Ken Combo Thread

I saw some Bannana Ken action
He’s actually using Ryu more than Ken in his matches — kinda like WeirdoNeo is using Hwaorang more than Juri :confused:
but saw him do some nice corner pressure.
Cr. Mp, Cr. Mp, Cr. Mk xx Hadouken followed up with Cr. Hk
side note – His opponent blocked everything except for the Cr. Hk because he stood in order to block the Hadouken

f.mk is a good tool in this game because there isn’t focus attack system. In SF4 you can’t abuse this tool because of that.

f:mk: (stepkick) is great, if only because it turns so many previously unpunishable moves into free damage. I’ve been thinking of using Ken/Julia as a second team to basically punish EVERYTHING that’s more than -1 on block. If it’s close, Ken’s Super. Mid-range? Stepkick or Julia’s super (I think she gets a bit more range than Ken). Also, if you know you can punish something with stepkick, you can link into Super, although it is a 1 frame link.

Also been thinking about keeping a counter hit charged, get that extra 2 frames so I can link into larger combos.

What are your methods for going into a Cross Rush?
I generally like to link into the chain that way I can get options off the links or also hit confirm into chains easier.

Here are the main two I have with Ken
I use these for when I’m not wanting to use meter for switch cancels

Cr. Lp, Cr. Lp, St. Lp ~St. Mp ~St. Hk (Hk)
For far away situations (nice for poking): Cr.Mk ~ St. Hk (Hk)
Up close: Cr.Mk ~ Cr.Hp (Hp)
Hk Air Tatus cross up into TC (Hp) – This one is a little wonky, sometimes it seems to combo sometimes it doesn’t.

Stop using lights. Ken’s normals all suck terribly, because aside from s.lp they’re all negative or neutral on block. Start doing his target combo (mp, hp) which is only -1 on block and you dash cancel tatsu to keep pressure, just don’t ever cancel it to hadouken on block.

but cr lk is 3f aka like the only 3f low short in the game

Target combo isn’t -1, it is a mistake in the guide. It is atleast -5

cl st lp, st lp, st mp, and cl mk are all great for starting ken’s frame traps. if you insist on using cr lk just link it into a standing normal so you get advantage. there is no reason to ignore cr lk just because it’s negative on block. it’s like one of the only 3 framers in this game which is huge for ken.

EDIT: another thing i feel that we ken players should use more often is tatsu charge to store counter hit for our next attack. i do it once in awhile and use st roundhouse to get that crumple for 300 meterless. it’s just another tool to add towards ken existing arsenal.

thanks for the advice back then. I personally feel my ken still needs work but your advice has helped. I’m able to empty jump and go into a launcher combo at times and it’s pretty nice.

I’m trying to figure out what the best blockstring option is to utilize charge canceling for pressure, so far I’ve been trying target combo > charge cancel > cr.lk > string, but I’m wondering if it might be easier to just repeat cr.lk > cr.lp > s.lp > cr.mk > charge cancel and toss in a b+mk here and there. Any advice?

if you get the crumple from a st. roundhouse from maximum range, what is the best follow up?

I’m pretty sure that cr. MK xx CADC leaves you at a big frame disadvantage, so no.

What are people doing for Ken off of a Launcher?

Cr. Fierce to Fierce DP for me.

Easy juggle and nice damage
If you have problems doing Dps – Like I did at first cuz I never use Shotos or characters with Dps – just hold down forward during the mp and mk to give you a little buffer room.

F Hk>st. hp>hp srk tc into your second character for an easy one meter over 50% combo…
By yourself you are almost doing 40% damage meterless…

Oh btw i was wonder if cs.lp or cr.jab into rapid chain cs.mk was a safe frame trap or not? I’m assuming not but then again i dunno yet, have yet to try ken out against himself to punish it with his 3 frame srk.

Also i’m thinking of focusing more on Ken as i still think i not at full potential with him. I wanna see if i could use more of his meter and lead lili using launcher combos that don’t always have to require a tc.
I’m starting to think of ending chain combos with ex hadoken because its +5 on hit and i rarely use that move. It’s always tc into lili and putting everything on her shoulders. I think ken can get some nasty stuff off of ex hado.

Rapid chains don’t work as frame traps because if you cancel your jab into MK the opponent never leaves blockstun, so he can’t mash buttons into the trap.
st. lp or st. mp are good because they have a few frames of advantage on block after they’ve completely finished. you could get a nice frame trap if you try to “link” a cr. MK, or any other move that you feel that is more convenient after any of this two punches.

Yeah i guess i’ll figure out what to do with ken. I mean i feel that i’m under utilizing his ex hadoken which is +5 on hit. Gonna have to spend some time perfecting my execution so Lili isn’t the one having to carry the team.
