patrick i think u owe me $10
Shoryuken - Buy Your Own Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Cabinet for $17,000
you know you want to gary
Hmmm out of curiosity, let’s do some math and see what it’d take for this to be a feasible idea.
Suppose we force people to pay to play on the cabinet (it is an arcade cabinet, after all). Make it $1 per game (bo5 rounds) to match Lovegety. Then 17,000 versus matches would have to be played on the cabinet in order for it to pay for itself. Suppose it needs to pay for itself in about 5 months (before AE comes out on console in… June?). Then the cabinet needs to be played about 794 times per week. If a match lasts 4 minutes on average, including people getting on and off the cab, selecting their character, etc., then the cabinet needs to be played for about 53 hours per week.
Hmmm nope, this wouldn’t work out. Even if the cost per game was $2, there’s no way the machine would see constant play 27 hours per week for the entire 5 months. I don’t think it would even pay for half of itself.
(Oh, and it might actually be illegal to do any of this without a license from the city. But I’m only curious about the math. :P)
lol bill owning us with numbers XD
So I’m looking at the bracket from MTL Nemesis. (Shoutouts to Scott and Patrick for representing, btw.) I see that Patrick beat Snafoo in winners round 2, then lost in winners round 4, then… he immediately had to fight Snafoo again in losers? Wtf?
This looks like an ALJ bracket, so apparently ALJ is ass at crossing the losers brackets to avoid double jeopardy. It’s not just Patrick: ANYONE who loses in r2 winners will have to face the guy they lost to if he loses in r4 winners. And anyone who loses in r3 will have to face the guy they lost to if he loses in r5. (Beyond that, the bracket is crossed correctly.)
This is stupid. You can easily work backwards from the winners finals and create a bracket with less chance of double jeopardy. E.g. working from Patrick’s path, you can switch AI-AJ with AM-AN and switch E-H with M-P. Then Snafoo would have to travel twice as far before he meets Patrick again in losers, and the guys who lose at AI-AJ would also have to travel farther before they can be in double jeopardy.
The only downside is that the guys who lost 1st round could face double jeopardy if they win “only” 6 times in losers rather than 10 times. But why are the 1st round losers favoured over guys who lost in rounds 2 and 3? Is a 1st round loser REALLY going to win his next 6 games to possibly end up in double jeopardy? And half the time, the 1st round losers are just Byes anyway.
Ugh, this hurts my head. The useless “seed by location” ability. The “crossed losers bracket” that isn’t. The fact that it uses an MS Access database (as Mike informed me earlier). ALJ is shitware and I want to strangle whoever made it… unless he confesses that his program is shit, because I can empathize with that.
(TLDR: ALJ Tournament Maker makes shitty brackets and it pisses me off for some reason.)
believe it or not bill, ive been doing some rough calculations and it is actually feasible to purchase this machine. The only problem is, if getty gets it, we lose all business for it, thus leaving us in the hole.
Hahaha yes Bill I know exactley what you are saying. I always thought something was screwed up. It seems every tournament 2-3 people have to play someone they have played before pretty early. I wish there was a way to change it so that it didn’t happen the current way it does.
It’s the like the system follows its same crossing into losers path for aternating rounds, causing the issue that you see (or like a mirror flip if you wanna think of it graphically lol). The way to solve it woul be to do like an “alternate + 1” approach…and so on.
This problem you pointed out is also the sole reason why I get blamed for stupid brackets 3-4 rounds in (except for patrick’s mistake that one time…sorry pat :(). Couple that on top with that it is virtually impossible to maintain region sorting in both winner’s and loser’s brackets, and sometimes you will have what seems like a very unfair bracket to some people…,
Since the data base is MS Access, I wonder if there is a way to possibly change the ordering to at least avoid the issue that you noticed. Hmmmm…
I do really like your suggestion, cause you are right 1st round are usually just byes to begin with. Maybe we can fix it…
I think there are few more options we have.
-
purchasing AE software and DIY cabinet,I’m not sure whether we can buy AE software or not, but if possible, this is the best option IMO, because if getty gets AE then we can sell AE software on ebay and keep the cabinet, and it’s cheaper.
-
rent AE for 6months, again, I’m not really sure it’s a valid option. even if it’s possible the fees would be expensive.
-
purchasing AE, and if either getty gets AE or AE is released on console then we sell it. I don’t know resale value, but it would be more than 50% of the price.
3-a: just selling AE software(we could get a good price for it because most arcade owners do not want to spend extra money for the cabinet) and keep the cabinet.
Hey guys, I’m planning to come up one day this week to Bisons, and I heard somewhere that it was open on Fridays now as well as Wednesdays and Sundays - it so happens that Friday lines up perfectly on my end. Is it true? I can’t tell for sure by reading through the thread.
But the DIY cabinets wouldnt have the card reader, which is an incentive to use the cabinet more often.
Wednesday and Sundays are the official days where we have the most people. Fridays don’t always happen and when they do usually only have a small group of people and nothing serious happens per say (no stream, recorded matches, ranbat etc.). If you are making the trek, Wed/Sunday will probably be more valuable (although Sunday’s seem to be off every other week now due to paralysis lol).
yea, I’ll post it up when I’m back to loo and playing causal. so we can figure out who’s the best lol
the cards don’t work outside of japan. the cabs would need to be hooked up to a japanese internet connection.
Hey guys, any idea on when the next tourney will be? Just wanting to know so I can book it off work in time!
Feb 26th!
Thanks rob!

I thought one was going up yesterday?..but we are ironing a few more details (eg. times wrt MvC3 and SSFIV…still need to figure out how to do that). Thursday by the latest. I hope to see you at the next tourney Noodlenoob!
