This I can see happening. I’m pretty sure Ignition isn’t going produce many copies of this game in the states. SNKP won’t be affected much, seeing on how their sales are stronger in Japan, Hong Kong, and Latin America.
What? You mean where most people would rather pirate the games or just keep playing crappy 2k2 hacks? Not to mention that the less copies the US gets, the less copies we get, IF we are lucky. Do you have any ****ing clue how long it took me to find the KoF Orochi Saga? Half a year, and even then I only got it because I went on a trip to the US >_<
It’s kinda Sucks that Even Mortal Kombat is bigger in the US than KOF to non-fighting game fans… Hence DC chose the crappy MK vs DC instead of an SNK vs DC.
There was the initial hit, sure, but I think the rehashed sprites had a lot to do with it too. We definitely seem more of the “it looks like crap, toss it!” type. Obviously there are gamers who don’t care, but I think they’re the minority.
I mean, look at how many people complained about recycling Morrigan’s sprite in the later Capcom games, can you imagine the endless bitching if ALL the characters were handled that way? American gamers would never stand for it.
Hopefully KOF XII can open some new doors/eyes.
Good to have you back.
All I am gonna say to a lot of you is that most of you should actually go to Mexico and these other places and talk to these people before drawing these conclusions. I tell you what, You’ve given me material to discuss next time I am in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Wow, what a BS review:tdown: The characters aren’t artistically different from the backgrounds at all. What the heck is a “boring to use control scheme”? More buttons equals more fun or something?
fuck taylor cocke. we decide ourselves.
Why are all the games going to XBL? Garou and KOF 98, but nothing for the PSN? Is there a reason for this?
I’ll assume it’s because they’re already for PS2, I dunno
i’m not going to buy the xbox 360 just for garou and 98… i’m getting the 360 for other shit. and i’m not going to build a stick specifically for the 360 either. i’m bummed, but i’ll be thankful for the fighters that are released on the psn.
I think SNK actually has a real respectable catalog in the Japanese Playstation store. makes me sad to think about… We’re over here getting hyped over online Garou on console and they had that shit on PS2 years ago
- PSN charges the publisher to put the games on PSN, XBL charges the consumer (XBL fees). So there is less risk putting a game on XBL.
2)The games were on PS2
If you want to play UM online, you’re going to have to get a 360, or wait for either the arcade hardware to be emulated, or for PS2 emulation to get GGPO and be practical on common computers. Both of these will take years.
Even though SNK MVS arcade cabinets were more economical since you could switch out games easily, they were much harder to find back in the day than a Street Fighter arcade cabinet, at least in the Bay Area where I come from. I would be so excited just to find a MVS with Samurai Shodown II because it was so rare. KoF, Fatal Fury, SamSho, World Heroes, Art of Fighting…None of these games could match the popularity and competition found with Street Fighter. And this was a shame for me, because I still have a hard time finding competition in SNK games in my area. Even Mortal Kombat II was bigger than KoF or any SNK game in the area that I lived back in the day.
SNK has always catered to more of a niche audience here in the US.
That’s to bad, MVS machines were a dime a dozen here in the Bronx. They were in grocery stores, laundromats, comic shops, barber shops etc. back in the good old days.
Anyway, I guy once walked up to me when I was playing Kof 2000 and said “I hate that fu**ing game” for absolutely no reason. I think there’s a certain bias here that holds not just KOF or SNK titles, but other series like Darkstalkers back among the other things that have been mentioned throughout the topic. I know people who like Mortal Kombat better too, not that there’s anything wrong with that:wonder:
I’m sure KOFXII will help KOF become more popular than it ever has been.
This is the first official KOF that has online play and its multiplatform, plus they finally updated the sprites, so it’s gonna get more attention due to the better high quality presentation.
(yeah I heard regular Xbox had KOF2003 online or something, but Live wasn’t as popular back then like online play is now these days on consoles.)
even KOFXI home version never received the marketing support Ignition is giving KOFXII (yeah it isn’t Halo 3 level marketing, but it still is really up there.)
this will bring in new fans, and make the future brighter for KOF.
here it was the complete opposite. there where sf machines, but neo geos where everywhere. from game centers to restaurants and all. and MK wasnt represented at all, nor did it need to be. piece of shit game that it was.
This is just a theory, and I could be way off, but here it is…
Could KOF’s lack of popularity in the US have to do with the lack of NeoGeo home consoles in the US?
NeoGeo was extremely expensive and barely advertised in the US. They always seemed to have the best arcade ports, but I believe the system cost around $500 bucks. So everyone went with a SNES and Genesis instead. The SNK games on those systems didn’t translate as well and weren’t really popular. So all the console kids flocked towards Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. This even carried over to Arcade.
I was lucky. Here in New York we had a decent arcade scene. SF and MK were always more popular, but I remember KOFs at local Pizza Huts and movie theaters.
that’s one thing, the other is kof has a steep learning curve for beginners, its either you get it or not, the buffer zone in between is rather narrow.
There’s a HUGE mistake here…
When you refer to “South America” you usually refer to Mexico… But South America isn’t just Mexico.
KOF is only popular in Mexico and Brazil, but in the other South American countries, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are more popular.
