benefit analysis of that meter usage and whether they’re better off in the 2nd/3rd slot. Or maybe you should stop mashing EX DP so much, lol.

My current team is Andy/Mai/Leona-Yuri-Terry (I can’t figure out a third for shit in this game)

I burn through a disgusting amount of meter with Andy, because I can drive cancel his elbow charge into an EX Shoryuudan for some pretty solid damage…and for me, it’s really easy to super cancel a Hishoken into a Geki Hishoken. But when he’s the last or even the middle, I can’t seem to get anything going with him, I don’t know why. So I just keep him in front.
