Killer Instinct XB1: Season 2 hits October 15th. 20 dollars for Combo, 40 dollars for Ultra

Still better than the other demonstration I saw earlier from KI Central. They didn’t even do combos.

  • Killer Instinct is back, and TJ combo is along for the ride. All throughout the Microsoft booth at E3 this year, stations were set up with arcade sticks as far as the eye can see. What new mechanics awaited us in “season two” of this popular fighting game?

First, and most important, is the brand new “recapture” property that has been added to several moves. Recapture, or restanding as some call it, allows combos to continue after an opponent has been launched. Normally, you can only get a few juggles in before a combo ends if you knock the opponent into the air. But recapturing, taking a page from Skullgirls, allows you to bring the opponent back down to their feet to continue the combo as you will. Thus far it seems as if these moves only work if they hit in the air. Hitting on the ground actually causes the opposite effect, bouncing the opponent into the air. For now, the only character that has a “recapture” move is TJ Combo, the newest character to be revealed. However, it appears as if the whole roster will be getting similar moves, or alterations to their moves in season 2.

TJ combo was the big attraction on the show floor. He was the only new character being showcased. He is a boxer style character, with many of his kicks still throwing punches. He was also a charge character, like Sabrewulf, relying on quick back forth and down up movements, rather than quarter circles.

His moves had an incredible amount of diversity. His back forward charge move produced a variety of effects. One version caused a knee which went through projectiles. Another caused him to duck low and try to throw. If the throw connected he would slam you onto the ground, which caused a ground bounce. Another version was just a rushing straight punch. It did an incredible amount of damage and even had frames of super armor, letting it blow through other moves.

His down up charge was something completely different, and a little hard to get used to. It caused him to jump up and come down with a huge haymaker punch. Different strengths of the move had different properties. Light ones were quick and overhead. The heavy one, on the other hand, impacted the ground with such force that it hit the opponent no matter where they were. If you weren’t jumping you would fall to the ground. It doesn’t do any damage but it immediately lets you get in on anyone who was turtling up.

TJ Combos instinct mode is also rather unique. Under normal circumstances, all it does is provide a speed buff. This is pretty good, allowing him to move around the screen at high speeds and keep the pressure on his opponents, but it’s unimpressive. The real power of his instinct mode comes form, oddly enough, not using it. If he is reduced to zero life with a full instinct bar, he will get up and get a second wind. Here he will recover some life and will be slightly stronger and faster. It’s a great way to make sure your unused instinct doesn’t go to waste.

Other than that,Killer Instinct Season 2 still felt a lot like season 1. There were still combo breakers, ultra combos, and more. The older characters played pretty much identically to how they did in the first season. The stages were pretty much the same except for Combo’s devastated city stage. It all hasn’t changed much.

But the dev team says that this isn’t going to be the case for long. Every character in the game is going to get changed somehow. Move properties are going to be tweaked here and there. Combos are going to become more flexible. Everything is going to evolve in some way. Not to mention we are going to be able to look forward to eight completely new characters to be added to the roster. They wouldn’t comment on exactly who, but they seemed to stumble a bit when I talked about Cinder and Riptor. So all we can do is wait and see what the new Killer Instinct has in store.

J.Wong showing off the true power of TJ Gill. He only has a 1 hit ultra ATM. Only been working on the character for 6 weeks.

I wonder what happens if you hit TJ Combo with an ultra while he has full instinct? Do you get to wail on his ass all day and then he just gets the fuck back up?? LOL

DevilJin with the helpful info. Thanks for finding this.

Interesting that the player doesn’t have to rely on Instinct Mode to progress through a match for Combo (it’s still an effective tool to use, nevertheless). I like the fact that Combo’s B+F forward punch has super armor to it (similar to Balrog’s EX Dash Straight). I wonder if Tremor causes hard or soft knockdown?

I’m just going to assume that once the player activated their Ultra on T.J., I believe that’s a wrap for him completely.

The biggest impacts I can see recapture having are:

1: AA combo’s. If you can get a full juggle off AA situations using recapture, jumping becomes much less viable. This is also a nerf to Sadira and a buff to Glacius more than other characters.

2: late combo lockouts. Right now, to Insting Cancel to punish a late lockout takes really good reactions. The restand makes it easier.

This whole mechanic also buffs Juggle enders, which is cool because they are the weakest enders on the whole.

Also, TJ’s voice actor is perfect. I want more dialog…

Both Keits and Jebailey told me on Twitter that the character is only about 50% done, so there is still lots of work to be done. Hopefully they will fix his intro/outro poses, which look very weird right now.

Yeah I’m hype for AA combos doing real damage. There may be some combo theory that still needs working out, but it just seems like it’s troublesome for most characters other than Spinal or maybe Thunder to rack up big damage off AA’s. Spinal uniquely can steal your instinct for jumping at a bad time also. Fulgore has dev beam, but you have to save your instinct and cancel to get it to land all the hits and make it really damaging.

Yeah they may have to buff Sadira’s footsie game if everyone is going to get this tool. Glacius doing shitty AA damage is the main reason she beats him convincingly. His close range AA’s vs. her are pretty bad also (either no damage or just too slow). This would definitely have Glacius winning the matchup suddenly cuz he finally wouldn’t need a hard knockdown to actually threaten her. Keits said ATM that only some characters may get this restand thing, but if the fans ask for it they may give it to everyone in the end.

I’m kinda bummed that restand is going to be a universal mechanic. I was hoping it would be unique to Combo.

Spinals running nut kick should restand.

TJ Combo’s move list

Looks like he’ll have a variety of air commands despite being an MMA fighter. Should make him pretty interesting vs Sadira if that’s the case. Looks like he has air chains and some other air move. I guess his b,f+LP move is that spin fist move that he kept doing over and over in some vids. Looked like he could do it more than 2 times in a combo.

He has like 6 follow ups after his powerline/tackle. Jeebus.

Keits said on twitter that for right now they are only planning on certain characters having it, but depending on fan feedback may add it to the whole cast later. He said regardless everyone will play a bit differently when Season 2 hits.

I guess it makes sense to stand back on your feet after getting nut kicked.

Not sure how I feel about the whole “everyone will play differently” in Season 2. I don’t really want to have to relearn everyone. I hope by that they just mean it will be buffs like in the SF4 updates and nothing game changing. Please don’t F this up IG…

yeah, I dont like the sound of that. some changes ehere and there are ok, but not if you change a character playstyle, unless it was ass.

Yo TJ looks like he has a nice tight move set, but damn that dash punch does like 20% right now, crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKJjAxzkH_I&feature=youtu.be&a

I think it’ll be okay. I trust Iron Galaxy infinite more times than Capcom. Even with Combofiend assist.

Lol at 20 percent damage special. No non shadow move does that damage. Sounds cheap.

And it has 1 hit armor( i think) Land that 5 times and you win, why bother with combos.

what stream is having the TJ combo reveal today?

Looks pretty cool!

So when is the official Cinder announcement?

Stay tuned

Are the season 2 characters come as package or will they be released individually on a quarterly schdule like Spinal and Fulgore?
