Thanks! I like that, “losing only by disqualification”, lol.
So what happened was, we originally planned to leave by 3 on Sunday. Our driver, Azer, tanked the whole 10-hour drive both ways, plus an extra hour that he had to drive between Waterloo and Toronto to pick us up. And he didn’t even enter any tournies: just played some KoF and VSav casuals. That man is Jesus. Anyway, we found out on Friday that AH3 finals were supposed to be played on Sunday. Oh well, the game is usually run first thing in the morning while everoyne else is still asleep, and it was possible none of us would make it to the finals anyway. Here’s how the 5 of us finished on Saturday:
- 17th
- 9th
- 9th
- 5th (MadScientist, eliminated by me in a tight set)
- waiting in losers semis (myself)
On Sunday, I woke up early, put on my Bison’s Autoshop T-shirt, and went to the venue at 9 am. We found out that AH3 top 4 would be streamed after MK9 top 8, and MK9 was scheduled to start at noon. MK9 actually started just before 2. At 3 pm, when we felt we should head back home, I was told:
“Don’t worry, you guys should be able to leave by 4… well… unless you win your matches…”
That reminds me: after I beat MadScientist (Derek) on Saturday, several players looked over and said “WHAT? DEREK LOST TO BILL??” lol.
Anyway, before we left on Sunday, I wanted a runback with the guy who sent me to losers. First, I had a fun casual set with him on Saturday’s stream [URL=‘http://www.justin.tv/st1ckbug/b/288861112’]here at 1:43:20 (I’m on the right). I originally chose to use a 2-month-old “main” at ECT (I was tier-whoring), but after playing this set, I decided to go back to my original blue-haired main. I proceeded to mass casuals with her on Sunday to get back into shape, and then I money matched that guy: I won 3-1. Made me wish I’d used my original main from the beginning (common story, I know :P).
After we left to come back to Canada, he went on to take 2nd place, which makes me wonder if I could’ve taken him and others down in the tourney if I’d stayed. Maybe I missed out on a kickass experience… or choking on-stage and a whole new level of tourney salt. But I think I made the right call: Azer eventually got home at 3 am and I’m glad I didn’t force him to stay any longer. Besides, it’s not like this is the last time I’ll be in the top 4.
My goal for this tournament was to keep a “winning mindset” for every game and every round, without getting too nervous or too careless. This was my goal in SF4 as well, and SF4 is a great game for learning to play with a calm and patient mind. But in AH3, it’s easy to get careless flying around the screen and doing random stuff in casuals. After an embarassing performance at Power Up in April, I swore I’d get that strong mindset back, and I think it’s the reason I made it to top 4 at ECT.
My goal for the next tournament is to be able to adapt to new opponents faster. E.g. in the set I lost in winners, I got hit by the same throw-bait 3 or 4 times! That’s unacceptable. Ideally, in the next tournament I’d like to avoid being hit by the same trick twice.
Damn, it was exciting how far we got at ECT! MadScientist was just 1 round away from making it to winners finals! And in the single-elim team tourney, MadScientist and I made it to 3rd-place-tie. My hope is that we’ll keep on practicing AH3 and put 1 or maybe even 2 Canadians in the winners finals at the next tourney.
(By the way, I swear I saw another guy wearing a Bison’s Autoshop T-shirt at the tourney. I know Montreal and Ottawa were there, too. I wonder how they did…?)
