Well, I’m interested in this again. Looks like SNKP is fixing all the main problems XII had. 2k2 style customs, no clashing, more characters and moves, EX moves aren’t a bad thing as long as they don’t make regular moves shitty a la 3S, no zooming, the speed seems to be close to '98, all good stuff.

If they also get the casual friendly stuff right (story, final boss, extras and all that shit) and add a decent online to the console ports they may save KOF from a commercial failure.

Hmm, from what I’ve seen and read so far, this game is shaping up nicely. But it’ll take a lot more then that to get that god awful taste of 12 out of my mouth. -_-

If this is true then SNKP better not fuck this up PERIOD!

Yeah, I am not surprised either tbh. I’ve always figured that 12’s failure is gonna bite them in the ass one way or another. Like I said before, while they may be good at making games, they SUCK at making good business decisions. :bluu:

Btw, am I the only one here that feels that this is like a “Tekken 4 to Tekken 5” senario of sorts?

At least it makes more sense than SBX being at SBO.

well you can also tell that mai is more popular than athena because A athena wasn’t in the first cvs game. Athena wasn’t even in svc chaos either, but mai was in both the snk made game and the capcom made one. Mai also was even in NGBC but the KOF athena wasn’t the bouncy one just has more power over people =D

Rose was never dead /storyline scrub

Four years is rushed, now?

The game was planned for 3 years. It took 4 to get to the (very incomplete) level of XII. Considering the state XIII is now, it may have taken up to 5 1/2 years to finish the whole game.

You think it’s only your boss that gets mad when you deliver something late? That gaming divisions have infinite resources? That the gaming division can just say “hey, pachinko division, send us some money?

Blame them for shitty planning, blame them for not using the flat, cheap Rumblefish style sprites they had early on, but saying it was rushed?!?

Seriously, it’s like the minute people enter a forum, they stop living in the real world.

lets just all stop talking about XII from here on out

I could have thought for certain Rose was dead prior to SF4 but after Alpha 3. Shows how much I know I guess. I also know it was Gen and someone else…Gouken perhaps?

…Whoops, we’re straying off-topic.

Maybe I should try to learn King for this…

honestly those vids have some promise looked solid. No retard CC system and more advanced tactics and you got someone interested.

Frankfurt: While KOF XII was in development for a long time, people say (fairly) that it was rushed because so much of that development time was apparently tied up in the simple act of DRAWING the characters. The time and resources needed to make these all-new assets quite obviously detracted from the time the planners and dev team had to really flesh out and differentiate the stripped-down roster.

The sudden appearance and success of Street Fighter 4 in both the foreign (Western) and domestic (Japan) markets put additional heat on an already long-in-production game to just plain hit the street to try and capture some residual hype from SF4 as a complement and/or alternative to that game. In the end, they apparently made just enough money back on their investment to go back and finish their work in KOF XIII, but they lost a lot of momentum they could have gained because of the general attitude “we waited four years for THIS? Sure, it’s pretty, but it’s so sloppy and bare-bones compared to older KOFs…”

Although really, this is what reasonable people expected. A fully 2D art revamp of this quality was bound to have significant costs in how time and development resources (money and creative energy) were allocated, and KOF XII was the unfortunate but natural result of that philosophy. KOF XIII, by that same token, is a more reassuring confirmation of that progression, as a much more fully developed title that builds on the new art assets introduced in XII.

I think it’s fair to say KOF XII was rushed in the sense that it shipped before it really seemed “finished” – KOF XIII is more like KOF XII if KOF XII were finished. It retains or discards a lot of the highly experimental system and move properties from XII (some of which were admittedly good ideas) and presents a much more coherent game flow.

Mai’s REALLY earned her unofficial title as First Lady of KOF this time around. So many people think she’s another pretty face (among other parts of her anatomy) to move otaku/weeaboo dollars, but that’s bullshit. Mai is a perenially solid (if not dominating) character design whose only misfortune is being overshadowed and/or overlooked by many serious players in their team selection. Hopefully she’s got enough crazy shit within the KOF XIII system to really shine this time around – but more importantly, hopefully the game she’s in is good enough to make playing her worthwhile. Top tier or middle tier (if they make her low tier I’ll start fires), she’s guaranteed a spot on my team. Mai/Clark/Leona for New Maikari Warriors!

But yeah, I am very impressed with how XIII is shaping up. I hope they kept the CD chains (and possibly CD crumple) from XII, but if they didn’t, I am sure the new Drive Cancel system may help make up for its absence. The game so far seems to have an overall feel like “’'98 UM with EX/FADC”, which I really like. Can’t wait to see Yuri in action.

Um…remember her?

…And her?

And you already know the deal with KOF 12, right? Right…

This game must be coming out really soon to be in SBO.

Okay, on to console release…

hum could have sworn i said the kof athena (of course i remember her but that’s the goddess athena) as if you look at her she’s not actually the same one now is she =D.

Plz tell me Rugal gonna be in this game!

I don’t get that. Different people does these tasks, longer art development should give the other guys more time to polish things. And it’s not like they sit around and wait for art assets, they would of course use dummy graphics like boxes or the raw 3D renders in the meantime.

After how KOFXII was received, it is quite impossible to not talk about KOFXII since it was a bust.
KOFXIII looks good but everyone hopes it isn’t a bust.

2D animation, even when you’re more-or-less rotoscoping like with XII, is a surprisingly intensive process even with a team of professionals. Even “tracing” on top of a 3D model, the initial angle/perspective from which you chose to trace over the model might not have panned out the first time, and you’ll have to scrap all the frames associated with that angle. All the fluidity that fully 2D rotoscoping implies merely accentuates these fundamental issues because you’re dealing with at least twice the number of unique frames. And really, as animation goes, 2D fighters are fairly merciless in their demands on your animation talent – since there’s only the one fixed camera angle, it’s a lot harder to fudge wonky proportions or composition with the aid of the camera. Continuity is absolutely key, and a misstep on that front can set even a team of animators back.

And of course I’m sure development on KOF XII wasn’t a continuous process. Four years in the making, they had to be pulling at least a couple key people off to the side to work on other projects during that time, and given that they were essentially re-creating KOF from scratch, they probably had a lot more non-production planning issues that got scrapped and ate up time that way – art direction, character selection, system direction, that kind of stuff.

Yup, I know you said the “KOF” Athena. But KOF style or original, Athena is Athena. Besides, the Kensou from KOF XII was actually the original 1987 Psycho Soldier version. Is he not the same Kensou in the previous KOF installments?

It was rushed because the game was obviously incomplete on a lot of levels upon release, and yeah that is subjective, but come on, 5 stages? To me, something is “rushed” if clearly not enough time was spent on the end product, it isn’t just some solid figure where once you get past this unit of time it can’t be “rushed” anymore. KOF XII failed on so many levels that most players just take for granted, you can’t possibly believe SNK spent enough time with the final release. Are there some good things about KOF XII? Yeah, there are, but you can’t say the game doesn’t have a rushed feel to it.
