Ken Q&A: Ask simple questions here?

Against headstomp spammers, neutral jump hk smacks them out of the air if they commit to it.

And yea, I use the ring finger for mk for my kara-throw as well.

Absorbing it doesn’t affect his change of game play… I tried absorbing and dashing up to meet him and srk, but I completely whiff because I haven’t made it to the end of the screen in time. At which point do I ideally want the kick to come out relative to him coming at me? it seems whenever I jump after he’s reached the peak of the jump, it’ll beat out whatever i wanted to do.

just walk back and punish with cr.mk tatsu. they’ll stop it fast. also if they try and get cute with the followup after headstomp, dont go for a dp. time a cr.mk right when he comes back at you and buffer in a tatsu. if he runs away you just get the mk and are totally safe.

this is the reason bison is next to useless against the shotos.

^ nice to know

i should walk back, even if it’s a full screen thing? he’ll usually do it for a first move, but afterwards he’ll wait til I hadoken, would I still have time to walk back?

if they are trying to react to a fireball from full screen you will allways have time to n.jump rh and pop him in the face, they get the message pretty fast to not do that dumb shit on you, and as for the followup, any move that lowers your hitbox owns that shit for free, personally i like to punish it with spiral arrow from my cammy, if he actually goes for it he takes damage, if he tried to sneak behind me then i glide to safety, but ken obviously has an easier out with cr.mk

basically whenever you see bison go up off the ground make sure you hold directly back. you can only walk backwards against a headstomp untill he reaches the peak and comes down at you so you need to be holding back before then. after the peak you will go into a block animation while holding back. You’ll get the feeling for it, just remember to punish him when he land right infront of you, and dont get thrown haha

I didn’t get what you meant exactly, highlulu. Are you saying he can’t hit me if I do cr mk upon him landing right in front of me? or Are you saying punishing with attacks that lower your hitbox is sure to hit if I stick it out pseudo-meaty-like?

what we’re talking about is the followup punch he can do after you block a headstomp. if you time a cr.mk right you will duck under his attack and hit him as he’s landing. you can then cancel that attack into a tatsu.

i threw this out there a while ago but if anyone is having trouble picturing or understanding some of the senario’s brought up here i’d be more than happy to spend some time on psn recreating situations and explaining them over the mic. anyone who needs can just message me on psn and hopefully i can catch you on.

Honestly never knew that…played some bison a bit ago and it was amazing. Well, that matchup is a bit easier now.

This sounds great. Gonna go to practice mode now to get that cr.mk timing down for this scenario. Very useful stuff, thanks.

Ken’s Kara throw on pad

I have a lot of trouble doing ken’s kara throw on the control pad for the 360. I was wondering if their was any setup of changing the buttons that makes it easier to do on the pad. I don’t have trouble with Kara timing btw, I main vega and am very good at his kara throw; It’s just very very difficult to press B than immediately X and A with one hand for me.

you can kara throw exactly the same with ken as you can with vega. just use HK instead of MK. its probably the most consistant way for anyone on a pad, and the range difference is negligible

Alright guys so I have a question with Ken’s Focus Attack, would you use it when someone is jumping at you? Because we all know his Focus Attack is slower than most Focus Attacks, I started doing that recently and it works mostly on inexperienced players and sometimes on more experienced players. After that I basically follow up with HK into HK Tatsu which does 350 itself and you get a good dmg combo, I see Ken players doing HK into Shoryuken instead, why?

And what’s the big risk of Focus Attacking when someone is jumping?

Edit : Double post

Thank you so much; that opens up a whole new world to me literally. I had no idea you could use HK as well. Ty again

Focusing a jump in becomes a much worse AA as your oppenents get better. Personally i can read a FA and throw out a DP after my jump attack gets absorbed. some chr’s FA’s will come out fast enough to catch people before their feet touch the ground.
not the case with ken. its best to avoid using FA at all as an Anti air. especially considering ken’s backdash isnt even fast enough to bait a dp with.

you know how most shotos do cr mk xx hadoken, and that opponents can squeeze an FA in between to beat that? Is it technically possible to Ultra instead of FAing? If it works that sounds like it’ll produce gdlk outcomes as a mixup.

yes its possible to to use ultra between c.mk hadoken depends on the spacing ryu’s fireballs come out fast so he would have to hit you with his toes akuma’s and certainly ken’s fb come out slower so unles the mk fb is done very close you should be able to ultra between it its not something to rely on though

if your referring to kens Ultra i would assume its definitly not possible/plausible. at the range you would need for the ultra to land, even ken’s FB should combo after the cr.mk.

chun on the other hand…
