What I find so surprising about these DC animated movies is that, despite the talent involved, they’re fucking terrible.
Public Enemies had the voice cast and the premise to be stellar, and it ended up drawing inspiration from Advent Children: focus on making the fight scenes cool, and fill the rest of the film with cheeseball lines and wacky out-of-left-field, plot hole laden storytelling. Superman: Doomsday was similar.
The rest had moments of good and bad, but ALL are crippled by a puzzling limitation: short running times. This is most apparent in New Frontier and First Flight: things are looking up until suddenly, the villain is made generic and inexplicably evil to force the final conflict and rush the plot along. Wonder Woman left me feeling like if I hadn’t known who Wonder Woman was at the start of the film, I wouldn’t know who she is at the end; it felt empty. Gotham Knight was a mix of eye candy and occasionally insightful narrative.
Compare to the Marvel animated films, which started and stumbled through their mediocre-at-best phase (except for Invincible Iron Man, which was horrendous) to arrive at Next Avengers, which felt solid and complete, and Hulk VS., which does the Advent Children formula RIGHT with real wit and even some minor, but not unfitting characterization.
The Marvel animated movie makers are actually showing signs that they’re listening to criticism and improving, gradually but surely. On DC’s end, there’s either a severe budgeting problem or laziness stemming from the wild success that was Justice League Unlimited. Haven’t figured out which yet.
Dr. B’s line of animated movies had to be canceled. They were so mad sexy they impregnated all peoples of all genders. Disgusting.
I used to think the DCAU team could do no wrong, until they started exclusively doing direct-to-video movies. Doomsday? Public Enemies? Anything having to do with DC’s stupid obsession with monkeying around in different continuities? I don’t know if these guys are losing their touch or if it’s purely down to the bad choices of source material.
Which isn’t a good thing when its a Jeph Loeb comic. Rent/Download it, watch the fight scenes, then let it collect dust.
That doesn’t make it a good movie. “It was in the comic” isn’t an excuse.

The GL, Wonder Woman, and Doomsday films were jolly good fun, for me. That’s all that matters.
