King of Fighters Movie - Behind the Scenes

A slap in the face is too kind…

More like taking a dump on it. It sucks too cause you always hold out hope that Hollywood would apply some common sense to these type of movies.
I know a TON of people here gave Legend of Chun Li some shit but I actually came out of that movie entertained. The movie needed some tweeks to it but it didn’t embarrass the Street Fighter name like people seem to think it did.

Agreed. In fact, they should cut their losses and just play that scene on a continuous loop for the entire run-time of the film.

She really said that? I thought it was just a joke made up on the forums :wasted:

My favourite quote was the one from Grandpa Terry, when they said something about if Fans of the game will like it.
“Oh yeah it’s got heaps of action! So if you like Video Games, you’ll love this.”

errr… thanks Tezza.

Can Mr Big at least be the second in command or something?

Apart from that I like the sounds of your overall plans! I like the idea of the ‘utimate crossover’ too. It would be nifty if they did something like have 4 different trailers, each one focusing on one of the different teams or something.

The funny thing is these movies probably won’t win awards, but they’d be entertaining enough. My main point is that it isn’t that hard at all to update something for a movie while keeping true to the source material. What they did with KoF is… perplexing.

Imagine if KoF the game really was about alternate dimensions where normal people become tournament fighters, and because it still had SNK’s fight mechanics it manages to sell well. Now let’s say this KoF gets a movie deal. The writers would have looked at the plot and said, “This shit has to change.”

I was conditioned to believe writers and directors had to pull in the reins on the wacky plots of videogames - but taking KoF, with it’s number of relatively screen friendly plots, and making something more absurd than the videgame is downright disastrous. How many times have we seen classic characters get cast by young actors/actresses for franchise investment and appealing to a demographic? You’re telling me they found some old dude to play a CIA agent Terry Bogard?! That’s not artistic revision, that’s not ‘updating’, that’s completely disrespecting source material.

Many changes I may not have done myself but I do understand certain changes in these game movies (unlike purist who think these games should be adapted 1:1). But at least keep in mind that there must have been something about the source material worth keeping sacred otherwise nobody would want to make a movie about it! It’s common sense, even if there’s no hard rules in art.

I felt like that for the Dragonball movie, too. If Fox wanted Goku to be a high school student - I actually have ideas on how I would have wrote that! But the writers didn’t seem to ‘care’ about DBZ’s mythology beyond having a loose reference (mind you, I liked Dragonball Evolution… the first and last ten minutes anyway). It frustrates me as a writer and gamer.

thought this shit was cancelled?

Who thought it was canceled?

I agree with you on most parts. While I can sometimes see good reason for changes (after all things aren’t always going to work between two different mediums, ie Comics to Movies etc), but often times the only reason they change things is in an attempt to find a bigger audience, and that usually just ruins things for everyone concerned (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for example).

As you said, they seemed to have replaced the plot for KOF with something just as, if not more ridiculous and weird, so I have no idea why they decided to do that.

Finally, as for the casting of Terry, I think that was a budget thing more than anything, looking at his IMDB page, he was only a stunt-man before this movie, so he probably wasn’t demanding a high salary. Not to take anything away from the man, he might be a decent actor, but… he just doesn’t seem right for Terry at all.

The problem is that you don’t springboard a theatrical release off of direct to video content. It just isn’t done for a variety of reasons. One is that you are making the DTV for cheap, so you are going to end up with b-actors, stunt men, and the like. For your plan to work you would then have to lock them into multi-picture deals with bigger option pickups for each installment, which production companies generally don’t want to do. Then you are in the position of creating a theatrical release combining a bunch of b-level and below actors who have no national pull to bank an ad spend on.

Also, each DTV movie would have to sell a shitload in order to justify a theatrical movie spin-off. Now it sometimes happens that a movie will bomb in theaters and then become a hit on home video so much that it propels a theatrical sequel (Harold and Kumar 2 being a recent example), but the main reason that video was able to be a hit was because it was released nationally in its theatrical run and had all the exposure and ad dollars associated with that run. A DTV title is going to have a very small ad spend and limited exposure, basically only being sold to its respective genre audience. Another problem in this instance is that there are no Fatal Fury games being made, no Art of Fighting games being made, and no Psycho Soldier. So not only do you not have momentum from a theatrical (however busted), but you have no tie-in or brand recognition to highlight your DTV offering. This doesnt even take into account the horrible DVD market right now (hint: people aren’t buying them).

Again, these movies are only going to play to snk-heads who already know where its going and know what King of Fighters is, so it doesn’t seem necessary to go through the motions of setting up a world that really isnt that difficult to grasp anyway. It may play out not as hype but as boredom until the “real” movie is released.

People cant even get hyped to play KOF video games…I just dont see them getting hyped over KOF movie, especially one so inside baseball and j-centric as you are pitching.

King of Fighters could have been a solid fun fantasy martial arts pic, but the reality is that 95% of licensed material is controlled and created by people who dont give a shit about the license.

You’re cutting out the awesome Metal Slug characters for Ikari Warriors? Why even have a movie called “Metal Slug” if Fio and Rumi aren’t going to be in it?

Fatal Fury would’ve made a better movie than KOF, but I think the best choice would be Mark of the Wolves. You’ve got a manageable number of characters, and all the famous FF characters that aren’t main characters are at least in the storyline (Blue Mary is Kevin Ryan’s cousin, Andy and Mai are Hokutomaru’s parents, Geese is in the intro, and Kim is Jae’s and Hwan’s dad). It’s got a Hollywood-friendly plotline without being stupid, and half the characters write themselves.

Plus, the original Fatal Fury series had a lot of goofy characters that fit the series, but would be AWFUL in live-action. A live-action Duck King would set civil rights back twenty years.

It might as well be.

mmmm…hell yes.

thats where she essentially made her name. look at all her movies…the boxing one,f&f series, avatar…she plays the same part.

I Wouldnt mind watching it for a bit of fun if I was bored

In this movie Terry is some old dude beating people up with a sleeping bag, if they made a MOTW they would probably get some 80+ year old cripple to play Terry.

Though I might watch this bootleg, I had a lot of fun dissing DOA when I watching it with some friends (for free because who would pay to see that?). Though the chun li movie was just terrible. It’s so bad you couldn’t make fun of it because it was like beating a man with no limbs.

Just added finding that vice and mature scene to my to do list.

1st post link needs to be updated with this one as it was pulled. From shame i’m assuming

Has this movie been released yet? I wouldn’t know since I haven’t rented a movie in a while.

The sad part about this movie…you can photoshop ANYTHING as a fake poster and it will be more more relevant to kof than this movie actually is.

speaking of pulling stuff from shame, I noticed their official website was taken down. Furthermore, their official twitter and myspace hasn’t been touched upon in months. Maybe the got the message?

lol Clyde is a striker now? … broken.
