Ken Q&A: Ask simple questions here?

Dash out > Ultra

If you FADC, you won’t get the full ultra, just the shinryuken which does stupidly low damage, not to mention you’re throwing away two bars of meter.

ALWAYS go for the full ultra when you land a FA.

you say that but I see lots of pros do SRK FADC Ultra. why?

After crumpling their opponent? :xeye:

yup.

then either I’m retarded, or they’re just doing something wrong. :wtf:

Just for the record, landing a full ultra after a level 3 FA does 530 damage. SRK > FADC > Ultra does 400.

Maybe these players you’re talking about were just screwing around? lol I dunno

yeah they were playing casual oops sorry!

thanks man i think ill stick witch cr.fp into tatsu and cl.rh into ex srk as my punishes then. I guess super isnt as good as i thought it was. I always saved it cause as a punish if i had full meter i would do cl.rh into f.shoryu cancel the second hit into jab shoryureppa and ultra right after no matter where they’re at in the screen you dont even have to be in the corner. It does about 622 which is pretty good i think if you wanna save your super.

You’re a better man than I, if you can hit super to Ultra consistently.

The only time I ever use my Super is when I accidentally save up meter and am trying to do a hit confirm shoryu combo. I just think, after damage scaling, the damage it does isn’t worth all the EX you could have done… Unless, of course, it would win you the match.

me and my ken tutor whos the top 3rd strike ken player in the northwest and owns me pretty bad figured out that super into ultra midscreen thing not too long ago. I say at least go to training room and practice the combo i listed above to at least have in your arsenal. ill tell you that it saved my ass more than a couple times since it takes so much damage.

I was right next to them. It also whiff’s in training when I’m next to them, I just want to know why.

you might be doing it too slowly? it’s hard to say for sure why it’s whiffing unless we can see it.

I don’t know if this is right but it might be because you are messing up the timing for the link from the cr. jab to the cr. fierce. Though honestly I wouldn’t worry to much about it unless if you want to get the EX Tatsu. Check out JoeMasters’ thread on General Discussion (Combos, Techniques, Strats, etc) and on the first post it talks about which characters if whiffs on and which characters it doesn’t.

interesting…I’ll have to try it…right now, I just love getting in with a lp or lk, cuz if I can link that into a standing lp, I’m TATSUING U!!!

I’ll have to try ur move out though–sounds good…

man, come over to PSN, we need more Ken players representing…

ok so… my question: who should i pick to focus on learning as my second character?

i’m looking to have a answer for some of kens worst match-ups, and something to spice up my play. i am between these options: chun-li, boxer, dictator, gouki, seth? ryu?

idk i’m kind of at a loss, i don’t want a character that ONLY turtles, but has a good balance of defense and offense/combos.

Ive noticed dudes like dragon boy have switch to ryu or akuma i dunno if that speaks well of ken as a viable character…

well I think it’s mainly because of Ken’s weak ultra…when it lands, it’s not like “AWWW MANNN” like getting hit with Sagat or Ryu, Abel Ultra etc…It’s like “that wasn’t that bad” An EX tatsu into Ultra, AA–Ultra, and FA crumple then Ultra are the only ways to get his Full animation to come out–and there not as reliable as SRK-FADC-Ultra, because of Ken’s start-up.

As a character, I just feel Ken needs one buff, and I can’t really pin-point it down yet. Either A) He needs a better tool to defend against zoners or B) He needs another tool that makes Ken more dangerous up close.

I’d go for option B since Ken seems to be all about being aggressive. Crazy kicks would be a great poke, and something to fear when Ken is up close. c.mk FB is good, but can be easily countering by characters with a quick focus attack. Target combo is still very useless sadly, so IMO playing a gd Sagat or Gief is just never in your favor of winning the match. Ken needs a close move, that gets him in easily, offers another poke besides step kick/c.mk, and should beat out a fairly good number of moves. Or just give him an alpha roll or something? lol

In tourney play, I would imagine you see a WHOLE LOT of Giefs, Sagats, Ryu’s Balrogs and Bisons, and Vipers. Well 2 of those character absolutely crush Ken on paper, so that’s maybe why Ken isn’t being used as much in high-level matches.

He has kara–but his Ultra doesn’t back him up with the damage that he needs to close a match. I’m having the same trouble here, I keep losing to this Gat player called Emblem Lord on PSN, Even when I outplay him, one misstep, and I eat a TU–the match is clearly over, as it’s easy as pie to HK afterwards, then link right into Ultra. Not to mention, I have to get in. I’m relying on Tatsu mix-ups mostly to beat my opponents, against Sagat, that just does not work.

btw–after you hit an EX tatsu on Sagat, will his TU beat everything that you do? You land right before him, I can’t get a throw off before he reversals with TU? EDIT: I believe the answer here is NO based on some games last night-lol.

I’m really running out of options for this guy. OUr match is always over in like 10 seconds because of Sagats’s damage. I’ve somewhat conquered his zoning strategy. I FADC Tiger shots from full screen, then block, or straight jump till I’m in. Once I’m there, I still feel like I’m beat. His FA moves him forward, so it’s very dangerous. sometimes his Tiger Knee gives him the advantage even when I block, he still has a crazy fast poke with c.low, tiger shot, and great fast HK sweep, and if he blocks your c.mk FB combo, and your close, he gets a free s.HK that hits TWICE! Who said all you have to do is get in on Sagat?

That might be true for ok/medium skill players, but for a Sagat that knows how to use his ENTIRE arsenal well, I really have no hope to winning this match up. It’s IMO even worse that gief. Gief you just have to execute like perfect to win the match (even though they can messup like 10 times because of Gief’s vitality) with Sagat you can make NO bad choices, and even when you know he’s gonna try and TU, you still have to sit there and block because NOTHING you have beats it out. Like seriously, does EX srk beat out Sagat’s TU? Sagat is OP…the more I play gd ones, the more I draw that conclusion. Still, I’ m gonna own em!

lol…I just owned a Turtle player who mained Sagat…he played chun for most of the matches then thought it would be easy pickings with Sagat…ha! owned him with lp lk hit confirming!

Man, it’s sooo satisfying winning with Ken. Even though he’s aggressive playing patiently with lp lk c.mk FB really is the best way to go about defensive players. Kara throw (or the absence of Kara throw) works on them too…

As satisfying as that was, I still wanna own Emblem though…Everyone one else is meh…

What to do at the end of Tatsu or waking up close range?

Hi ppl!

Ken user here, and i’ve mostly mastered my cross-up game and zoning…

Two things i find myself doing by habit:

  1. On wake-up: I automatically block even when the opp is next to me, and they throw me… and it keeps happening… What do i do?

  2. I’ll do a ground Tatsu (non-EX) and end up close-range block or no block and not know what to do, opp will have the first attack (seems the recovery is really long with tatsu…) What do i do?

The other few things i’m going to practice hard are basic close range combos (standing n crouching opp.) and also the Focus Cancel, which i only just read how to do… i was always letting go of the FA without dashing forward and making it useless thus opening myself up to be attacked.

Any help/ideas on focus cancelling an opp. fireball? Does it use your ex gauge at all?
Is this useful?

Cheers ppl,
kenz_

  1. Try to dash back on wake-up, or maybe FADC back?

  2. I’m still working on this part as well for your second question.

you can use the focus cancel to walk through fireballs, but beware of EX fireballs or Akumas fireballs that ren’t purple, those count for two hits and will break your focus cancel.

focus cancels cause chip damage, so beware of using it too much, unless you think you can recover the vitality or you think it’s worth losing the vitality
