Ken General Thread: Go with the Flow

Lp dp to ex dp is V Trigger only

But L.Tatsu can be combo’d from without V-Trigger right? Akuma style?

Correct into fierce dp.

I’ll be looking for as many opportunities to go into that as possible then. Is his light tatsu a standing only or will it hit crouchers? I can’t remember at all. His b.mp looks like it’s a force stander.

Hits crouchers

well, it’s not like these impressions are only coming from us watching videos, it’s from people playing the game at events as well. I’m not into the overly negative posts, it does get annoying, but I’m just calling what I see. Game looks very unfinished, pretty slow, and kinda boring, and Ken’s debut he looked much more interesting than before. On paper, his V-skill seems rather weak compared to the cast. That’s pretty much all we have to go on right? Yes, the meta game isn’t established. People don’t even know the best way to move across the screen yet, I get that, but still, it’s good to talk about things, I actually think that’s what Capcom wants, and are monitoring reactions.

So basically nobody knows shit about his V Trigger.

Ok confirmed I’ll be playing him day one.

Yes, you are right, it’s good to talk about things. And I am not disagreeing that v-skill in its current form is not as useful as it was initially, or as good an option as some other characters v-skills.

Still, I am not overly worried for two reasons:

A. The game is still in beta and thus I am pretty confident that a lot of the less logical changes won’t stick. For example, most of the unneeded nerfs Nash got were recently reversed. Having useless buttons if something Capcom is actively trying to avoid, so they have no reason to make Ken’s v-skill bad. They either aren’t done tweaking it, or there is something about it we haven’t figured out yet.

B. Even in the worst case scenario, a limited v-skill won’t make the character bad. He already has a pool of excellent tools to choose from and his neutral (which is the meat of this game) is very good, offering both good buttons and high damage conversion. Besides Ken had always had useless moves, his step kick was crap in 3rd strike and his TC was a joke in SF4 but he was good in both versions.

As for the game itself, don’t let early videos fool you. SF4 looked a lot worse during the first two years of its life. You also have to take into consideration that a lot of the initial complaints about the game mechanics are coming from people that started playing SF with IV. SFV plays like a mix of 3rd strike and alpha 2 so those people will either have to adjust or find another game to play. I personally had a blast when I tried it. Hands on it feels neither slow not incomplete, it actually feels more like an SF game than SF4 ever had for me.

His v-trigger is one of the best in the game. Some of the things we know about it:

It adds more damage and juggle points to his specials and it changes their properties (active and recovery frames most likely). Lk srk had crazy fast recovery, ex srk turns into shoryu-reppa. You can juggle ex srk after landing an lk srk for good damage and corner carry. His air ex tatsu (dive kick) does two hits and it no longer launches the opponent, allowing for lengthier combos, his regular air tatsu crosses up like crazy and his ex fireball knocks down. Also IIRC, during a recent WSO they said that, activation with srk cancelling seems to now be safe on block.

In general, v-trigger combos do similar damage to a CA and if you also add Ken’s CA in there you can take more than 50% of your opponent’s health away. Ken’s v-trigger seems like one of the strongest come back tools in the game, you only need a hit confirm and you are good to go.

How come nobody is hype about the EX Air Tatsu set-ups, it gives you a free reset opportunity by the looks of it. I’m gonna be finding some dirty set-ups.

Ken has a dive kick and a dash now and people are complaining lol. Dude has a completely new tool kit that we haven’t even touched. His v-trigger is a swag button basically, big big bump in damage its really not supposed to be some neutral tool.

I think he is going to be a blast to play, too early to make judgements on any tier list period. Game will come out and be an unbalanced POS like every new fighting game but finding the broken stuff early on is just too much fun.

Only the FGC would complain about a character most of them haven’t played, that’s in a game that ain’t even been released yet.

On topic I can’t wait 2 play the new beta with Ken it’s gonna be awesome

Wow I thought ken was going to suck before, but now he definitely will if the new changes stick…

Probably go put your head in some sand until the game comes out.

What do you mean?

So only circle jerking to all of capcoms dumb decisions until the game comes out? No thanks.

I don’t know how to post twitter but the guy from winner stays on tweeted that essentially ken now has no bnbs because they gimped sone of his tools

So what happened that made some people cry bloody murder? What Ken nerfs?

Ok ummmmmmm go to last page of ryu thread some one put the tweet there

So he’s lost light attack conversions by the tweet I saw, but I don’t get how that makes him suck at all. If he can still convert from strong I’m happy.

@otori said he should still be able to do c.LK, s.LP to whatever.
