Hey SRK! I hope a few of you can chime in with your thoughts on if I should keep my PS2 collection around. Here are the specifics:
I only have a launch BC PS3 to play my PS2 games on and it may be on it’s way out cause it’s very loud after it’s been on for 10 minutes.
Limited amount of games.
Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry 3
Raiden 3
Mega Man X Collection
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Street Fighter Ann. Collection
Gradius V
Metal Slug Anthology
Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1
Viewtiful Joe
Resident Evil 4
All but 4 of those games, I prefer to only play with an arcade stick. My arcade sticks use the PS360+ PCB and no longer work with my PS2 games.
Solutions:
I could buy a PS2. This would be the most expensive route but my arcade sticks would be supported. Not worth it for a handful of games though…
I could mod my stick with a Toodles Cthulu PCB as I’ve heard they still work but again, I’m not sure I want to do that for a handful of games that are no longer supported
I could sell my PS2 games but I will get next to nothing for them. Hell, SF: Anthology is on amazon for $16 new right now which is less than I payed for it new back in the day.
I could be patient and wait to see if Sony releases a firmware that corrects arcade stick compatibility for PS2 games. Street Fighter Alpha Anthology is the one I really care about as it was not released on any other consoles. I do have SFA 3 on Dreamcast though… I could always buy the gamecube version of MegamanX collection as the PS360+ will work on Wii/GC with a converter.
Well, I still have a PS2 launch edition with CVS2, GT3, Midway Arcade treasures (with MK2), Super Turbo (PS1 edition), MK7 (Armageddon), and 1 or 2 more other games. They are collecting dust because I haven’t played them in 4 years. I just fired up my PS2 last week and it still works the same as when I unboxed it back in the day…
You bring up a great point. Am I still going to play any of these games on a regular basis? I guess, I just want to be able to access any of my games (with an arcade stick) when I feel like playing them. Honestly, I haven’t played any of my PS2 games recently. It seems like once it was discovered that arcade sticks lost PS2 compatibility on PS3’s, that’s when I really wanted to play my PS2 games. LOL!
Also just noticed PS2’s being sold on craigs list for as cheap as $25. You can get a component cable for $3 on amazon. So, that may be the cheapest and smarted route to take in this situation. I really don’t want another box under the TV though. Never thought I would consider buying a PS2 again…
It’s not about getting into other games. Trust me, I have tons of other games to play. I just want to be able to keep what few PS2 games I have left playable on a stick. So, I’m forced to look at other options. I must confess, I do love me some old school Capcom…
I know, I used to have MVC2 on PS2 but sold it once I got the Dreamcast version which is better. Wish I would have kept it though…
I’ve got Onimusha 3, Okami HD and Mega Man X Collection. Never tried Godhand or Chaos Legion. I know Capcom ain’t perfect but they have some great titles and franchises. It’s just cool to hate on them these days…
buying a PS2 is expensive? last i knew, a brand new PS2 (slim) packaged in was like 99.99 USD. Used PS2’s are pretty much dirt cheap now, and most seem to work. Just get a used PS2 and make a separate stick because PSX pads are easy to hack.
also, your PS3 that does BC is bound to die out pretty soon anyways, so you’re gonna want to look into getting a new Triple once that time comes.
I’ve got a slim model PS3 along with my launch Fat PS3 so I think I’m good on the triple. lol. But I think that is good advise on the PS2. I will just start looking for a PS2 on the cheap…
I doubt I’d ever get rid of my PS2 and/or games. Too much sentimental attachment and good memories. I still play mine on occasion but even when I don’t I think I’ll wanna look at it on my shelf.
